[1]Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, USS LST-40 entry (live HyperWar transcription of the Navy history entry) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Full entry; construction and commissioning paragraph; World War II operations paragraph; decommissioning/transfer/striking paragraph; battle-star sentence.
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The DANFS entry states that LST-40 was laid down on 3 June 1943 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Dravo Corporation; launched on 7 August 1943; and commissioned on 15 September 1943. It served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater, including the Marianas (Saipan and Tinian) and Okinawa operations; performed postwar occupation duty in the Far East; was decommissioned on 18 February 1946; sold to the United States Military Government, Korea, in February 1947; and struck from the Navy list on 5 March 1947. The entry credits four World War II battle stars. Its southern Solomon Islands campaign date is listed as June 1943 (sic) and is excluded because it predates the ship's commissioning.

- Limitations
- The transcription is live, but the NHHC official page returned 502 Bad Gateway when opened on 2026-10-02. The entry's stated June 1943 southern Solomon Islands campaign date is marked sic and conflicts with the September 1943 commissioning date; it is not treated as a ship operation. The DANFS entry does not state crew complement, later disposition, current location, propulsion particulars, or asbestos status. The entry documents service chronology, not exposure or asbestos-containing materials.

[3]U.S. General Accounting Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (1979), official product page [gao]
- Locator
- Highlights section; summary of scope and 1975 Navy policy.
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO report HRD-80-2 reviewed the Navy use of asbestos in ships and reported the Navy policy in 1975 was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for necessary repairs. The report is Navy-wide program context and does not identify asbestos aboard LST-40.

- Limitations
- GAO reviewed shipyard worker protection and Navy ship asbestos use across shipbuilding/repair operations; its summary does not identify LST-40 or its class, materials aboard, quantities, locations, crew exposure, retention, or injury. This is Navy-wide era context only, not a ship-specific finding.

[4]Authenticated CourtListener helper searches (exact-name opinion/docket); no usable result data returned before the fleet limiter stopped the exact-hull-number search. [court_record]
- Locator
- See search_ledger entries cl-01 through cl-04.
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying litigation result could be classified because the authenticated CourtListener exact-name search did not return usable results before the fleet-wide limiter stopped further requests. The sweep is blocked/incomplete, not a no-result finding.

[5]Research search ledger for this record: DANFS/NHHC; NARA ship-log finding aid; Naval Sea Systems Command public asbestos materials page (page returned 403); Navy-wide GAO report HRD-80-2; and live NavSource LST-40 archive page. [other_primary]
- Locator
- Search ledger rows sl-01 through sl-07.
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, material history drawing, or hazardous-material disclosure for LST-40 was located in the public sources searched for this record. This is a bounded negative finding, not proof that asbestos was absent.

- Limitations
- The public-source review was not exhaustive; the CourtListener sweep was blocked and NARA deck logs were not inspected. Failure to locate records does not establish absence of asbestos, lack of exposure, or legal ineligibility. Navy-wide policy presumption remains class/era evidence only.
