    Finding
The DANFS entry states that LST-553 was laid down on 24 January 1944 at Evansville, Indiana, by Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co.; launched on 16 March 1944; sponsored by Miss Agnes L. Maulding; and commissioned on 22 April 1944. It served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the southern Palau Islands, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, Zambales-Subic Bay, and Okinawa operations. After the war it conducted minesweeping operations around the Japanese home islands and occupation duty in the Far East until early February 1947. It was decommissioned and transferred to the U.S. Army at Yokohama on 13 February 1947, struck from the Navy list on 25 April 1947, and credited with five World War II battle stars.

The capture reproduces the official NHHC DANFS page, but it is archived rather than live. The entry does not identify asbestos, machinery configuration, complement, or final disposition after transfer to the Army.

    Limitations
This is an index to deck-log coverage, not the deck logs themselves, and it does not describe asbestos or onboard materials. The listed logs end on 30 June 1945.

    Finding
NAVSEA's inactive-ship technical manual states that past naval shipbuilding programs used asbestos materials in shipboard installations including thermal insulation and deck tile. LST-553 was constructed in 1944, but this Navy-wide historical statement does not identify the ship or establish that either material was installed aboard it.

    Limitations
General naval shipbuilding context only. It does not mention LST-553, this class, this builder, or the installation of asbestos materials aboard this hull. It supports no ship-specific exposure or product finding.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA explains that research into asbestos aboard a particular U.S. naval ship may require ship inspection reports and engineering drawings, including S103 general-plan booklets, S39 insulation and lagging drawings, and sometimes S48 piping drawings. This research located no ship-specific asbestos record for LST-553 in the sources reviewed; the relevant underlying records were not obtained or searched at document level.

    Limitations
The negative finding is limited to the sources and indexes searched in this project. NARA's guide identifies archival record types that were not examined; absence of a located record is not evidence that asbestos was absent aboard the ship.
