- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- LST-580 was laid down 17 May 1944 at Evansville, Indiana, by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 26 June 1944; and commissioned 25 July 1944. During World War II she was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the Lingayen Gulf landings in January 1945 and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in April 1945. She performed occupation duty in the Far East until late January 1946, was decommissioned 29 January 1946, struck from the Navy list 31 October 1947, and sold for scrapping to Consolidated Builders, Inc., Seattle, Washington, 2 May 1948. DANFS records two World War II battle stars.

- Ship's company and embarked personnel; no complement is stated in this DANFS entry
- Limitations
- This is an archived copy of an official NHHC/DANFS page because the live NHHC URL returned 404 at research time. It contains no asbestos, insulation, product, survey, abatement, or exposure information.

[3]National Park Service, ‘Places of WWII History in Evansville, IN’ [nps]
- Locator
- Evansville Shipyard section
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The National Park Service records that Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company began LST production at the Navy-built Evansville Shipyard in 1942; LSTs delivered military vehicles, troops, and supplies directly ashore. This identifies the wartime production setting of LST-580’s documented builder and place of construction.

- PubMed abstract, ‘Abstract’ section
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical research states that asbestos was used extensively as fireproofing and insulating material in shipbuilding in the 1940s, when World War II industrial expansion sharply increased asbestos use. LST-580 was constructed in that era, from May to July 1944.

- Study period
- 1940s shipbuilding era; applied here only to 1944 construction context
- Population
- WWII-era shipbuilding workers and other workers exposed in the 1940s and postwar period; not a hull-specific population
- Limitations
- Era-level shipbuilding evidence only. The study does not name LST-580, Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., the LST-542 class, or any product aboard this hull; it cannot establish that asbestos was installed aboard LST-580 or that any person was exposed.

[5]CourtListener authenticated API v4 search, opinion type, exact query ‘USS LST-580’ [court_record]
- Locator
- Authenticated helper output cl-uss-lst580-op.json: {count: 0, results: []}
- Finding type

- Finding
- The authenticated CourtListener API v4 exact-name opinion search for ‘USS LST-580’ returned zero results.

- Study period
- 2026-10-02
- Limitations
- A zero-result exact-name opinion search is a limited search result, not proof that no litigation exists and not evidence of no asbestos aboard. The required hull-number opinion search and both exact-name and hull-number docket searches were not completed because the fleet-wide helper reported its shared paced budget was momentarily spent; those gaps remain pending and are recorded in the search ledger.

- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA is the prospective source for hull-specific deck logs, war diaries, construction and disposal records for LST-580.
