- Documented for this hull: laid down 28 January 1944 at Ambridge, Pa., by the American Bridge Co.; launched 13 April 1944; sponsored by Mrs. R. W. Caldwell, Jr.; commissioned 10 May 1944, Lt. John R. Burke in command. 'During World War II, LST-664 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of southern France in August and September 1944. Following the war, she was transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service on 19 April 1955 where she served as USNS LST-664 until struck from the Navy list on 15 June 1973. On 23 October 1973, the ship was sold to Majid Karoon, Khorramshahr, Iran, for scrapping.' Earned one battle star for World War II service.

- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS does not record the 1949 first decommissioning, the 1951 recommissioning, or the second decommissioning date - those come from NavSource (ev-02). Does not describe interwar deployments, specific operations ashore, or materials aboard.

- American Bridge construction trades (1944); wartime complement ~117 (1944-49); recommissioned crew (1951-~1955); MSTS civil-service crew (1955-73); 1973-74 shipbreakers at Khorramshahr
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track DANFS/NVR but the 1949/1951 decommissioning dates and CO roster have no primary source independently located this session. The second decommissioning is explicitly 'date unknown' in this source; NavalCoverMuseum carries it as 19 April 1955 (see gaps). Spec block is class-typical (LST-542 design), not a hull survey. Photo captions are contributor-supplied. No asbestos content.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Documented MSTS-era event for this hull: Mission San Miguel 'ran aground on Maro Reef, Hawaiian Islands, while running at full speed and in ballast' on 8 October 1957; 'When she began to go down by the stern, her crew was taken off by USNS LST-664, despite darkness, 8-foot seas and numerous reefs.' Establishes USNS T-LST-664 operating in the Pacific under MSTS in October 1957 and conducting an at-sea crew rescue.

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 indexes Navy deck-log coverage for LST-664 from 10 May 1944 (commissioning) through 31 December 1945. The index establishes the listed record span; the underlying logs were not retrieved or reviewed.

- Limitations
- An archival index entry, not review of the deck logs themselves. Covers only the commissioning-to-end-1945 span - the 1946-49, 1951-55, and MSTS (1955-73) periods are not represented in this index (later-era logs are held under different series/accession arrangements). Establishes the indexed span only; does not establish operations or asbestos exposure.

[6]Era inference built on: DANFS LST-664 entry (construction era and builder); NavSource spec block (2 x GM 12-567A diesels - no steam plant); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy-wide asbestos-use documentation (see ev-05); LST-1-class profile era-materials pattern (diesel LST applications) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-542-class ship built in 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-insulation era; era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel LST of this type were engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, diesel exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LST-664. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. The BuShips Ships' Data 1945 v2 design-table citation used by the class profile (shipscribe.com scan) returned HTTP 404 this session with no Wayback capture - that class cite could not be re-verified.

- GAO HRD-80-2 product page + full report PDF (gao.gov/assets/hrd-80-2.pdf): summary and 'Navy's Policy on Use of Asbestos' sections
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that 'thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems has been the major application of asbestos' aboard Navy ships and that 'all ships presently in service contain some quantity of asbestos' (1979); the Navy's October 1975 policy removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified January 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas; and 'some ships were delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978.' Fieldwork yards were Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards. This hull's entire construction (1944) and service era (1944-1973) predates the Navy's substitution period.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS/USNS/T-LST-664 was found in the sources searched. CourtListener (authenticated API v4): "LST-664" opinions 0 hits; "LST-664" dockets 0 hits; "USS LST-664" opinions 0 hits; "LST 664" OR "T-LST-664" opinions 0 hits - a negative result, not a blocked search. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no hull-specific marketing claims (generic LST-class asbestos listicles were not returned for this hull number). No NHHC 80-G photograph record naming LST-664 located. No NIOSH asbestos evaluation exists for the builder - the only American Bridge HHE (81-123-856, Shiffler Plant, Pittsburgh) covers a different plant and a galvanizing hazard.
