- Documented for this hull per DANFS: 'laid down on 30 December 1943 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 22 February 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Robert L. Koch; and commissioned on 3 April 1944. During World War II, LST-548 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. She was then assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and took part in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in June 1945. Following the war, LST-548 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early February 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 15 February 1946. On 31 March 1952, LST-548 was transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service where she served as USNS LST-548. The tank landing ship was struck from the Navy list on 1 January 1960. LST-548 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

- Authoritative service history; contains no asbestos, insulation, or hazardous-material information. Two DANFS claims conflict with the awards-derived campaign record and the Japan-side custody documentation: 'invasion of Normandy in June 1944' (vs Invasion of Southern France, 15 Aug-25 Sep 1944, per NavSource's campaign table and the NAVPERS 15,790-derived awards transcription - see ev-05), and 'returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 15 February 1946' (vs NavSource's 19 Feb 1946 decommissioning with assignment to COMNAVFE SCAJAP as Q067 - and the 1960 disposal record places the hull 'lying damaged at Yokosuka,' i.e., still in Japan). Conflicts carried in gaps. Live NHHC page returned 404 on 2026-10-02; verbatim text cited via Wayback capture 2025-12-09 with ibiblio transcription corroboration.

- Identifies the hull as an LST-542-class tank landing ship. Timeline: laid down 30 December 1943 at Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co., Evansville, IN; launched 22 February 1944; reduced commission 28 March 1944 at Evansville as USS LST-548, LT. John B. Brady, USN, in command; full commission 3 April 1944 at Naval Base Algiers, LA. Campaign table (Europe-Africa-Middle East): Invasion of Southern France, 15 August-25 September 1944; (Asiatic-Pacific): Okinawa Gunto operation, assault and occupation 26-30 June 1945, under LST Flotilla Thirty-Six (CAPT. D. F. J. Shea USN), LST Group One Hundred Eight (LCDR. W. R. Peeler USN), LST Division Two Hundred-Fifteen. Navy Occupation Service Medal windows: 15 October-5 December 1945 and 15 January-15 February 1946. Decommissioned 19 February 1946 and assigned to COMNAVFE Shipping Control Authority for Japan (SCAJAP), redesignated Q067; transferred to Military Sea Transportation Service 31 March 1952, in service as USNS T-LST-548; placed out of service and struck from the Naval Register 1 January 1960; two battle stars for WWII. Final disposition quoted: 'LST-548, lying damaged at Yokosuka, has been sold to Coal Export Corp. for $56,000, for scrapping in Japan' (Marine News, World Ship Society, August 1960, p.178). Specification block: 1,625 t light / 4,080 t full (sea-going draft with 1,675-ton load) / 2,366 t; 328' oa x 50' beam; drafts 2'4" fwd / 7'6" aft light, 8'3" fwd / 14'1" aft sea-going, 3'11" fwd / 9'10" aft landing (500-ton load), 11'2" limiting, 14'1" maximum navigation; 11.6 knots trial; endurance 24,000 miles at 9 knots displacing 3,960 tons; complement 13 officers / 104 enlisted; troop accommodations 16 officers / 147 enlisted; 2 LCVP; cargo 1,600-1,900 tons typical; armament 2 twin 40mm mounts with Mk 51 directors, 4 single 40mm mounts, 12 single 20mm mounts; fuel 4,300 bbls diesel; propulsion two General Motors 12-567A 900hp diesels, single Falk main reduction gears, three diesel-drive 100 kW 230V D.C. ship's service generators, two propellers 1,700 shp, twin rudders - a diesel plant with no boilers. Commanding officers: LT. John B. Brady USN (28 Mar 1944 - Dec 1944), LT. E. B. Falls USNR (Dec 1944 - 19 Feb 1946). NavSource hosts no photographs of this hull.

- Limitations
- Volunteer-compiled archival page quoting Navy sources; consistent with DANFS on milestones where they overlap but conflicts with DANFS on the EAME campaign (Southern France vs Normandy) and on the decommissioning date/location (19 Feb 1946 + SCAJAP Q067 vs DANFS's 15 Feb 1946 after a U.S. return) - both conflicts carried in gaps. Spec data are equipment descriptions only - no asbestos content stated or implied. The 'lying damaged at Yokosuka' sale note documents damage at disposal but does not say when or how the damage occurred. The awards-derived campaign table is the record's better-grounded claim for campaign attribution (see ev-05).

- NPS documents the yard that built this hull: the Navy built Evansville Shipyard on 40 acres on the city's west side, and Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company began production on its first LST within four months of the February 1942 announcement; by February 1945 the yard had produced 167 LSTs, working around the clock at one ship every four days in 1944, plus 13 ammunition lighters and 17 oceangoing barges; wartime employment in the city surged from 18,000 to 60,000 jobs; the last ship launched 12 December 1945 and a January 1946 fire destroyed the yard. Surviving sister USS LST-325 (NRHP-listed 24 June 2009) serves as the USS LST Ship Memorial at Evansville.

- CORRECTION-WEIGHTED CONFLICT: DANFS's service narrative says LST-548 'participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944,' but the awards-derived record - NavSource's campaign table and an independent transcription of the NAVPERS 15,790 (Rev. 1953) awards data - credits this hull with campaign E7, Invasion of Southern France (15 August-25 September 1944), not E5 Normandy, plus P34-1 Okinawa Gunto (26-30 June 1945). Both compilations of the Navy awards data agree; the two-battle-star total is consistent with E7+P34-1. The DANFS 'Normandy' attribution stands alone and is most consistent with the known boilerplate errors in the short LST entries, but it is carried verbatim in ev-01 and flagged here rather than overridden.

- The underlying NAVPERS 15,790 ship-credit lists were not directly retrieved this session; both carriers are compilations derived from that manual. NavSource is a volunteer compilation and officialmilitaryribbons.com is a commercial transcription site - neither is itself an official publication, so the conflict is documented rather than adjudicated. The possibility of non-credited presence off Normandy outside the E5 award window (6-25 June 1944) is not excluded.

- Peer-reviewed scholarship documents that WWII-era U.S. shipyards extensively installed asbestos-containing insulation, lagging, and gaskets in naval construction - the era and program under which this hull was built (1943-44, wartime LST mass production at the Navy-built Evansville Shipyard). For a diesel-powered LST with no boilers, the era-relevant applications concentrate in diesel exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings.

- Limitations
- Era-level scholarship plus class/type inference; the source does not name this hull, class, or yard and does not establish that any specific material aboard this ship contained asbestos. No ship-specific product is verified; the diesel plant (no boilers) narrows the exposure-relevant scope relative to steam vessels. No quantity, manufacturer, or present-day survival claim is made - the hull was scrapped in Japan in 1960.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-548 / USNS T-LST-548 / SCAJAP Q067 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero dockets for "LST-548" and zero opinions for "USS LST-548"/"T-LST-548"/"USNS LST-548"; the bare quoted-hull-number opinion query was rate-limited by the shared fleet quota this session and is carried as a partially-covered sweep, not a clean negative. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no asbestos-specific claim for this hull.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-44-built LST is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and the hull's post-commissioning custody (SCAJAP Japanese crews 1946-1952, MSTS 1952-1960, damaged at Yokosuka, scrapped in Japan 1960) is documented at the event level only, with no materials record. The quoted-hull-number CourtListener opinion sweep was incomplete due to the fleet pace limiter at session end; deck logs and SCAJAP/MSTS records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
