    Finding
Archived DANFS records that LST-64 was laid down 13 August 1942 at Jeffersonville, Indiana, by Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co.; launched 8 January 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Frank H. Buening; and commissioned in the Royal Navy 2 April 1943. It states that the tank landing ship never saw active service with the United States Navy, was returned by the United Kingdom seriously damaged and beyond economical repair in November 1945, was struck from the Navy list 5 December 1945, and was sold 3 July 1946 to Kinaldo de Haag and subsequently scrapped.

    Limitations
Archived official historical entry, not a live page: the current NHHC successor URL https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/lst-64.html returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-02. The entry contains no asbestos, insulation, hazardous-material, crew-strength, damage-cause, damage-location, or breakup-location information.

Ships' Data 1945 vol. 2, LST1-490 machinery rows
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The official Bureau of Ships machinery table identifies the LST1-490 design group as having two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines rated at 1,700 shp, a Falk reduction gear, and three diesel-driven 100-kW, 230-V DC generators. LST-64 is within the LST1-490 hull-number group. The table lists no boiler plant for that group.

    LST1-490 design-group context
    Limitations
Class/design-group record, not a hull-specific machinery acceptance record and not an asbestos record. It supports diesel/no-boiler platform context only; it does not establish the equipment actually installed, any insulation or asbestos-containing product, material quantity, individual exposure, or causation aboard LST-64.

GAO product page HRD-80-2; direct retrieval HTTP 403
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO's 1979 Navy asbestos-program report is a potential federal context source, but it postdates LST-64's 1945 return and 1946 sale for scrapping and does not identify this hull.

Navy asbestos-program context, not this hull
    Limitations
This is a source-access and temporal-context finding only. The product page returned HTTP 403 to direct retrieval on 2026-10-02 and Firecrawl's shared keyless quota was exhausted; no report text is attributed beyond the title/date. The report is not evidence that asbestos was aboard LST-64, that any material was removed, or that any person was exposed.

  5. [5]Batch-7161 search ledger: archived DANFS; BuShips Ships' Data 1945; current NVR shell; NavSource as secondary corroborative lead; CourtListener authenticated helper exact-name and hull-number request attempts; NARA deck-log Special List 44 and NARA catalog as archival leads [other_primary]

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-64-lst64-01 through -08
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the public sources searched: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, product identification, or qualifying litigation naming USS LST-64 / HM LST-64 was found. CourtListener exact-name and hull-number searches were initiated only through the authenticated fleet helper but the helper imposed a fleet-wide pacing stand-down before results were returned; CourtListener therefore remains an incomplete coverage gap, not a no-result finding.

    2026-10-02
    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not establish absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener opinion and docket result sets were not obtained because the authenticated fleet-wide pacer instructed stand-down; state-court and unindexed records are outside its coverage. No litigation conclusion, exposure conclusion, legal-eligibility conclusion, or material-content conclusion follows from this negative finding.

  6. [6]Archival leads: UK National Archives ADM 53 Royal Navy ships' logs; NARA RG 19 Bureau of Ships LST construction/specification records; Jeffersonville/Howard Steamboat Museum LST collections [other_primary]
    Locator
UK TNA ADM 53; NARA RG 19; Howard Steamboat Museum collections
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Because LST-64 was Royal Navy commissioned and did not see active United States Navy service, UK National Archives ADM 53 ships' logs are the lead for operational records. NARA RG 19 Bureau of Ships records and Jeffersonville-area builder collections are the lead tracks for construction and material documentation.

    Limitations
Series- and repository-level leads only; no box, file, log, contract, drawing, or material schedule for LST-64 was retrieved or reviewed. These leads are not asbestos evidence unless a hull-specific record is located and examined.
