- Documented for this hull: laid down 29 August 1943 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp.; launched 16 October 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Tito Tarquinio; commissioned 27 November 1943. Assigned first to the European theater: Normandy invasion 6-25 June 1944; invasion of southern France 15 August - 25 September 1944. Transferred to the Asiatic-Pacific theater: Okinawa assault 18-30 June 1945. Occupation duty in the Far East until early February 1946; decommissioned 6 February 1946; struck from the Navy list 8 September 1952. 'On 14 November 1952, she was redesignated ARB-13 and transferred to Norway as Ellida (A-534).' Returned to the United States 1 July 1960; retransferred to Greece 16 September 1960, serving the Greek Navy as 'Sakipia (A-329)'. Three battle stars for World War II service.

- Dravo construction trades (1943); ship's company 13 officers / 104 enlisted + embarked troops; SCAJAP-era crews (1946-1952)
- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS compresses the February 1946 decommissioning to 'upon her return to the United States' - NavSource's more detailed record places the decommissioning in the Far East with SCAJAP assignment (see ev-02 and gaps). No separate DANFS ARB-13 entry exists (danfs/a/arb-13.html returned 404 this session) - the ARB-13 designation is covered only within this LST-50 entry.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates here match DANFS exactly and specification values match the BuShips SDB 1945 v2 design table, so it is carried as verified for identity/milestones. Contains no asbestos content. Enlisted complement shows 104 vs the ~106 class figure - minor variance noted in gaps.

- Finding
- A documented yard-rework event for this hull: the ex-LST-50 was converted to battle damage repair ship (ARB-13) configuration at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for transfer to Norway, photographed post-conversion with her hull number not yet changed from LST-50. ARB conversions replaced the LST tank-deck layout with repair-shop facilities (machine shops, foundry, carpenter/electrical shops per the class conversion pattern) - an extensive interior-rework event at a US naval shipyard, 1952-53.

- Limitations
- Photo-caption sourcing only: establishes location (Puget Sound NSY) and fact of conversion, not its scope, dates, or material content. No work package, availability record, or hazmat record for the conversion was located - asbestos scope is inference only. Date unknown within the 1952-11-14 redesignation / Norway-transfer window. - asbestos_application
- Finding
- BuShips design data confirms this hull's machinery class: LST1-490 group (which includes LST-50) carried 2 x G.M. Diesel 12-567A at 1,700 - a diesel plant with no boilers. Era/design inference for diesel-powered LSTs: asbestos-relevant applications are GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings; the SDB v2 roster lists LST-50 inside the unannotated LST44-61 block (still in USN service as of January 1945).

- Population
- Dravo construction trades (1943); ship's company and embarked troops (1943-46)
- Limitations
- Class/design documentation, not a hull record: the SDB table names the LST1-490 design group, not LST-50's installed materials. Asbestos content aboard this hull is era inference - period insulation, gasket, packing, and friction products of this era were commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber, but no source located states asbestos was aboard this hull. Establishes no quantities and no individual exposure.

- Finding type

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire USN construction and service era (1943-1946) and the 1952-53 Puget Sound conversion window.

- Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. The hull left USN custody in 1952-60 foreign transfers - post-transfer Norwegian/Greek material conditions are outside GAO scope. - Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LST-50, ARB-13, Ellida, or Sakipis was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener: 'LST-50' opinions returned 0 results; 'LST 50' asbestos opinions returned 0; 'ARB-13' opinions returned 12 results - all name collisions on 'ARB' in arbitration/Air Resources Board contexts; 'LST-50' dockets returned 9 results - all collisions (foreign-arbitration-award enforcement and RICO matters); 'ARB-13' dockets returned 117 results - all collisions ('Exhibit ARB-13' labels in arbitration filing lists); 'Sakipis' returned 0 opinions and 2 docket collisions; 'Ellida' returned 4 opinion collisions (given-name matches) and 21 docket hits whose top-sampled rows are person-name collisions.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent inference stands on its own merits. CourtListener coverage is a text search of indexed opinions and RECAP dockets - unindexed PACER dockets, state-court filings, and non-US (Norwegian/Greek) proceedings are outside coverage. The 'Ellida' docket tail was not fully enumerated when the shared fleet query budget was exhausted - sampled top hits are person-name collisions; residual unreviewed rows are a documented partial-coverage limitation (see gaps). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION: the class-profile shorthand 'USS LST-50 - converted to USS ARB-13' reads as if the USN converted and operated this hull as a battle damage repair ship, which it did not. The documented sequence: she served the USN only as LST-50 (1943-46), became SCAJAP Q-046, was struck from the Naval Register 8 September 1952, and was redesignated ARB-13 on 14 November 1952 in the same action that prepared her foreign transfer - then converted at Puget Sound NSY for Norway. No USN commissioning or operation under ARB-13 occurred; unlike the wartime Aristaeus-class conversions, this was a Mutual Defense Assistance-era redesignation for allied transfer.
