- Documented for this hull: 'LST-536 was laid down on 19 October 1943 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 27 December 1943; sponsored by Mrs. James M. Lavin; and commissioned on 9 February 1944. During World War II, LST-536 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Following the war, LST-536 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early January 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 23 January 1946. On 21 February 1947, the ship was made available for disposal to the Republic of Korea and struck from the Navy list on 5 March 1947. LST-536 earned one battle star for World War II service.'

Live NHHC page not found at any current URL pattern (history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/lst-536.html and /content/history/nhhc/... variant both returned 404 on 2026-10-02 - the standing NHHC link-rot defect); citation is the Wayback capture of the official history.navy.mil DANFS page. DANFS's 'returned to the United States' decommission framing conflicts with NavSource's SCAJAP designation (see gaps). DANFS does not mention her Pacific-theater reassignment, which NavSource documents.

- NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down 19 October 1943 at Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co., Evansville, IN; launched 27 December 1943; commissioned USS LST-536, 9 February 1944, LT. Charles A. Flood, USNR, in command. Campaign credit: 'Invasion of Normandy, 6 to 25 June 1944' under the European-Africa-Middle East Campaign ribbon. Later assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater under LST Flotilla Thirty-Seven (CAPT. Riley), LST Group One Hundred Nine (CDR. E. W. Wilson USNR), LST Division Two Hundred-Seventeen, LT. John Delong USNR in command. Navy Occupation Service medal periods in the Far East: 15 October-13 November 1945 and 6-23 January 1946. 'Decommissioned, 23 January 1946 and assigned to Commander Naval Forces Far East (COMNAVFE) Shipping Control Authority for Japan (SCAJAP), redesignated Q024. Struck from the Naval Register, 25 February 1946. Transferred to the Republic of Korea, 21 February 1947. Final Disposition, fate unknown.' Commanding officers listed: LT. Flood (9 Feb 1944-May 1944), LT. DeLong (May 1944-May 1945), LT. Hoban (May 1945-November 1945), LT. Wofford (November 1945-23 Jan 1946). A page photograph shows USS LST-536 beached at Normandy, circa June or July 1944 (credited via the family of crewman Ernest Glenn Johnston, SC/3). Awards line: American Campaign Medal, European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal (1), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Medal (Asia clasp); one battle star.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track DANFS on construction, commissioning, and decommissioning but CONFLICT on the struck date (25 Feb 1946 here vs DANFS 5 Mar 1947) and its occupation-service paragraph is mislabeled 'USS LST-535' (a page transcription defect). NavSource's SCAJAP/Q024 line conflicts with DANFS's 'returned to the United States' framing (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content. The Normandy photo is family-sourced, not an official record.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-491-class tank landing ship built October 1943-February 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-materials era; era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings (accommodation and working spaces), and compartment/accommodation insulation. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

[5]Woolsey v. Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., 119 Ind. App. 391, 88 N.E.2d 54 (Ind. App. 1949) - Industrial Board occupational-disease appeal at the builder's Evansville yard (aggregator text; not a CourtListener opinion) [court_record]

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Published appellate decision documenting occupational-disease litigation at this hull's builder during its construction era: a pipe fitter employed 'in the compartment of ships' at Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron's Evansville yard (21 June - 11 November 1944) died 29 October 1945; his estate claimed death by poisoning from inhaled fumes and gases of welding on galvanized metal under the Indiana Workmen's Occupational Diseases Act. The Industrial Board found no occupational disease and the Court of Appeals affirmed the denial. This is a welding-fume claim, NOT an asbestos claim.

- Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Evansville ship-fitters and welding trades (wartime yard population)
- Limitations
- Yard-level context only: the worker's 1944 employment postdates this hull's January-February 1944 completion window and the claim concerns welding fumes, not asbestos - included to document that the builder's wartime workforce litigated occupational-disease claims in the ship-construction environment. N.E.2d parallel cite rests on the HallApproved opinion index (88 N.E.2d 54; exa.ai's in-text note reads '87 N.E.2d 54' - a one-volume transcription discrepancy, unresolved); 119 Ind. App. 391 is consistent across sources. CourtListener verification query could not be run this session (fleet pacing).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming USS LST-536 (or SCAJAP Q024) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener authenticated searches returned zero opinions and zero dockets for 'LST-536' and zero opinions for 'USS LST-536' OR 'LST 536'. NVR has no entry (pre-1987 disposals not in register). The only 'asbestos aboard' material surfaced is law-firm marketing content and asbestos-jobsite listicles (which name the builder's yard, 'Evansville Shipyard' and 'Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron,' without primary sourcing) - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent materials are a reasonable inference, not a ship-proven fact. NARA catalog could not be queried (JS-rendered, API endpoints return the app shell); WWII deck logs (RG 24) and SCAJAP/ROKN disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
