    Finding
LST-380 was laid down 10 December 1942 at Quincy, Mass., by the Bethlehem Steel Co.; launched 10 February 1943, sponsored by Mrs. D. J. Callahan; and commissioned 15 February 1943, Lt. Marcus A. Goodrich, USNR, in command. Assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East theater, she participated in the Sicilian occupation (9-15 July 1943), the Salerno landings (9-24 September 1943), and the invasion of Normandy (6-25 June 1944). She was decommissioned and transferred (loaned) to the United Kingdom 20 November 1944 (HM LST-380), returned to US naval custody 11 April 1946, decommissioned and sold 7 June 1946 to the United States Military Government, Korea, and struck from the Naval Register 19 July 1946. LST-380 earned three battle stars for World War II service.

NavSource reproduces the ship's ONI-1945 specification block: displacement 1,625 t light / 4,080 t full (sea-going, 1,675-ton load) / 2,366 t; 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam; speed 11.6 kt trial; endurance 24,000 nm at 9 kt at 3,960 t; complement 13 officers / 104 enlisted plus troop accommodations 16 officers / 147 enlisted; propulsion two General Motors 12-567A 900-hp diesels on Falk reduction gears, twin screws 1,700 shp - a diesel plant with no boilers. Photo record documents the hull loading at Brixham Harbour, England, 1 June 1944 for the cross-channel invasion (US Army Signal Corps SC206438) and unloading onto a floating causeway at Normandy June-July 1944 (US NARA identifier 193784531); a crew photo shows CO Marcus Goodrich circa 1 June 1944 at Brixham. The commanding-officer table lists Lt. Marcus A. Goodrich, USNR (15 February 1943 - 14 April 1944) and Lt. Micken Shipp Beasley, USNR (14 April 1944 - 20 November 1944).

ONI-1945 figures are design/standard figures, not this hull's measured crew count; NavSource is a volunteer transcription archive (authoritative-adjacent, not a primary repository). The diesel-plant confirmation is relevant to the exposure pathway analysis only (no boiler lagging); the source contains no asbestos statement and supports no asbestos claim.

The table lists the yard under 'General Dynamics' - the yard's 1963-and-later owner; the 1942 builder of record is Bethlehem Steel Co. (DANFS/NavSource).

Reputable specialist secondary reference, not a primary registry; build dates corroborate DANFS but the 'to Taiwan 1955' custody leg is secondary-sourced only and unverified against any registry. Yard column uses later owner name (General Dynamics) - anachronistic for the 1942-43 build; builder of record is Bethlehem Steel Co. The same source's yard-history page (shipbuildinghistory.com/shipyards/large/bethquincy.htm) identifies the Quincy yard as the Fore River shipyard - basis for the 'Fore River yard' label in this record's builder field. Disposition conflict documented: (a) NavSource records 'Final Disposition, fate unknown' after the 7 June 1946 sale to the U.S. Military Government, Korea; (b) Colton's builder table (also Naval Marine Archive, citing the same references) tracks the hull 'to Korea 1946, to Taiwan 1955'; (c) the Wikipedia infobox asserts 'lost 25 August 1958' - unverified, and the documented ex-US LST sunk in the 24 August 1958 Kinmen (Taiwan Strait) action was the chartered transport Tai Sheng, identified in ROC-Navy LST roster reproductions as ex-LST-237, not LST-380; (d) a Wikipedia mirror version additionally contains a paragraph identifying 'ex-LST-380' as the Astoria, Oregon salvage vessel Salvage Chief - Salvage Chief is documented as ex-USS LSM-380 (Landing Ship Medium, Brown Shipbuilding, Houston, 1945), an LST-vs-LSM name collision.

The record does NOT assert a final fate: 'to Taiwan 1955' is secondary-only; 'lost 25 Aug 1958' is unverified and rests on a likely conflation with the ex-LST-237 Tai Sheng (sunk 24 Aug 1958, a different hull); the Salvage Chief identification is a documented LST/LSM name collision. Class/design record: the Bureau of Ships Ships' Data 1945 Vol. 2 (NAVSHIPS 250-011) LST design table documents the LST-1-series type plant as two General Motors 12-567A diesels (~1,700 shp, Falk gears, twin screws) - a diesel ship with no boiler plant - with accommodations for 13 officers and ~106 enlisted plus embarked troops. Era/design asbestos inference for diesel-powered LSTs concentrates in engine-room and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, deck coverings, accommodation/bulkhead insulation, and winch brake linings.

GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing policy since 1975 removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or when required for repairs, modified in 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - program-level confirmation that the Navy used and managed asbestos insulation fleet-wide, including in the private yards that built the LST program's ships.
