- DANFS (live NHHC page, verified 2026-10-02): LST-547 was laid down 24 December 1943 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 19 February 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Harold Jpurdan [as printed in DANFS]; commissioned 30 March 1944. Following World War II she performed occupation duty in the Far East until mid-February 1946; she returned to the United States, was decommissioned 28 February 1946, and struck from the Navy list 31 October 1947. On 26 May 1948 the ship was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Co., of Bethlehem, Pa., and subsequently scrapped.

- Limitations
- Establishes identity, construction dates/builder/sponsor, occupation-duty service framing, and disposal chain. Contains no combat-history narrative (construction + postwar/disposal only) and no asbestos, material, or insulation information whatsoever. Sponsor name printed 'Jpurdan' in the live DANFS text - probable OCR/typographical error for 'Jourdan' (secondary sources); carried as printed and flagged in gaps.

- NavSource Amphibious Photo Archive page for USS LST-547 (live navsource.net URL, verified 2026-10-02): LST-542 class tank landing ship; call sign NEHG. Awards listed - American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; WWII Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia clasp (no battle-star device listed). WWII assignment: Asiatic-Pacific Theater - LST Flotilla 37 (CAPT. Riley), LST Group 111 (LCDR. A. H. Tutt), LST Division 221. Navy Occupation Service Medal periods: 9-25 September 1945; 11 October-3 November 1945; 2-28 February 1946. Decommissioned 28 February 1946 and assigned to Commander Naval Forces Far East (COMNAVFE) Shipping Control Authority for Japan (SCAJAP), redesignated Q077. Struck from the Naval Register 31 October 1947; transferred to the Maritime Commission (MARAD) 26 May 1948; final disposition sold for scrapping 26 May 1948 to Bethlehem Steel Co., Bethlehem, PA. - Ship's company 13 officers/104 enlisted; embarked troops up to 16 officers/147 enlisted (spec block)
- Limitations
- Volunteer-compiled archival record consistent with DANFS on every shared fact; used for service detail DANFS does not carry (unit assignments, occupation-service windows, SCAJAP Q077, spec block). Decommissioning sequence stated differently than DANFS - NavSource has the hull decommissioning 28 Feb 1946 into SCAJAP service in the Far East, DANFS says she 'returned to the United States and was decommissioned' - locale of decommissioning is ambiguous between the two sources and flagged in gaps. No asbestos, insulation, or hazmat content on the page.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and mass-production program under which this 1943-44 LST-542-class hull was built at an inland emergency yard (Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron, Evansville).

- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, this class, or this builder and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull - establishes era context only, not quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

- Finding
- Design/era inference (diesel plant): the NavSource spec block documents the LST-542-group plant as diesel - 2 x General Motors 12-567A engines through Falk reduction gears to twin screws, with 3 diesel-drive 100 kW ship's-service generators and NO boilers or steam plant. The boiler/steam-line lagging pathway prominent on steam-driven ships is therefore absent aboard this design; era-consistent asbestos applications aboard WWII diesel amphibious auxiliaries would concentrate in engine-exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, deck tile/underlayment and bulkhead/fire-boundary materials, and brake linings on winches and the stern-anchor windlass.

- Limitations
- INFERENCE ROW - the diesel-plant fact is ship-verified via NavSource (consistent with BuShips Ships' Data 1945 v2 design table; that PDF's previously cited shipscribe.com URL is now dead 404 with no Wayback snapshot - see search_ledger sl-10), but the asbestos application list is era/class inference, not a hull survey or material schedule. Does not establish that any asbestos was installed aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum documentation (hull scrapped 1948 - no extant fabric), or docketed case naming LST-547 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion search returned zero hits for both 'LST-547' and 'USS LST-547' (authenticated API v4); NARA catalog deck-log series (NAID 594258) returned no file unit for this hull; MARAD ShipHistory database returned no vessel card; the Naval Vessel Register carries no record for this stricken-1947 hull (see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-44 wartime hull is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials. The hull was scrapped in 1948, so no present-day survey is possible; the question is historical only. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility. CourtListener DOCKET index unsearched this session (fleet pacing budget spent - see search_ledger sl-05); opinion index is the searched layer.

- Finding
- Archival lead (not retrieved - no spend authorized; catalog check performed): NARA 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations' series (NAID 594258, RG 24 - Bureau of Naval Personnel) holds WWII-era deck logs but no digitized file unit titles itself for LST-547; the hull's 1944-46 commissioned-period deck logs, if surviving, sit in the undigitized portion of that series at Archives II (College Park). BuShips construction/outfitting correspondence for Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron LST contracts would sit in RG 19 (Bureau of Ships); COMNAVFE/SCAJAP vessel records covering the Q077 period sit in RG 331 (Allied Operations/occupation headquarters records).
