- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 6 October 1943 at Seneca, Ill., by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 28 February 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Helena Wilson Carpender; commissioned 20 March 1944; performed occupation duty in the Far East until late February 1946; transferred 31 March 1952 to the Military Sea Transportation Service and operated as USNS LST-600 until struck from the Navy list 1 June 1969.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents identity, build, and service/disposition chain only - no materials or asbestos content. The DANFS text omits the decommissioning date, the SCAJAP Q074 period, Vietnam service, and the December 1968 loss event. - NavSource chronology for this hull: commissioned 20 March 1944 under Lt. James M. Ray, USN; WWII assignment Asiatic-Pacific Theater, LST Flotilla 37 (Capt. Riley), Group 111 (Lt. Cmdr. A.H. Tutt), Division 221; awards American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, WWII Victory, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp) for periods 1-7 October 1945 and 17 October 1945-27 February 1946; decommissioned 26 February 1946; laid up in reserve; assigned to MSTS 31 March 1952 and placed in-service as USNS T-LST-600; loaned to COMNAVFE Shipping Control Authority (SCAJAP) as Q074 (date unknown); returned to MSC (date unknown); ran aground 23 December 1968; out of service and struck 1 June 1969; fate unknown. Photo record documents Q074 repatriation service at Miyako ('Miyuko') island, southern Ryukyus, c. August-December 1946, and T-LST-600 beached in South Vietnam c. early 1968. Commanding officers listed through decommissioning.

- WWII crew (design complement 13 officers / 104 enlisted plus embarked troops); MSTS/MSC civil-service and contract crews; SCAJAP Japanese crews
- Limitations
- NavSource is a curated photo-archive compilation, not a government source, but it is the canonical per-hull reference and is consistent with DANFS where they overlap. Two internal conflicts: (a) the SCAJAP loan is placed after the March 1952 MSTS assignment in the text chronology, yet the site's own photo caption dates Q074 repatriation service to August-December 1946 - ordering unresolved; (b) grounding dated 23 December 1968 vs the MSTS command history's 22 December - one-day conflict. Specifications block matches BuShips SDB 1945 figures. Page verified live at navsource.net (the .org domain is dead); site serves HTTP 406 to non-browser agents but loads normally.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- DoD-commissioned records review quotes the MSTS command history for 1969 (Okinawa activities), obtained from NHHC Navy Yard: USNS LST-600 went aground at Kanno Se Reef near Naha on 22 December 1968 and was refloated on 17 January 1969; salvage ship USS Current arrived Christmas Day, rigged beach gear, and with LCM-6 landing craft off-loaded cargo to lighten the ship; remaining fuel off-loaded New Year's Day 1969. Identifies the vessel as an 'Amphibious Tank Landing Ship' of the Military Sea Transportation Service, in-service as USNS T-LST-600.

- Limitations
- Establishes the loss event's location, dates, and salvage sequence from a Navy command history as quoted inside a DoD report - the command history itself was not independently retrieved (archival lead). One-day conflict with NavSource's 23 December grounding date. The 'storm' loss characterization comes only from NavalCoverMuseum, not this source. Does not document post-refloat disposal.

[5]Young AL, Young KL, Investigations into Allegations of Herbicide Orange on Okinawa, Japan (January 2013, DoD-commissioned), Allegation Number 6 assessment [other_primary]
- Locator
- Report pp. 18-20, Allegation 6 (assessment + investigation)
- Finding type
- environmental_record
- Finding
- A circulating toxic-cargo allegation about this hull was investigated and not validated: veterans alleged that drums of Agent Orange were recovered from an American cargo ship stranded on a reef near Naha. The DoD review identified the vessel as T-LST-600, examined the MSTS 1969 command histories of LST-600 and USS Current plus National Archives holdings, and found 'No mentions of drums, Agent Orange, or the description of other cargo' - concluding an LST would have been an inappropriate vessel for the alleged tactical-herbicide transport.

- Population
- Okinawa-based veterans (allegation claimants)
- Limitations
- Negative finding concerns Herbicide Orange, not asbestos - it has no bearing on asbestos aboard this hull. It is carried because an exposure allegation about this specific hull exists in the veteran-claims record and was officially investigated to a negative conclusion; it also anchors the loss narrative. The review's charter was Agent Orange; it does not address insulation materials.

[6]Bureau of Ships, Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. II, NAVSHIPS 250-011 (1945) - LST design table and roster (shipscribe.com scan of the official BuShips document) [other_primary]
- Locator
- SDB 1945 v2, LST design-characteristics table (LST542-931 row) + roster line 'LST600'
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Official BuShips data places this hull in design group LST542-931: 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam, 2,366/4,080 t, 11.6 kt, 13 officers/106 enlisted; roster lists 'LST600' built by 'Chicago B. & I. Co., Seneca, Ill.' The class is diesel-powered (two GM 12-567A engines per NavSource specifications) with no boilers, so asbestos-relevant scope is the era diesel-ship set - engine/exhaust lagging, engine-room insulation, gaskets and packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation - not boiler/turbine lagging.

- Limitations
- Design-group documentation, not a hull material record: the SDB table contains no insulation or asbestos data. Asbestos application wording is era-consistent inference layered on the documented diesel plant; establishes no quantities and no individual exposure. - Locator
- Yard page description block + LST 600 table row
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Yard-level record for this hull's builder: the Navy requisitioned the Chicago Bridge & Iron facility at Seneca, IL in 1942, invested $6M in improvements, and operated it as the 'Prairie Shipyard' on a 200-acre site; the yard's hull table lists LST 600 (keel 10/6/43, launched 2/28/44, delivered 3/20/44 - 145 days on ways, 21 in water, 'To MSTS 1952, wrecked 1968') among the LSTs and conversions built there 1942-45.

- LST 600 wiki page, 'Ship Name and Designation History' section
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Collector-museum designation history lists this hull's identities in chronological order: USS LST-600 (commissioned March 20 1944 - decommissioned February 1946); Q-074 (SCAJAP); USNS T-LST-600 (placed in service March 31 1952, 'LOST (Storm) December 23 1968', struck June 1 1969). The Q-074 ordering between the USS and USNS periods corroborates the 1946 photo-caption dating for the SCAJAP period.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing 1975 policy removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or when required for repairs, modified in 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - meaning original-era insulation typically remained aboard in-service ships for decades unless a yard period disturbed it. This hull remained on the naval register in MSC service until 1 June 1969, inside the un-remediated-era window.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or docketed asbestos case naming LST-600 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger).
