    Finding
DANFS records that LST-383 was laid down 16 June 1942 at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co.; launched 28 September 1942; and commissioned 27 October 1942. It assigns the ship to the European theater and lists the Sicilian occupation (July 1943), Salerno landings (September 1943), Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings (January-March 1944), and invasion of Normandy (June 1944). DANFS says the vessel transferred to the United Kingdom 29 November 1944, was sold to Netherlands East Indies Maritime Customs 10 June 1946, was struck 3 July 1946, and earned four World War II battle stars.

    Limitations
This is a live transcription of DANFS, not the canonical NHHC page: the canonical NHHC URL returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-02 and is therefore not cited as live. The entry documents history only; it contains no asbestos, material, survey, abatement, health, or litigation finding.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
NavSource's per-hull page identifies USS LST-383 as an LST-1-class tank landing ship built at Newport News; gives campaign date bands; and gives a diesel configuration of two General Motors 12-567A 900 hp engines, a Falk main reduction gear, three diesel-drive generators, two propellers, and 1,700 shp. Its specification block gives 13 officers and 104 enlisted, plus troop accommodations for 16 officers and 147 enlisted. It says the vessel was decommissioned and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HM LST-383 on 20 November 1944, sold to Netherlands East Indies Maritime Customs 10 June 1946, and struck 3 July 1946; final fate is unknown.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-maintained naval-photo archive, not an official Navy record; its history and specifications overlap DANFS except that it dates the United Kingdom transfer/decommissioning 20 November 1944 while DANFS says 29 November. The page has no asbestos, survey, abatement, health, or litigation information. A diesel plant without an identified boiler narrows, but does not eliminate, possible asbestos pathways.

    Finding
A peer-reviewed review of shipboard asbestos use reports asbestos-containing products in joiner-bulkhead systems in living spaces, insulation on hot-water and steam piping, boilers and tanks, machinery parts, machinery casings and lagging, and vinyl-asbestos deck/floor tile. It states that ship-specific specifications and testing are needed to determine whether a particular vessel contains asbestos. This provides general maritime context for a 1942-built LST but does not identify asbestos aboard LST-383.

    Limitations
General maritime review; it does not name LST-383, the LST-1 class, Newport News Shipbuilding, or an LST design. It cannot establish any product, quantity, location, condition, crew exposure, disease, or legal eligibility for this hull.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the completed public-source review: no asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, government study, or product documentation naming USS LST-383 was found in the completed sources. CourtListener was not completed: the authenticated helper reported that the fleet-wide paced request budget was momentarily spent before a result could be returned. Litigation is therefore an open gap, not a negative litigation finding.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. This row does not report a completed CourtListener sweep, does not establish or defeat any exposure claim, and does not establish legal eligibility. State-court, unindexed, and nonpublic records are outside the completed review.

Page introduction and deck-log description; request guidance for logs not available online
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA explains that Navy deck logs are chronological accounts of notable events occurring in and around a ship, and directs researchers to contact its textual reference staff for logs not listed online. WWII-era LST-383 deck logs and construction/outfitting records are unreviewed primary-record leads that could document repair or material history, but no hull-specific log or specification was retrieved in this session.

    Limitations
This is record-group guidance, not a retrieval of LST-383 records. Deck logs may not identify asbestos or materials even if located; no assertion about the existence, contents, or digitization status of this hull's records is made.
