- Documented for this hull: laid down 21 March 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 18 May 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Arthur E. Owen; commissioned 3 June 1944. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater; participated in the Leyte landing (October 1944), the Lingayen Gulf landing (January 1945), and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto (April 1945). Performed occupation duty in the Far East until mid-October 1945. Decommissioned 4 March 1946; struck from the Navy list 20 March 1946. Earned three battle stars for World War II service.

Decommissioned 4 March 1946; struck from the Naval Register 20 March 1946; three battle stars. - Finding
- Deck-log-quoted damage and disposal narrative for this hull: (1) First typhoon off Ulithi 15 September 1945 - winds ~120 knots, barometer off-scale; deck log for 16 September records loss of both bow doors, punctured/flooded void tanks (A-401-V, A-402-V, A-301-V, A-302-V) and widespread compartment flooding, bow-door hydraulics and anchor winch submerged. (2) Typhoon Louise, moored at Buckner Bay, Okinawa, 9 October 1945 - winds ~109 knots, barometer 28.53; mooring cables parted, bow and stern anchors lost, ship on the reef three times, battered by Liberty ship SS Richard S. Oglesby; crew abandoned ship and boarded Oglesby; wind shift carried the unmanned LST-568 across the bay; found 10 October on the reef near China Saki Point with starboard frames 12-35 sprung and bent, plating pierced, messing-compartment seams opened, starboard boat and davit demolished, gun tubs 29/45/47 demolished, fuel tank A-420-F apparently punctured, ground tackle lost, rudders believed inoperable. Pulled off the reef by LST-693 on 13 October 1945; towed to the Philippines 18-23 October. Orders received 22 January 1946 to strip, decommission, and sink. Deck-log entries for 4 March 1946 record the decommissioning (1400 commission pendant hauled down; personnel transferred; LT LaFon last off). Sunk by internal explosive devices 7 March 1946 east of Samar in 4,000 fathoms; struck 20 March 1946; three battle stars.

- Limitations
- Participant-authored history hosted on NavSource - the verbatim deck-log quotations and its congruence with the official CINCPAC damage table (LST 568 refloated 10/13/45) make it high-value, but it is not itself an official document. Minor defect: gives launch as 15 May 1944 (DANFS/NavSource say 18 May; BuShips roster says 17 May). Contains no asbestos content; establishes typhoon-wreck causation for the disposal, not materials.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Official fleet-level documentation naming this hull: CINCPAC Appendix III typhoon-damage table lists 'LST 568 - Refloated 10/13/45' among the Okinawa casualties. The annex narrative documents the storm: Typhoon Louise veered toward Okinawa on 8-9 October 1945, caught the fleet in Buckner Bay (ships 'ranging in size from Victory ships to LCV(P)s'), winds to 100+ knots steady with gusts to 120, 30-35 foot seas, hundreds of ships blown ashore in masses of wreckage; casualties across the storm were 36 dead and 47 missing with ~100 serious injuries. Appendix III logs dozens of vessels grounded/sunk/damaged across types (LST 534 sunk; LSTs 823 and 826 beyond economical salvage; etc.).

- Era/design inference for this diesel-powered LST: the plant was two GM 12-567A diesels (900 hp each, 1,700 shp total, Falk reduction gears, twin rudders) with three diesel-drive 100-kW ship's-service generators - NO boilers, so the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a ship of this type and build window were diesel-exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, valve packing, electrical insulation, and winch/crane brake linings - in a ship built to emergency wartime specifications during the period when the federal government had reserved asbestos supply for shipbuilding.

- Finding
- The ship's deck logs exist as a matter of record: a serving officer quotes verbatim damage entries for both typhoons and the decommissioning day's log (1400 pendant hauled down; personnel transfers; last CO off). NARA holds unclassified USN deck logs for 1941-1983 at the Modern Military Branch, College Park, with the 1941-1959 series digitization ongoing; small/unnamed vessels used abbreviated 'patrol logs' in WWII. The LST-568 logs are the primary surviving document trail for this hull - damage surveys, stripping detail, and the sinking would all be logged.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-568 was found in the public sources searched. NOTE on disposal pathway: the hull was stripped and sunk intact in ~4,000 fathoms east of Samar on 7 March 1946 - there is no scrapping-yard, museum, or modern abatement track where a hazmat record could have been generated; the only plausible written asbestos record for this hull would be inside undigitized wartime construction/salvage files (RG 19 BuShips; RG 24 logs). CourtListener: three authenticated queries returned verified zeros - 'LST-568' opinions, 'LST 568' opinions, 'LST-568' dockets (sl-09); one spaced-variant docket search hit fleet pacing and is open (sl-09b, not a negative result).
