- Population
- Crew (13 officers, 104 enlisted) and embarked troops (16 officers, 147 enlisted), wartime fits
- Limitations
- NavSource is the accepted per-hull reference for this project but is a compiled secondary source, not a primary document; dates agree with DANFS where they overlap. The diesel propulsion specification documents the absence of a steam plant but contains no asbestos information - no material content aboard this hull is established by this source. Complement figure is single-source (DANFS silent).

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA holds Signal Corps photography of this hull on White Beach, Leyte, 22 October 1944, during the Leyte landings - corroborating the DANFS campaign line and constituting a primary archival lead for hull-specific records (deck logs, war diaries, muster rolls) at NARA.

- Limitations
- A photographic record, not a material or exposure record - contains no asbestos information. The NARA catalog entry was verified live (HTTP 200) 2026-10-03; the deeper archival series (deck logs, SCAJAP records) were not searched this session.

- SDB 1945 v2, 'LANDING SHIP, TANK (LST)' design table (LST542-931 row) and LST construction roster (Chicago B. & I. Co. group)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The BuShips 1945 design table groups LST-542 through LST-931 at 328 ft overall, 316 ft waterline, 50 ft beam, 2,366 tons beaching displacement, 4,080 tons full load, 11.6 knots - the design group containing this hull. The construction roster lists LST-623 in the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., Seneca, Ill. build group, corroborating the DANFS builder line.

- Population
- Construction trades (Seneca, 1944) as class context
- Limitations
- Class/design documentation, not a hull record - the design table describes the LST-542/931 group, not materials aboard this specific hull, and carries no insulation or asbestos content. The scan's OCR text layer misaligns roster date columns; DANFS/NavSource dates were used where they conflict with OCR'd cells. Note: the class-profile's original URL for this document (shipscribe.com/styles/usnaux/sdb/SDB1945v2.pdf) now returns 404; the live copy is at /pubs/SDB1945v2.pdf.

[6]Consolidated era inference - BuShips SDB 1945 v2 machinery data (diesel plant, no boilers) + documented era practice for U.S. naval amphibious-ship construction [other_primary]
- Locator
- Consolidated from ev-uss-lst-623-lst623-04 design data and era construction practice
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era-typical asbestos applications for a 1944-built diesel LST: engine and exhaust thermal insulation/lagging, gaskets and flange packing, valve stem packing, deck coverings, accommodation-space insulation, and electrical insulation. The diesel plant (no boilers, no steam lines) narrows the steam-lagging pathway relative to steam-driven hulls. Wartime U.S. naval construction of this era used asbestos-containing insulation, gasket, and packing materials as standard practice.

- Population
- Construction trades (Seneca, 1944); engine-room crew; repair/overhaul workers (as era inference)
- Limitations
- INFERENCE, not ship-proven: no survey, plan, or material list naming this hull was located. Diesel propulsion reduces but does not eliminate the asbestos-relevant system set. Does not establish quantity, location, present-day presence, exposure of any individual, or legal eligibility.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program and its insulation-removal policies of the 1970s - program-level confirmation that the Navy treated shipboard asbestos insulation as a widespread hazard during the period when this hull was still in U.S. service (MSTS era, to 1971).

- Limitations
- Program-level documentation, not hull- or yard-specific; establishes Navy-wide policy context only, not conditions aboard this hull. Full text not retrieved - gao.gov blocks automated fetch (HTTP 403); content via product-page description, consistent with Batch 01 treatment.

[8]Batch-7143 search ledger (this record): NHHC/DANFS, NavSource, NARA catalog, BuShips SDB 1945 v2 (shipscribe), GAO, NVR, secondary web sweep; CourtListener blocked (fleet daily quota exhausted) [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-623-lst623-01 through sl-uss-lst-623-lst623-08
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or museum/owner documentation naming LST-623 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The CourtListener litigation sweep could not be run - fleet daily quota exhausted with an ~11.6-hour stand-down - so no litigation finding, positive or negative, is asserted.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era construction practice is consistent with retained asbestos-containing materials. The incomplete CourtListener sweep is an open access gap, not a negative result; the litigation picture for this hull is unknown, not clear.
