Further captions place her on the beaches at Le Havre (1944), offloading German POWs at a British port (1944), and at Drammensfjord, Norway, 4 June 1945 - all credited to 'LST 511 War History and Cruise Book, page 2; NARA Identifier NAID 77707447, Micro Serial Number 159227.' [4]USS LST-511 Enclosure (A), Report of Action Taking Place Morning of 28 April 1944 - declassified ship's action report, transcription hosted at exercisetiger.org.uk (document source credited: The Eugene Eckstam Archive; U.S. National Archives and Records Administration); corroborated at convoy level by NHHC, 'Exercise Tiger: Disaster at Slapton Sands' (history.navy.mil, live) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Enclosure (A) Parts I-VI + casualty report table (exercisetiger.org.uk document archive)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The ship's own action report places LST-511 in Convoy T-4 during the Exercise Tiger disaster: departed Plymouth 27 April 1944, third in column (LSTs 515, 496, 511, 531, 58, joined by the Brixham section 499, 289, 507). At 0205 LST-507 was torpedoed, at 0221 LST-531 was torpedoed '100 yards astern'; LST-511 sounded General Quarters 0208, commenced firing with LSTs 515 and 496 on E-boat targets at 0222-0224 (her 20mm and 40mm crews believed to have hit one several times), and was strafed by LST-496's after port gun, 'wounding numerous personnel'; an E-boat later passed within ~15 yards of her bow, below the guns' depression. Damage: two riddled life rafts, one cleat shot in two, shrapnel punctures; wounded sent ashore 0945. Ammunition expended: 20mm 120 rounds, 40mm 11 rounds. The NHHC account documents the disaster at convoy level: death toll 'approached or exceeded 700, more than would die in the actual landings at Utah Beach.' The attached casualty table names wounded crew (S2c Schultz, S2c Wolbach, Cox. Blazer, S2c Davis, SK2c Gallagher, others) and embarked men of Company B, 261st Medical Battalion, all with 20mm gunshot wounds treated aboard.

- Limitations
- Primary-document transcription hosted on a memorial site; provenance credited to the Eckstam Archive and NARA, but the underlying NARA document was not independently re-verified this session. Confirms participation, casualties, and damage only - no asbestos or material content. NHHC's Exercise Tiger account (history.navy.mil, verified live) corroborates the convoy-level event: ~700 dead across T-4, more than the Utah Beach landings.

- Canadian merchant crews; any refit trades at undocumented 1947 conversion yard
- Limitations

Owner dates conflict with NavSource's chain (NavSource: Rive-Nord 1948, Agence 1969; BGSU: Rive-Nord 1969-76, Agence 1976-79) - BGSU registry dates carried, conflict logged in gaps. BGSU records 'fate unknown' and does NOT confirm the 1992 Long Harbour loss in secondary sourcing. The 1947 rebuild to 'Canadian measures' is a registry note only - the refit yard and work scope are undocumented. No asbestos content.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-491-class tank landing ship built in 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. As a diesel ship she carried no boiler plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - but era-standard applications aboard a ship of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery-space thermal and acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. Her conversion to a hospital ship for Normandy (interior medical outfitting) and her 1947 rebuild to Canadian measures added interior-scope work; both are undocumented at the work level.

No quantity, no manufacturer attribution. The design-table source (BuShips SDB 1945 v2) was previously verified in the class session but its URL is now dead (search_ledger sl-uss-lst-511-09) - the row rests on the live NavSource specifications plus the class profile's documented finding.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS LST-511 (or her merchant identities Guy Bartholomew / Fort Kent) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was searched authenticated on 2026-10-02 - 'LST-511' and 'LST 511' across type=o and type=r indexes, all zero hits; a true negative result, not a throttle. No NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation for the Chicago Bridge & Iron Seneca yard was located. The only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (asbestos-ships.com and similar listicles asserting asbestos at CB&I without primary sourcing) - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull's 45-year commercial life and undocumented 1947 rebuild leave the work-level record open. Two supplemental CourtListener variants ('LST511', 'Guy Bartholomew') could not be run before the fleet pacing budget expired - logged pending, not as results. Her wartime cruise book (NAID 77707447) and deck logs are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
