    Finding
Official BuShips publication documents this hull twice: (1) the Lend-Lease transfer roster under 'TRANSFERRED TO UNITED KINGDOM' lists 'LST303 ... Landing Ship, Tank ... 21 Nov 1942' - the Navy's own record of the transfer date; (2) the LST design table covers hull block LST1-490 with 2 x G.M. Diesel 12-567A engines, 1,700 shaft horsepower, single Falk main reduction gears, 3 diesel-drive 100 kW 230 V DC generators, 4,320 bbls diesel fuel capacity, accommodations 13 officers / 106 enlisted Navy (footnotes: plus 16 Army officers / 131 Army enlisted), 2 twin + 4 single 40-mm AA mounts, and NO boiler entries for the LST1-490 design group (the turbine-driven LST1153-1155 are the only LSTs with boiler columns populated).

    Limitations
Primary Navy publication - the authoritative machinery and transfer reference. The roster entry documents the transfer date only (no builder attribution on this line - builder from DANFS); the design table is class-level data covering this hull's design group, not a hull-specific outfit list. Contains no asbestos content. The class-profile citation URL (shipscribe.com/styles/usnaux/sdb/SDB1945v2.pdf) 404s this session; the live mirror at shipscribe.com/pubs/SDB1945v2.pdf is cited instead.

Campaigns: Sicily occupation; Salerno landings; West Coast of Italy operations-1944 including Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings; invasion of Normandy June 1944 (attributed to MacDermott, 'Ships Without Names'); shuttle service between Tilbury, Ostend, and Antwerp; repairs in the Thames and at Antwerp; allocated to 12th Flotilla for the Pacific; invasion of Malaya; Australia and Japan. 'Paid off and returned to US Navy custody at Subic Bay, Philippines, 4 May 1946'; struck 3 July 1946; sold 5 December 1947 to Bosey, Philippines. Photo captions: HM LST-302, HM LST-303, and USS LST-349 at Nisida, Italy, loading/unloading equipment (Robert Hurst/Brian Keniry); HM LST-303 moored at Morotai 27 October 1945 with Australian troops arriving from Balikpapan and lining the rail prior to disembarkation - units scheduled for Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (HQ 34 Brigade, 28th Field Company, 121 Transport Platoon, 20th Field Ambulance, 65th Battalion; credited Australian War Memorial; NavSource caption reads 'Morotai, Borneo' - Morotai is in the NEI Halmahera group and Borneo is the troops' origin point, so the record carries 'Morotai' only). Specifications block: 1,625 t light / 4,080 t full / 2,366 t beaching; 328 ft oa; 50 ft beam; 11.6 kt trial; endurance 24,000 mi @ 9 kt; 13 officers + 104 enlisted; troop accommodations 16 officers + 147 enlisted; 2 LCVP; UK outfit: one 12-pdr AA multi-barrel, six 20-mm, four FAM mounts; 2 x GM 12-567A 900 hp diesels, Falk gears, 1,700 shp.

RN crew incl. RNR officers (1942-46); embarked forces at Normandy/Italy/Malaya; Australian BCOF troops (Oct 1945)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track DANFS/BuShips where those exist, but the RN-history block rests on secondary literature (MacDermott 'Ships Without Names' cited for Normandy). Two documented inconsistencies flagged in gaps: RN commissioning 14 Nov 1942 precedes USN commissioning 20 Nov 1942; the '27 November 1943' New York departure conflicts with the page's own campaign list (Sicily Jul-Aug 1943, Salerno Sep 1943) and with ADM-sourced convoy records placing her off Malta 14 Aug 1943. Finding
uboat.net documents: USN entry - ordered 20 May 1942, commissioned 20 November 1942, 'Decommissioned on 21 November 1942 for transfer to the Royal Navy. Returned to the USN on 4 May 1946. Sold on 5 December 1947.' RN entry - commissioned 14 November 1942, end service 4 May 1946; command table: Lt.Cdr. George Frederick Parker RD RNR (3 Aug 1943 - 7 Mar 1944), T/A/Lt.Cdr. Frederick Lawson Baker RNR (7 Mar 1944 - Aug 1944), T/A/Lt.Cdr. Eustace Reginald Davies RNR (Aug 1944 - 4 Jun 1945), A/Lt.Cdr. Leonard Arthur White DSC RNR (4 Jun 1945 - early 1946). Convoy record: LST 303 joined combined convoy OG 91/KMS 22 from Bizerta ~1330B/13 Aug 1943 and was detached to Malta ~1800B/14 Aug 1943 with LST 323 and LST 366; sources cited 'ADM 199/585 + ADM 199/975 + ADM 199/2101' (UK National Archives). CORRECTION: this primary-file-sourced convoy placement (Mediterranean, mid-August 1943) is incompatible with NavSource's 'sailed from New York, 27 November 1943' - the 1943 sailing year is a probable transcription error; sister HM LST-302 sailed for the Mediterranean 27 January 1943 (returned) and 23 February 1943 per her NavSource page.

uboat.net is a specialist secondary compilation; its convoy event cites UK National Archives ADM 199 convoy files (not independently verified this session - the underlying files are at Kew). The correction resolves nothing by itself - the actual Atlantic-crossing date of LST-303 remains undocumented here; it only establishes that 27 November 1943 cannot be correct. No asbestos content.

    Finding
A diesel-powered LST-1-class hull built mid-1942 at a U.S. Navy yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era and that yard's documented asbestos-use environment. Era-standard applications aboard a diesel landing ship of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, accommodation insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers and no steam distribution - the boiler/steam-pipe lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; exposure relevance concentrates in the machinery spaces, auxiliary systems, and interior finishes.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-303. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Her operational career was under the Royal Navy, so service-era maintenance materials would follow UK supply and refit practice, not BuShips practice - a further reason not to project USN material specifics onto her in-service period.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's 1942 construction era. Standing Navy policy removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. LST-303 spent 1942-46 under the Royal Navy and was stricken/sold 1946-47, so the Navy's in-service asbestos management program described by GAO applies to her only at the construction end (Boston Navy Yard). Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS/HM LST-303 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener swept by exact name AND hull number across both indexes: '"LST-303"' opinions returned 2 hits, both name collisions with no vessel connection (Dobbs v. State, 318 So. 2d 527, Fla. App. 1975; Lessee of Haines v. Witmer, 2 Yeates 400, Pa. 1798); '"LST 303"' opinions returned the same 2 cases; '"USS LST-303"' opinions returned 0; '"LST-303"' docket index (RECAP) returned 0. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm listicle coverage of this hull. As an RN-operated lend-lease hull, any service-era exposure claims would likely appear in UK records rather than US dockets.

Witmer) are classified name collision, not litigation touching the hull. RN ship's logs (UK TNA ADM 53), convoy files (ADM 199), Boston Navy Yard construction records (NARA RG 181), and USN deck logs for her two USN-custody periods (RG 24) are undigitized leads.
