- DANFS entry title and full narrative
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC DANFS states that LST-587 was laid down on 1944-06-02 at Evansville, Indiana, by Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co.; launched 1944-07-19; and commissioned 1944-08-18. It served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater at Iwo Jima in February 1945 and Okinawa from April through June 1945, then performed occupation duty and served in China until early February 1946. It transferred to MSTS on 1952-03-31 as USNS LST-587, was struck on 1972-06-01, and was sold for scrapping on 1973-09-17.

- Limitations
- DANFS establishes the ship's identity and service chronology but does not document asbestos, specific materials, individual exposure, abatement, quantities, or present-day condition. The page was verified through live web search; direct page retrieval returned a transient 502 during research.

[3]NavSource Online, USNS T-LST-587 / ex USS LST-587 [other_primary]
- Locator
- Page lines/sections headed 'LST-542 Class Tank Landing Ship', service chronology, and 'Specifications'
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The live NavSource page identifies this hull as the LST-542 class and corroborates the 1944 construction and commission dates, Iwo Jima and Okinawa operations, February 1946 decommissioning/SCAJAP redesignation Q042, 1952 MSTS transfer, 1972 strike, 1973 MARAD transfer and scrapping sale, and two World War II battle stars. Its specifications list 328 feet overall length, 50-foot beam, 13 officers and 104 enlisted in the ship's complement, 16 officers and 147 enlisted troop accommodations, and two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines with 1,700 shaft horsepower.

- Limitations
- NavSource is an official-archive-style naval history/photo archive and is used here for corroboration and specifications; it does not establish asbestos content, an ACM survey, abatement, exposure, or what remained at scrapping.

- Locator
- GAO product page highlights and linked report
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reported that the Navy reviewed asbestos use in ships and ship repair, and that its 1975 policy generally removed and replaced damaged insulation or insulation removed for repairs; the policy was modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas. The report is program-level context for Navy ship maintenance during LST-587's service era.

- Population
- Navy shipyard and ship-maintenance workers
- Limitations
- GAO did not identify LST-587, its class, a specific work package, or a material quantity in the cited product-page summary. This row cannot establish asbestos aboard this hull or exposure to its crew or workers.

[5]U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Guidance: Best Management Practices for Preparing Vessels Intended to Create Artificial Reefs (2004) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Guidance sections 'Where is asbestos found on a ship?' and 'Ship Interior and Living Spaces'
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- EPA guidance describes asbestos as potentially occurring in vessel thermal insulation and lagging, bulkhead fireproofing, deck underlay/floor tile, hatch gaskets, packing, cable materials, and related shipboard products, and recommends identifying and sampling materials before vessel preparation. These are general vessel-preparation categories, not findings about LST-587.

- 2004 guidance; historical vessel materials context
- Population
- Vessel-preparation and ship-recycling workers
- Limitations
- The guidance does not name LST-587, does not identify its construction materials, and does not establish that any listed product was asbestos-containing on this hull. It is included only to define the research categories and the need for a hull survey.

[6]CourtListener authenticated exact-name and hull-number litigation sweep [court_record]
- Locator
- Authenticated helper invocation logged in BATCH-7102-REPORT.md; helper stand-down message
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying CourtListener result was confirmed during this session for exact-name query 'USS LST-587' or hull-number query 'LST-587'. The authenticated helper reported a temporary fleet-wide pacing stand-down before returning results; the sweep is therefore incomplete rather than a definitive no-result finding.

- Population
- CourtListener indexed opinions and dockets
- Limitations
- This is an access-gap negative finding, not proof that no litigation exists. CourtListener work stopped when the authenticated helper reported the fleet-wide request budget was momentarily spent; no anonymous, raw API, v3, or direct request was used.
