A National Archives-captioned photo (NAID 205586182, USCG photo 26-G-2925) shows the Morotai-bound convoy including LST-565 and LST-605; the page notes the two hulls were four days out of Pearl Harbor when the Morotai landings began 15 September 1944 (Flotilla Sixteen transit) and departed Manus Island 11 October 1944 - i.e., not part of the invasion itself.

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry; its milestone dates track DANFS exactly for this hull and its campaign/flotilla tables are derived from official award and organization records, but it is cited for detail DANFS omits (specs, CO list, flotilla assignment, medal periods). Contains no asbestos content. The pre-1987 scrapping predates modern ACM-handling regulation; no hazmat record for the breakup was located.

    Finding
Two ship-authored action reports are cataloged at NARA for this hull: the Lingayen Gulf reinforcement landing of 11-12 January 1945 (report dated 15 January 1945) and the reinforcement-group run to the Okinawa Gunto of 2-11 May 1945 (report dated 19 May 1945). The parent command's war diary series (COM LST GR 41) covers November and December 1945, and a USCG still photo documents the Morotai-bound convoy transit. These are the highest-value archival leads for this hull's operational record.

Archival leads only: catalog metadata verifies the records exist and are ship-authored; the documents' contents were not reviewed this session and no asbestos/materials content is expected or implied. NARA catalog is JS-rendered; metadata retrieved via the catalog search API. Deck logs and muster rolls for this hull (RG 24) were not located in the digitized catalog and remain an undigitized lead (Fold3 hosts the NARA muster-roll scans).

    Finding
Era/design inference for a diesel-powered LST of the 542 group: with no boilers aboard, the asbestos-relevant applications for the type were GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings. WWII-era insulating and gasket products were commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber, and the wartime government had reserved asbestos supply for shipbuilding.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LST-565. Names era-standard applications for the type, not confirmed installed materials aboard this hull. No quantities; establishes no exposure for any individual. LST-565's short service life (1944-1946) and 1948 scrapping mean no postwar-overhaul or abatement record exists to test the inference against.

    Finding
NPS documents the builder yard: in February 1942 the Department of Navy constructed the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. Shipyard (the Evansville Shipyard) on the Ohio River - a forty-acre plant producing 300 x 50 ft LSTs; at peak, one ship every four days in 1944, with 167 LSTs produced by February 1945 plus 13 ammunition lighters and 17 oceangoing barges - 'the largest inland producer of oceangoing ships.' This hull was built at that yard (laid down 16 March 1944 per DANFS).

Evansville Shipyard wartime workforce (thousands of shift workers)
    Limitations
Yard-level documentation - the NPS page does not name this hull and contains no asbestos or materials content. It establishes where and in what production regime the hull was built, nothing more. No NIOSH, OSHA, EEOICPA, or other federal occupational-health record covering the Evansville yard was located (checked 2026-10-02); the yard was a wartime steel-fabrication/shipbuilding facility, not a DOE atomic program site.

    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - program-level confirmation that asbestos insulation was standard aboard Navy vessels of the wartime era and typically remained in place for decades on surviving hulls.

Program-level documentation, not hull- or class-specific; the 1975/1979 policies postdate this hull's scrapping (1948) and are carried as era context only. gao.gov returns HTTP 403 to automated fetch (product page and full text; standing block per Batch-01/98) - report identity carried from the GAO catalog listing as verified in those batches; full text not reviewed.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation record naming USS LST-565 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener returned zero hits for "LST-565" and "LST 565" in both the opinion (type=o) and docket (type=r) indexes on 2026-10-02; the class-level 'USS LST' asbestos sweep found only an incidental reunion-notice mention of a different hull (LST-579, Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton, S.D.N.Y. 1:07-cv-04771). The only 'asbestos aboard' web material is law-firm marketing listicles (asbestos.com and similar) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - WWII LST construction is era-consistent with asbestos use, and the 1948 scrapping predates any documentation regime that would have produced a hazmat record. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. CourtListener coverage is complete on the hull-number spellings: 'LST-565' and 'LST 565' on both opinion and docket indexes; named-plaintiff searches are impractical for an unnamed hull.
