DANFS documents for this hull: laid down 24 July 1944 at Seneca, Ill., by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 19 October 1944, sponsored by Mrs. Sadie M. Eveleigh; commissioned 1 January 1945, Lt. Richard N. Shaw, USNR, in command. 'On 15 September 1945, she was redesignated LSTH-652. The ship performed occupation duty in the Far East until early March 1946. She was decommissioned on 5 March 1946. On 6 March 1952, the ship was redesignated LST-652 and transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service on 31 March 1952 where she operated as USNS LST-652 until struck from the Navy list on 1 May 1961.'

    Limitations
Ship-specific official history only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS entry is unusually thin - no campaign or operation narrative, consistent with the ship's late (1 Jan 1945) commissioning and non-assault employment; the SCAJAP/Q086 period (1946-1952) is not covered by DANFS and is documented only via NavSource; the Indonesian transfer and final fate are not covered by DANFS.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - all dates cross-check cleanly against DANFS and the digitized NARA records. Internal tension on final disposition: the same page states 'Disposed of by Indonesian Navy, 26 January 2011. Final Disposition, fate unknown' yet hosts an Indonesian Navy photo of KRI Teluk Kau in a 7 December 2011 exercise; secondary sources (Wikipedia, citing Antara News) report decommissioning March 2011 and a SINKEX 20 April 2012 - unresolved. Finding
The ship's April 1945 war diary (all 3 pages downloaded and OCR-read this session; legible) documents: moored Pearl Harbor berth T-8 1-4 Apr; underway 4-7 Apr under ComAdComPhibsPac training order with LST Training Group 13.10.13 (OTC in LST-896; Capt. H. S. Covington, ComLSTFlot 35) for Maui-area tactical exercises - simulated landings off Kahoolawe, AA practice (336 + 1414 rds 40mm; 576 + 3657 rds 20mm), night maneuvers; on 6 Apr beaching exercises were cancelled 'after LST 845 had broached and blocked beach,' and the ship's crawler crane broke loose in heavy sea damaging life rafts and deck fittings; moored Navy Yard Pearl Harbor berth B-16/B-17 14-16 Apr loading four 3x12 pontoon barges on the ship's sides; then West Loch berth T-13. On 22 Apr 1945 the diary records: 'commenced loading 160 boxes of assorted medical supplies in accordance with this vessel's designation as a hospital evacuation ship,' with Lieut. K. F. Stefan (MC), USNR reporting as senior medical officer; 23-30 Apr 'three medical corps officers and 31 hospital corpsmen reported aboard for hospital evacuation duty.' The functional hospital-evacuation role thus precedes by ~5 months the formal LST(H)-652 redesignation of 15 Sep 1945 recorded by DANFS.

    Limitations
Primary ship-produced record; OCR extraction clean - the load-bearing quotations ('designation as a hospital evacuation ship'; corpsman counts) were re-verified against the page images. The diary narrates April 1945 only; it does not itemize materials and never says 'asbestos' - the fit-out's material scope is undocumented. It states administrative attachment to LST Group 67 / Flotilla 23, matching the NHHC fleet list.

The hull's muster-roll file unit is digitized and covers 8 November 1944 - 5 March 1946, i.e., from pre-commissioning crew assembly (consistent with the documented Nov-Dec 1944 Chicago war-bond exhibit period) through the 5 March 1946 decommissioning. Sampled pages (forwarding sheet; 'REPORT OF CHANGES of U.S.S. LST 652 UPON COMMISSIONING' alphabetical crew lists; the final decommissioning report of changes dated 5 March 1946 listing officers including Monroe Stewart Fein - matching the NavSource CO table) confirm the roll's coverage and integrity.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The digitized deck-log file (downloaded and read this session) contains USS LST-652's own logbook commencing 0000 Monday 8 May 1961 at Yokosuka, Japan, and ending 1600 Friday 18 May 1961 at Guam, M.I., commanded by LCDR Glenn A. Kirby, USN - a post-strike passage (the ship was struck from the Naval Register 1 May 1961): the 9 May 1961 sheet records her 'moored port side to Berth 8, United States Fleet Activities, Yokosuka Japan ... receiving miscellaneous services from the pier.' The same scan bundles USS LST-657's logbook (LCDR P. A. Lautermilch, USN; commencing 0001 27 May 1961 at Yokosuka, ending 1800 7 June 1961 at Guam) whose title page bears the stamp: 'THIS VESSEL WAS PLACED "IN SERVICE SPECIAL" WHILE ENROUTE FROM YOKOSUKA JAPAN TO GUAM M.I.: HAS SUBSEQUENTLY BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA.' LST-657's entries record mooring to LST-616 in a three-ship nest at Berth 'S,' Apra Harbor, Guam, with 'LST 652 ... THE INBOARD SHIP IN THE NEST' (verbatim from the 6 June 1961 additional-remarks page), and LST-657 placed out of service at 1800 on 6 June 1961 per a COMNAVMARIANAS message - independently placing LST-652 at Apra Harbor, Guam, in June 1961 in the Indonesia-delivery layover nest.

Mixed-scan caveat: pages after the LST-652 title-page block are USS LST-657's logbook, not LST-652's - NARA filed both under the 'LST-652 - May 1961' file-unit title. LST-652's continued US-command operation into May-June 1961 after the 1 May strike reflects the administrative/physical-transfer sequence for MAP delivery; the precise legal transfer date is not stated in the log (secondary sources give 17 June 1961). Era inference for this hull: the LST-542 design group ran a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, 1,700 shp total, Falk reduction gear, twin screws - BuShips design table and this hull's NavSource spec block) with no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway of boiler vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1944 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set - diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and packing, accommodation thermal insulation, deck coverings - and the documented April 1945 fitting into the hospital-evacuation role (war diary, ev-04) added interior rework aboard this hull inside the Navy's asbestos-use era.

The COM LST GR 67 April 1945 diary was pulled (NAID 140006440, 2 images) but the scan is photographically too degraded to read - letterhead only. The MSTS-period deck logs surfaced only for the final delivery window (May-Jun 1961); the 1946-1952 SCAJAP/Q086 period has no located ship-titled file unit.
