Documented for this hull: 'LST-567 was laid down on 20 March 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co; launched on 15 May 1944; sponsored by Miss Elizabeth Funkey; and commissioned on 1 June 1944.' WWII Asiatic-Pacific operations: Leyte landings (October and November 1944), Lingayen Gulf landing (January 1945), assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto (June 1945). 'Following the war, LST-567 performed occupation duty in the Far East until late January 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 28 January 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 31 October 1947. On 24 May 1948, the ship was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Co., of Bethlehem, Pa., and subsequently scrapped.' Earned three battle stars for WWII service.

Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS asserts the hull 'returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 28 January 1946' - NavSource instead records decommissioning 28 January 1946 with assignment to COMNAVFE SCAJAP as Q032; the two accounts conflict on location/post-decommission disposition (see gaps). Live NHHC page 404s at both current URL patterns; citation is a Wayback capture of the official DANFS text (labeled archived).

    Finding
The yard's production roster lists this hull as Missouri Valley yard hull #92, FY1943 program: keel laid 3/20/44, launched 5/15/44, delivered 6/1/44 - 56 days on the ways, 17 days fitting out afloat, 73 total days - matching DANFS/NavSource milestones. Yard-level facts documented by the same source: the Evansville plant was purpose-built for the war effort on the Ohio River, built 171 LSTs plus LCTs, lighters and seaplane derricks (LCTs etc. at the Leavenworth, KS plant), closed after the war, and was destroyed by fire in 1946. The roster's disposition column carries 'Scrapped 1947' - a year earlier than the DANFS/NavSource 24 May 1948 sale-for-scrap to Bethlehem Steel.

    Limitations
Secondary compilation (well-regarded yard-history reference), not a primary registry - the disposition 'Scrapped 1947' conflicts with the documented 24 May 1948 sale; the 1948 DANFS/NavSource date is carried in the record. Build-time figures (days on ways/fitting out) are yard-compilation data unverified against a primary contract record. No asbestos content.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A tank landing ship built March-June 1944 sits inside the wartime asbestos-use era; the LST-542 design group is diesel-powered (2x GM 12-567A, ~1,700 shp, Falk reduction gears - NO boilers), so the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a diesel LST of this period: diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, winch and crane brake linings; the type's tight internal volume concentrates any lagging disturbance in the machinery spaces.

    Limitations
Coverage limits: CourtListener indexes only a fraction of state trial dockets; unindexed state-court filings, workers' compensation claims, settled cases without docketed opinions, and trust-fund claims would not appear. LSTs were hull-number-only, so litigants naming this ship would use the 'LST-567' string covered by the sweeps - but OCR variance in scanned filings (e.g., 'L.S.T. 567', 'LST- No. 567') could evade exact-phrase matching. A zero hit means no indexed litigation located, not that none exists.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, insulation material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, deck-log-derived repair record, or verified litigation naming USS LST-567 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only 'asbestos aboard LSTs' material surfacing in general web sweeps is law-firm marketing content listing ship classes (e.g., simmonsfirm.com navy-ship listicles) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. No source located that documents the actual breakup location (Bethlehem Steel purchase was 'of Bethlehem, Pa.' per DANFS - the scrapping site is unverified).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard insulation practice and this hull's early scrapping (1948, predating any documented abatement regime) make both presence-at-construction plausible and present-day status moot. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The SCAJAP program that NavSource's 'redesignated Q032' line invokes is documented: the U.S. Navy established the Shipping Control Authority, Japanese Merchant Marine under COMNAVFE and 'gave Japan 85 LSTs and 100 Liberty ships that had been slated for decommissioning,' operated by Japanese crews for the mass repatriation effort; instruments and hatches were remarked with Kanji. SCAPIN-1162 (a primary GHQ memorandum) shows the Q-designation in operational use for ex-US LSTs: 'United States Landing Ships, Tank Q074, Q076, Q091 and Q094' ordered to sail from Sasebo. The program context makes NavSource's Q032 assignment for this hull plausible - though it conflicts with the DANFS return-to-US narrative and remains unresolved.

Program-level corroboration only: documents that decommissioned US LSTs did go to SCAJAP under Q-designations with Japanese crews - it does not name this hull and cannot resolve whether LST-567 specifically served as Q032 or returned to the US as DANFS states. USNI is a reputable professional-journal source; SCAPIN-1162 is a primary SCAP document cited for Q-designation usage, not this hull.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Yard-level occupational-disease litigation at this hull's builder, decided against the claimant: the survivors of Elbert Woolsey, a pipe fitter employed by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron 'in the compartment of ships' from 21 June 1944 to 11 November 1944 (he died 29 October 1945), sought compensation under the Indiana Workmen's Occupational Diseases Act alleging death from 'poisoning from inhaling fumes and gases from galvanized metal being welded.' The Industrial Board majority (two members dissenting) found the decedent 'was not exposed to nor did he contract an occupational disease arising out of and in the course of his employment, but that his death was caused solely by other causes'; the Indiana Court of Appeals affirmed the denial en banc (Royse, J.).

    Limitations
Builder-yard context only, not a hull finding: Woolsey's June-November 1944 employment post-dates this hull's 1 June 1944 delivery, and the alleged agent was galvanized-metal welding fume, not asbestos. Per litigation-stage discipline this is an affirmed judgment AGAINST the claimed exposure - it is documentation that occupational-disease litigation at this yard litigated metal fumes and was resolved on the merits against the claimant, not evidence of toxic exposure aboard any hull. No asbestos content.
