- Finding
- Era/design inference for this diesel-powered LST-1-class hull: no boilers - asbestos-relevant applications for the type are GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, winch/davit brake linings, valve packing and flange gaskets. The builder, Norfolk Navy Yard (Portsmouth, VA), has a documented era asbestos product list in the Atlas shipyard dataset (Thermobestos; Marinite; Transite; Navy Spec materials; Kaylo; Unibestos; FOAMGLAS; Ric-Wil; pipe insulation and lagging; boiler and turbine insulation; electrical cable insulation; deck coverings and flooring; bulkhead fire barriers; gaskets and packing).

- Limitations
- Class/era and yard-level inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-337. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; establishes no quantity, no exposure, and no individual causation. Yard product list documents materials used at the yard, not materials installed in this hull.

- NavSource archive detail for this hull: commissioned 16 December 1942 with LT. Louis Brower, USN, in command (Brower to May 1944; LT. Walter L. Worrall, USNR, May 1944 - 2 December 1944). Europe-Africa-Middle East campaign dates: Sicilian occupation 9-15 July 1943; Salerno landings 9-21 September 1943; Invasion of Normandy 6-25 June 1944. A temporary flight deck for four L-4 Grasshopper Army observation aircraft was fitted at Bizerte, Tunisia, before Salerno. On Salerno D-Day (9 September 1943) she off-loaded troops and equipment of the 151st Field Artillery, 34th Infantry Division, over a causeway, took two near misses from German artillery that wounded Brig. Gen. Thomas E. Lewis and S1/c R. L. Brooks (both recommended for Purple Hearts), and sustained minor upper-hull damage; between 9 and 15 September she made a Sicily round trip carrying RAF units. Decommissioned and transferred to the United Kingdom 2 December 1944; commissioned into the Royal Navy as HM LST-337 the same day at Rosneath, Scotland; assigned to the Pacific Theater and participated in the Invasion of Malaya; paid off and returned to US Navy custody at Subic Bay 16 March 1946. Sold to Bosey, Philippines, 5 December 1947; documented in merchant service as the Chinese-flag MV Wan Shen carrying UNRRA trucks, medical supplies, and food up the Yangtze from Shanghai to Changsha, Hunan, 30 December 1948 (UN Archives photos S-0801-0011-0001-00005/-00006). Specifications: 1,625 t light / 4,080 t full; 328 ft oa; 50-ft beam; 11.6 kt trial; 2x GM 12-567A 900-hp diesels, Falk reduction gear, twin screws 1,700 shp; 13 officers/104 enlisted plus 16 officers/147 enlisted troop accommodations; two LCVPs.

- Finding
- Norfolk Naval Shipyard official history (DVIDS): of 20 LSTs built at Norfolk Navy Yard (LST 333 through LST 352), ten - including LST-337 - participated in the D-Day landings at Normandy. NNY laid the keel for the first of its 20 LSTs on 17 July 1942; twelve were constructed and launched in Dry Dock 8. Yard photographs show the LST 337-342 group launching at Dry Dock 8 and LST 337 with 338 on 8 November 1942. The wartime yard workforce exceeded 43,000.

Its photo caption dates the LST 337-342 Dry Dock 8 event 'Nov. 7, 1942' while DANFS gives launch as 8 November 1942 (likely drydock flooding/ceremony vs official launch date - see gaps). [7]HyperWar (ibiblio), 'Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945: USS LST-337' page vs NHHC DANFS and NavSource [other_primary]
- Locator
- HyperWar LST-337 spec block; DANFS LST-337 entry; NavSource 160337.htm
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION: the HyperWar 'Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945' compilation page for LST-337 states 'commissioned 20 December 1942' and 'Complement: 7 officers, 204 enlisted' with an early-fit armament line - all conflicting with the primary record. DANFS gives commissioning as 16 December 1942; the NavSource specifications block (consistent with BuShips SDB-1945 v2 design figures) gives 13 officers/104 enlisted ship's company plus 16 officers/147 enlisted troop accommodations. DANFS/NavSource figures are adopted. Separately, DANFS phrases the return as 'returned to United States Navy custody and decommissioned on 16 March 1946' while NavSource records 'decommissioned and transferred to the United Kingdom, 2 December 1944' - reconciled as USN decommissioning at transfer with Royal Navy payoff/return to custody on 16 March 1946 at Subic Bay.

- Finding
- Archival leads (not retrieved - research-room or reproduction order required; no spend authorized): NARA holds the LST-337 war diary and the COM 8th Fleet action report serial 00264 covering the Salerno landings (both cited in NavSource photo captions); the Army Air Corps photograph of LST-337 off Salerno 15 September 1943 is NARA NAID 193778459 and the Army Signal Corps Salerno photos are in series III-SC (photo 181077). WWII deck logs are in NARA RG 24 and war diaries in RG 38. Royal Navy service records for HM LST-337 (December 1944 - March 1946, including the Malaya operation) are at UK The National Archives (ADM series).

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-337-01 through sl-uss-lst-337-11
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LST-337 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches for "LST-337" and "LST 337" both returned zero results; the docket (type=r) index query was blocked by the fleet-wide API pacing limiter after repeated spaced attempts - logged as blocked in the search ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying litigation naming this hull.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942 Navy-yard-built amphibious hull is era-consistent with retained asbestos-containing materials. The CourtListener opinion index was searched clean (0 hits, both spellings); the docket index remains a genuine open gap (paced, not run) - see search_ledger sl-09. Deck logs, war diary, NNY work records, and disposal documents are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
