    Finding
The archived official DANFS entry identifies this hull as laid down 31 October 1943 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Dravo Corp.; launched 11 December 1943; commissioned 22 January 1944; assigned to the European theater; and a Normandy-invasion participant from 6 to 25 June 1944. It states that LST-58 was decommissioned 7 November 1945, struck from the Navy list 28 November 1945, sold to Northern Metals Co. of Philadelphia on 30 November 1947, and subsequently scrapped. The entry credits one World War II battle star.

    Limitations
This archived official history establishes milestones and service, not asbestos content, products, quantities, worker exposure, or legal eligibility. The live NHHC URL returned HTTP 404 when checked; this is therefore labeled and cited as an archived copy.

    Finding
The Bureau of Ships' 1945 Ships' Data design table places LST-58 in the LST1-490 group. That row specifies a 328-foot overall length, two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines, two propellers, 1,700 shaft horsepower, a Falk reduction gear, and three 100-kW diesel-driven 230-V DC ship-service generators. No boilers are listed for this group.

LST1-490 design group; LST-58 construction and operating personnel
    Limitations
The official design table applies to the LST1-490 group, not a hull-specific material inventory. It establishes diesel rather than boiler propulsion only; it does not establish the presence, absence, type, or quantity of asbestos aboard LST-58.

    Finding
GAO's 1979 Navy asbestos-program review says it examined the use of asbestos in Navy ships and reports that the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation damaged or required to be removed for necessary repairs; the policy was modified in 1979 for selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

Navy shipyard workers and Navy asbestos program reviewed by GAO
    Limitations
This is Navy-wide program context from 1979, with fieldwork at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards; it neither names LST-58 nor establishes asbestos aboard it. The live GAO product page returned HTTP 403 to automated access, so the verified archived official product page is cited and labeled as archived.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the public official sources searched: no material schedule, insulation survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos opinion was found. Authenticated CourtListener opinion queries for exact name "USS LST-58" and exact hull number "LST-58" each returned zero results. The required CourtListener exact-name and exact-hull docket queries were not completed because the authenticated fleet pacing helper reported that the shared request budget was momentarily spent.

    Limitations
A partial search and absence of located public records do not prove asbestos was absent or that no litigation exists. CourtListener coverage excludes many state filings, settlements, and non-digitized materials; the uncompleted authenticated docket queries are explicitly carried as a gap rather than represented as zero results.
