Documented for this hull: 'LST-5 was laid down on 12 July 1942 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp.; launched on 3 October 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Wanetta Rose Barker; and commissioned on 22 February 1943.' Assigned to the European theater: Sicilian occupation July 1943; Salerno landings September 1943; Invasion of Normandy June 1944. 'LST-5 was decommissioned sometime after World War II ended and was struck from the Navy list on 1 August 1947. On 7 October 1947, she was sold to the Tung Hwa Trading Co., of Singapore, for scrapping. LST-5 earned three battle stars for World War II.'

Ship's own war diary, Operation Husky (Sicily). 9 July: underway in convoy, air escort of six P-38s; passed Linosa and Gozo. Night 9-10 July: steaming with 13 other LSTs of Task Group 85.1 about 15 miles off Sicily awaiting the landings; observed the initial assault - rockets, artillery and machine-gun fire, enemy searchlights and flares. 10 July: maneuvered between Scoglitti and Cape Scalambri awaiting beach orders; anchored two miles offshore; unloading delayed by conflicting orders between CTG 85.1.2 and the commanding general of II Corps; AA fire and shore artillery flashes observed through the night. 11 July: 1315 German aircraft bomb fell ~75 yards off the port bow; 1345 attacked by a single German plane driven off by 20 mm fire (84 rounds 20 mm and 300 rounds .50 cal expended, the latter fired by machine guns mounted on vehicles on the top deck); 1510 steering gear failed just before the ship struck LST-389 (approach had touched an offshore sandbar ~100 ft short, throwing the bow left and nullifying right rudder); 1515 beached at Blue 2 south of Scoglitti and began unloading vehicles from the tank deck under intermittent air alarms.

No casualties or ship damage. D-Day conditions: constant shelling from the beaches by 88 mm and 210 mm guns, floating mines sighted, German tanks engaging landing forces, shells falling off both quarters. 1740 on 9 September a German Focke-Wulf 190 attacked from astern out of the sun; the ship's No. 2 and No. 6 20 mm guns and 3-inch/50 cal battery opened fire and the 3-inch/50 scored a direct hit - the plane broke up and crashed into the sea (90 rounds 20 mm and 1 round 3-inch/50 expended). Ship's own war diaries document the fall-1943 shuttle period and the start of repositioning to the UK. October entries show repeated runs into Bizerte via the swept channel, anchoring in Bizerte harbor/Lac de Bizerte. 1 November 1943: moored Berth #1 Karuba (Naval Operating Base Bizerte area), took 31,900 gallons of fuel from shore supply lines and embarked five LCMs lashed on the main deck for shipment; mid-November underway west; closes 29 November 1943 anchored at Mers el Kebir, Algeria (35 deg 43'33"N, 00 deg 41'30"W). No December 1943 or 1944 war diary for this hull is digitized in the NARA catalog - the Normandy period is documented only at DANFS campaign level.

    Finding
DANFS states only that LST-5 'was decommissioned sometime after World War II ended' and does not mention Royal Navy service. NavSource records U.S. Navy decommissioning 17 November 1944, transfer and Royal Navy commissioning as HM LST-5 on 18 November 1944, a Belfast machinery refit 22 January-11 April 1945, Far East service from summer 1945, and RN paying-off 19 February 1946 - corroborated by dated HM LST-5 photographs (Madras 24 November 1945 and 2-3 January 1946; Singapore 2 August 1946). The NavSource RN timeline is adopted in this record; the DANFS phrasing is carried as a loose summary of the RN paying-off, not the U.S. decommissioning date.

GAO documented asbestos thermal insulation as the Navy's major shipboard use of asbestos; the review covered Navy asbestos protection at Long Beach and Norfolk shipyards, the 1975 policy removing/replacing damaged or repair-disturbed insulation, and its 1979 modification to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas - with asbestos-free specifications adopted in 1973. Places a hull built 1942 and in service 1943-46 squarely inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era.

Horton, pushing a four-barge tow (464 ft overall), attempted to pass and one barge struck the LST's bow, damaging it and stoving in a gasoline barge whose cargo spilled into the river. CourtListener exact-phrase opinion searches returned one genuine ship-specific case - United States v. Horton (admiralty collision, other litigation, ev-13) - plus unrelated/noise hits classified as name collisions; the unhyphenated opinion variant and the docket index were repeatedly blocked by the shared fleet pacing budget this session - logged as blocked where not run, not as negative results. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; 'asbestos aboard' content consists of law-firm marketing pages asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
