- Limitations
- Archival catalog description only - the record itself is not digitized (orderable at Kew). Arrival date conflicts slightly across sources: TNA catalog gives 11 August 1944; the Arnold Hague convoy database (via warsailors.com) gives Liverpool arrival 8 August 1944 and lists her destination as Londonderry/Plymouth - secondary sourcing. [5]Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (CSIS), 'Philippines Launches Spratly Runway Repairs' (published 2018-05-25) - satellite-imagery analysis of Thitu (Pag-asa) Island; supplemented by GlobalSecurity.org Philippine Navy landing-ship history (secondary) for the 1992-93 rehabilitation window [reputable_press]
- Locator
- AMTI article paragraph on reef constraints (Thitu Dredgers imagery section)
- Finding type

- Finding
- AMTI (CSIS) satellite-imagery analysis documents the wreck of this hull in Philippine service: 'The coral reef surrounding Thitu makes it impossible for large ships to approach, as evidenced by the rusting hulk of the BRP Lanao del Norte, which ran aground off the northwest edge of the reef in 2004 and is still present.' - confirming the 2004 grounding and the hulk's continued presence as of May 2018. Secondary sourcing (GlobalSecurity.org, Philippine Navy Zamboanga del Sur-class history) reports that LT-504 underwent rehabilitation in 1992-1993 and was among the best-condition surviving Philippine LSTs by 1994 - an interior-rework window on a WWII-era hull.

- Population
- Philippine Navy crew at grounding (2004); salvage/scrapping workers at the wreck (reported 2017+); fishermen and garrison population in the wreck's vicinity
- Limitations
- Think-tank satellite-imagery analysis, not a Philippine Navy disposal record: establishes the grounding year (2004) and the hulk's presence through May 2018, not salvage or dismantling status. The 1992-93 refit detail is secondary (GlobalSecurity.org), not a Philippine Navy record. The 'December 2004' month, resupply-mission context, and 'dismantled 2017 for salvage' variants circulating in secondary sources remain uncited (see gaps). AMTI does not identify the hull's U.S. lineage; the LT-504 identity chain rests on DANFS/NavSource. No asbestos content.

- NPS article, 'Evansville Shipyard' section

- Finding
- NPS documents this hull's builder and build environment: 'The Navy built Evansville Shipyard on 40 acres of land on the city's west side. Within four months after the plant was first announced in February 1942, the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company began production on Evansville Shipyard's first landing ship tank (LST).' The yard produced 167 LSTs by February 1945 at one ship every four days during 1944 - this hull's construction window (March-May 1944) - and 'in January 1946, a fire destroyed Evansville Shipyard.'

- Finding
- A diesel tank landing ship built March-May 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. As a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A, no boilers), the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; era-standard applications for a 1944 diesel amphibious ship were diesel exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, flange and valve gaskets, valve packing, winch and crane brake linings, and electrical insulation. GAO documents that asbestos persisted in non-insulation shipboard applications (gaskets, pipe-hanger liners, electrical resistors, clutches, electric cable) even after the 1973 specification change.

- GAO documents the Navy asbestos era covering this hull's entire U.S. service life: 'although all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables, most ships delivered in the last several years or now under construction have little or no asbestos as thermal insulation, which was the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships'; product specifications for thermal insulation changed to asbestos-free in 1973, yet 'asbestos materials had already been purchased and in some cases installed in ships under construction. Therefore, some ships were delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978'; the Navy enclosure states 'all ships presently in service contain some quantity of asbestos', with thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems the major application, and remaining applications including gaskets and pipe-hanger liners.

- Finding
- An occupational-disease claim litigated against this hull's builder during its construction window - OTHER LITIGATION, not an asbestos case: Elbert Woolsey worked for Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company 'as a pipe fitter in the compartment of ships' from June 21, 1944 to November 11, 1944 - overlapping LST-566's build (laid down March 17, launched May 11) - and his estate alleged death from poisoning by fumes and gases from welding galvanized metal. The Industrial Board found no occupational disease arising out of employment; the Indiana Appellate Court affirmed the award. The record documents that occupational-disease litigation reached this yard's ship-compartment workforce during the LST build era.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, MARAD transfer material, museum documentation, or qualifying litigation naming USS/USNS LST-566 (T-LST-566, SCAJAP Q094, LT-504) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener authenticated searches 2026-10-02 returned zero across the board: '"LST-566"' and '"USS LST-566"' zero on both opinions and RECAP dockets; '"LST 566"' and '"Lanao del Norte"' zero on opinions (the no-hyphen and Philippine-name docket queries remained unrun under fleet pacing - see gaps). Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing listicles asserting asbestos aboard WWII-era Navy LSTs generically, without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 diesel amphibious ship is era-consistent with asbestos-containing insulation and components, her MSTS/SCAJAP operating period is undocumented at record level, and her 2004-grounded deteriorated hulk saw reported salvage with no ACM-handling documentation located. Deck logs (RG 24), MSTS charter/SCAJAP records, and Philippine Navy disposal files are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
