- Finding
- NavSource identifies USS LST-617 as an LST-542-class tank landing ship laid down 17 February 1944 at Chicago Bridge and Iron Co., Seneca, Illinois; launched 15 May 1944; and commissioned 1 June 1944 with Lieutenant Howard J. Benward, USN, in command. It records assignment to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and the Leyte, Mindoro, Lingayen Gulf, and Okinawa Gunto operations, followed by Far East occupation service from 2 September through 20 December 1945. It records decommissioning 24 May 1946, striking 3 July 1946, and sale for scrapping 15 April 1948 to Kaiser Co., Inc., Vancouver, Washington; it credits three World War II battle stars.

[3]NavSource Online: Amphibious Photo Archive, USS LST-617 specifications block [other_primary]

- Specifications, complement, troop accommodations, and propulsion blocks
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NavSource reports LST-617 specifications of 328 feet overall length, 50-foot beam, 1,625 tons light displacement, 4,080 tons full-load displacement, 11.6 knots trial speed, 13 officers and 104 enlisted, and troop accommodations for 16 officers and 147 enlisted. It identifies two General Motors 12-567A 900-hp diesel engines, a Falk main reduction gear, three diesel-drive 100-kW 230-volt DC ship-service generators, two propellers producing 1,700 shp, and twin rudders.

- Limitations
- The specification block identifies machinery and accommodations but says nothing about asbestos, insulation, exposure, or present condition. It supports the diesel/no-boiler description only as a ship-design fact.

- Finding
- NavSource captions identify hull-specific archival leads: an image of LST-617 beached on Violet Beach, Leyte, 27 October 1944 citing National Archives Identifier 80662621; an Australian War Memorial image of the ship at Mindoro, 15 December 1944; and a National Archives film frame of LST-617 and LSM-79 in convoy, 24 March 1945, citing National Archives ID 80229 and Local ID 428-NPC-15927.

- Locator
- LST design-group machinery data; class profile ev-lst-1-class-01 and -03
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Class/era inference: the LST-542 design group used diesel propulsion rather than boilers. For a 1944 diesel LST, asbestos-relevant applications may have included diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, engine-room thermal or acoustic insulation, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and winch or windlass brake linings. No source located for this record confirms that any listed application was installed aboard LST-617.

- Limitations
- Class/design and era inference only. The design data establishes diesel machinery, not asbestos content. It does not establish quantity, location, condition, retention, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility for this hull or any individual.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-617-lst617-01 through -12
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the accessible research: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazardous-material disclosure, insulation drawing, material schedule, or museum/registry record naming LST-617 was found. The live NavSource hull page and accessible class/design sources contain no ship-specific asbestos statement.

- Limitations
- Failure to locate a public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. This is an access- and coverage-limited negative finding, not evidence that the hull was asbestos-free and not evidence that any exposure claim is defeated.
