DANFS (NHHC): LST-377 was laid down 28 November 1942 at Quincy, Mass., by the Bethlehem Steel Co.; launched 1 February 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Edward T. Dobbyn; commissioned 8 February 1943, Lt. A. C. Parks, USNR, in command. World War II European-theater operations: Sicilian occupation (July 1943), Salerno landings (September 1943), Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings (January through March 1944), Invasion of Normandy (June 1944). Post-war occupation duty in the Far East until early February 1946; decommissioned 7 June 1946; struck from the Navy list 31 July 1946; sold 1 April 1948 to Bethlehem Steel Co., Bethlehem, Pa., and subsequently scrapped. Earned four battle stars for World War II service.

    Limitations
Authoritative official ship history for identity and service. DANFS lists only European-theater operations and Far East occupation duty; NavSource additionally documents Asiatic-Pacific theater assignment (LST Flotilla 36 / Group 107 / Division 214) - a completeness gap, not a conflict. Contains no asbestos, materials, or condition information; supports no asbestos claim.

Specifications: 1,625 t light / 4,080 t full / 2,366 t beaching; 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam; 11.6 kt trial; complement 13 officers / 104 enlisted; troop accommodations 16 officers / 147 enlisted; 2 GM 12-567A 900-hp diesels, Falk main reduction gear, 2 propellers 1,700 shp, twin rudders, 3 diesel-drive 100 kW 230V DC generators. Commanding-officer list (Parks; Cunningham; Hynes; Dukes) and award record (American Campaign Medal; EAME Medal with 4 stars; Asiatic-Pacific Medal; WWII Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Medal with Asia clasp). Photographic record: LST-377 beached at Ajaccio, Corsica, 25-26 March 1944 during the Naples-Ajaccio-Nisida convoy (with reference to the LST-326 war diary), and under way in San Francisco Bay early 1946 carrying LCT-531 (NHHC photo NH 79008).

    Limitations
Canonical per-hull compiled archive (volunteer-maintained), not itself an official record - its entries restate official sources (DANFS text, NHHC photo NH 79008, war-diary excerpts). Campaign date ranges and Pacific flotilla assignments add detail beyond the DANFS narrative. No asbestos, materials, or condition content; supports no asbestos claim.

    Finding
Bureau of Ships Ships' Data 1945, Vol. 2 (NAVSHIPS 250-011): the vessel roster lists LST377-379 as in service on the Navy List as of January 1945 (no strike/transfer/cancellation annotation), and the LST design table gives the class machinery and characteristics for design group LST1-490 (which includes LST-377): 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam, 2,366 t beaching / 4,080 t trial displacement, 11.6 kt, 2 General Motors 12-567A diesel engines, 1,700 shp - diesel plant, no boilers.

Official BuShips document. The roster entry names this hull (in service, January 1945); the machinery/characteristics data is design-group level (LST1-490), not a hull-specific survey. No materials or asbestos content anywhere in the document. Note: prior class-profile work cited this file at shipscribe.com/styles/usnaux/sdb/SDB1945v2.pdf - that path now returns HTTP 404; the live path is /pubs/SDB1945v2.pdf (verified 2026-10-02).

Class/era inference for this diesel-powered LST-1-class hull: with no boilers, the asbestos-relevant applications are GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation-space insulation, machinery packing, and winch/crane brake linings - the era-standard applications documented for WWII shipbuilding generally.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no ship-level asbestos record exists for this hull. The Corn & Starr paper documents wartime shipbuilding asbestos policy/practice at program level; it does not name this vessel, LSTs, or any specific product installed aboard. Establishes no quantities, no present-day presence (hull scrapped 1948), and no exposure for any individual.

    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing 1975 policy removed and replaced with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed to accomplish necessary repairs; modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas where repairs would be expected during a ship's next operating cycle - i.e., original-era insulation typically remained in place for decades unless a yard period disturbed it.

    Limitations
Program-level documentation only - and it POSTDATES this hull, which was sold for scrapping in 1948; the 1975/1979 in-service policies never applied to LST-377. GAO fieldwork covered Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards. Value here is confirming WWII-era Navy hulls carried asbestos insulation that the service managed in place - it does not establish that asbestos was aboard this specific vessel.

    Finding
Reputable-press veteran account (Washington Times-Herald, 2005): crewman Tom Graham Sr. recalled beaching LST-377 on Juno Beach on 6 June 1944 and making multiple trips to the Normandy beaches; the article reports '75 crewmen and five officers' guiding the ship in 1944 and describes ongoing crew reunions. It also records that crewman Bob Hirt obtained the ship's logs about 15 years after the war - indicating the wartime deck logs existed in private hands circa 1960.

    LST-377 crew (1944)
    Limitations
Veteran recollection as reported by local press, not a Navy operational record. The '75 crewmen and five officers' figure is a 1944 operational recollection that differs from the design complement (13 officers / 104 enlisted) - carried as a discrepancy, not merged (see gaps). The Juno Beach detail is consistent with the Normandy campaign credit but beach-level detail is not in DANFS. No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming LST-377 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion search on the exact hull string 'LST-377' returned zero results, and the RECAP docket index returned a single non-qualifying name collision - Perozo-Rangel v. Noem, S.D. Tex. 5:26-cv-00358 (2026), a federal habeas corpus petition (alien detainee) whose RECAP-indexed document text matched the string; the case has no connection to the vessel or to asbestos. The unhyphenated 'LST 377' opinion variant could not be swept - the fleet request budget was exhausted this session (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped in 1948, before modern asbestos-records regimes, and has no museum-preservation track that would generate hazmat documentation.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943 hull built to standard LST-1-class practice is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials. The CourtListener sweep is partial: opinion index queried and empty; RECAP docket index returned one incidental name collision (habeas exhibit string); the 'LST 377' (unhyphenated) opinion variant could not be completed under fleet pacing this session and remains open. Does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
