    Finding
NHHC DANFS states that LST-381 was laid down at Quincy, Massachusetts, by Bethlehem Steel Co. on 1942-12-10; launched 1943-02-10; and commissioned 1943-02-15. It assigns the ship to the European theater and lists participation in the Sicilian occupation (July 1943), Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings (January-February 1944), and the Normandy invasion (June 1944). DANFS states that she transferred to the United Kingdom 1944-12-19, was decommissioned after return to U.S. Navy custody 1946-06-10, struck 1946-07-19, sold 1947-09-11, subsequently scrapped, and earned three World War II battle stars.

This is a ship-history source. It contains no asbestos, insulation-material, machinery-component, survey, abatement, or exposure finding and supports no asbestos claim.

    Finding type

    Finding
A National Bureau of Standards directory of commodity specifications identifies U.S. Government, Navy Department Specification 32F3a (1945) as 'Felt, Insulating, Asbestos.' This establishes that the Navy maintained an asbestos-insulating-felt specification in the vessel's construction era.

    Limitations
Era-level specification evidence only. The directory does not name LST-381, the LST-1 class, Bethlehem Steel, a component, an order, or an installation; it does not establish that asbestos felt was installed aboard this hull, its quantity, location, condition, worker exposure, or causation.

    Finding
NARA's guide for asbestos research aboard Navy vessels identifies RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence, RG 19 amphibious-vessel General Information Books, RG 38 amphibious-vessel Board of Inspection and Survey reports, and RG 19 ship engineering drawings as responsive records. It explains that hull-number and class correspondence can be used to pursue machinery and material information, and that drawings filed under S39 (insulation and lagging) may be relevant.

    1940-1978 record-series coverage
    Limitations
NARA describes research pathways and record series, not contents retrieved for LST-381. No LST-381 box, drawing, specification, survey, or inspection report was retrieved in this batch; this is not evidence of asbestos aboard the hull.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation record naming USS LST-381 was located in the completed authenticated CourtListener exact-name opinion search, which returned zero results. The unquoted hull-number docket query 'LST-381' returned 4,537 tokenized results; its reviewed first-page results were unrelated litigation and are classified as name/token collisions, not vessel litigation. The exact-name docket query was paced by the fleet-wide CourtListener limiter before a result was returned.

    Limitations
A zero-result opinion search and reviewed token-collision results do not prove that no case, asbestos, exposure, or liability exists. CourtListener docket coverage is incomplete here because the exact-name docket request was paced before response and the broad hull query is not an exact-phrase result set. No litigation inference is made.
