    Finding
LST-62 was laid down on 5 August 1942 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by the Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co.; launched on 23 November 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Michael Zier; and commissioned in the Royal Navy on 3 March 1943. She was returned by the United Kingdom on 10 June 1946, and she was struck from the Navy list on 19 July 1946. On 12 May 1948, she was sold to the Northern Metals Co., Philadelphia, Pa., for scrapping.

Paid off at Falmouth, UK, in early 1946; returned to U.S. Navy custody 10 June 1946 at New York; struck from the Naval Register 19 July 1946; sold for scrapping 12 May 1948 to Northern Metals Co., Philadelphia, PA. Finding
ShipbuildingHistory's JeffBoat production record lists LST 62 delivered 3 March 1943, disposition 'To Britain as LST 62, scrapped 1948.' The companion LST production table gives her construction span as laid 5 August 1942, launched 23 November 1942, delivered 3 March 1943 (110 days on the ways, 100 days fitting out, 210 days total), 'To Britain, scrapped 1947.' Program context from the same table: 1,155 LSTs contracted from 11 private-sector shipyards and 5 Navy yards, 101 cancelled, for a net total of 1,054 completed. Yard context: Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company (JeffBoat) was organized in 1938 by American Barge Line on the former M.A. Sweeney site; in 1942 the Navy condemned the neighboring Howard Shipyard & Dock Company and leased it to JeffBoat for the war; it was a major LST builder with employment peaking at 13,000.

    Limitations
Specialist secondary compilation, not a government source; dates track DANFS where they overlap. Internal inconsistency: the LST table says 'scrapped 1947' while the yard page says 'scrapped 1948' - DANFS sale date of 12 May 1948 carried. Yard employment is yard-level, not hull-specific. No asbestos or materials content.

    Finding
uboat.net's warship record for HMS LST 62 (pennant LST 62, LST Mk 2 class) confirms: built by Jeffersonville Boat and Machine Co.; laid down 5 August 1942; launched 23 November 1942; commissioned 4 March 1943; end service 10 June 1946 (decommissioned and returned to the USN). Wartime commanding officers listed: T/A/Lt.Cdr. Oswald Edgar Brown, RNR (1 Feb 1943 - Sep 1943); T/A/Lt.Cdr. Samuel Rayer, DSC, OBE, RNR (Sep 1943 - 10 Aug 1944); T/A/Lt.Cdr. Joseph Lionel Laity, RNR (10 Aug 1944 - 11 Mar 1946). A documented event places her in convoy MKS 43 (departed Port Said 10 March 1944) among the joining LSTs during her Mediterranean period.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed scholarship documents that WWII-era U.S. shipyards extensively installed asbestos-containing insulation, lagging, and gaskets in naval construction - the era in which this hull was built (1942). For a diesel-powered LST with no boilers, the era-relevant applications concentrate in diesel exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation and cable, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings; the documented 1944 rolling-stock conversion (UK) and the 1948 shipbreaking at Northern Metals, Philadelphia, are the documented disturbance events.

WWII-era shipyard workers (JeffBoat, 1942); wartime crew (Royal Navy); shipbreaking workers (1948) - era context
    Limitations
Era-level scholarship plus class/type inference; the source does not name this hull or class and does not establish that any specific material aboard this ship contained asbestos. No ship-specific product is verified; the diesel plant (no boilers) narrows the exposure-relevant scope relative to steam vessels.

    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or when required for repairs, modified in 1979 toward selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - meaning original-era insulation typically remained in place on active Navy hulls for decades.

Program-level Navy documentation that never governed this hull: she was paid off in early 1946, returned to U.S. custody 10 June 1946, and sold for scrapping 12 May 1948 - decades before either policy existed. Context for the era fleet picture only. Full text not retrieved (gao.gov blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403); content via product-page description, consistent with prior batches.

    Finding type

    Finding
Primary-source tracks for this hull: (1) UK TNA ADM 53 series holds Royal Navy ships' logs - the service record of HM LST-62 (1943-1946) sits there, not in USN deck logs, because she was RN-manned throughout. (2) NARA RG 19 (Bureau of Ships) construction and specification records cover the LST program and JeffBoat contract output; NARA RG 38 WWII war-diaries series contains per-ship LST histories for USN-manned sisters but an RN-manned Lend-Lease hull may not be represented. (3) JeffBoat-site records: the Howard Steamboat Museum (Jeffersonville) maintains collections dedicated to the LSTs built there during WWII; the Howard Ship Yards and Dock Company mss. (84 boxes, Indiana University Lilly Library, InU-Li-VAD6549) cover the predecessor yard through 1967; University of Louisville Photographic Archives holds the Howard Steamboat Museum photograph collection.

    Limitations
Archival lead only - series-level mapping verified; no box-level retrieval performed and no LST-62-specific item located or reviewed. The Howard company papers largely predate the JeffBoat era (firm sold to the Navy in 1941/1942); JeffBoat-era LST construction files at the Howard Steamboat Museum are the closer lead but unsurveyed. Nothing in this row is an asbestos record by nature.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LST-62 / HM LST-62 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches 'LST-62' (368 hits) and 'HMS LST-62' (40 hits) returned name collisions only - unrelated criminal, civil, and insurance matters matching the token - no qualifying or other litigation naming this hull. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm/mesothelioma marketing content (gorilaw.com, mesothelioma.net, mesotheliomahelp.org, navyshipexposure.com listicles) asserting asbestos aboard without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. Expected, in part: an RN-manned hull scrapped in 1948 predates the asbestos-litigation era and federal hazmat-survey regimes, and Royal Navy crew claims (if any) would sit outside US repositories.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-built LST is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and the hull's destruction in 1948 precludes any present-day survey. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. CourtListener docket-level (type=r) coverage incomplete this session due to fleet-wide pacing throttle - logged in search_ledger.
