    Finding
DANFS records that LST-610 was laid down 16 December 1943 at Seneca, Illinois, by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 19 April 1944, sponsored by Mrs. Patrick J. O'Herron; and commissioned 15 May 1944. It assigns the ship to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and lists the southern Palau Islands operation (September-October 1944), Leyte landings (October-November 1944), and Lingayen Gulf landing (January 1945). After occupation duty in the Far East and China service until mid-June 1946, it was decommissioned 28 June 1946, transferred to the U.S. Military Government of Okinawa 18 September 1946, and struck from the Navy list 23 December 1947. DANFS credits three World War II battle stars.

Chicago Bridge & Iron construction trades (1943-44); Navy crew (1944-46); personnel involved in transfer (1946)
    Limitations
Ship-specific service history only. It does not identify asbestos-containing material, repairs, removal, exposure, complement, or the vessel's disposition after striking. The live NHHC page was unavailable; this is explicitly an archived Wayback capture, verified live on 2026-10-02.

    Finding
GAO reported that, according to Navy officials in 1979, all Navy ships contained some asbestos in components including clutches and electric cables, and that thermal insulation had been the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships. GAO also reported the Navy's 1975 policy to replace damaged or repair-disturbed asbestos insulation with nonasbestos material, later expanded selectively in high-maintenance areas.

    Population
Navy ships and Navy shipyard workers (fleet-level context)
    Limitations
Navy-wide 1979 context, not a ship-specific survey or a record for this LST. LST-610 was transferred in 1946 and struck in 1947, so the report cannot establish what materials were installed, remained, or were removed aboard this hull; it does not establish exposure, causation, quantity, manufacturer, or legal eligibility.

    Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the public sources searched: no asbestos survey, abatement record, material list, museum or agency hazmat disclosure, or qualifying CourtListener litigation naming USS LST-610 / LST-610. The authenticated CourtListener opinion search for the exact vessel name "USS LST-610" returned zero results; the remaining required hull-number and docket queries are recorded in the search ledger as pending fleet-limiter completion rather than represented as negative results.

    Limitations
A public-record search negative does not prove that asbestos was absent aboard the vessel and does not establish or defeat exposure, causation, injury, or legal eligibility. The CourtListener hull-number opinion search and both docket-corpus searches were initiated through the mandated authenticated helper but had not completed when this record was written; their absence from this finding is intentional.
