- DANFS text for this hull, verbatim: 'LST-665 was laid down on 5 February 1944 at Ambridge, Pa., by the American Bridge Co.; launched on 18 April 1944; sponsored by Mrs. L. L. Smith; and commissioned on 12 May 1944. During World War II, LST-665 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of southern France in August and September 1944. She was then assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and took part in the capture and occupation of the southern Palau Islands in September and October 1944. Following the war, LST-665 performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in China until mid-March 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 11 June 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 3 July that same year. On 10 December 1947, the ship was sold to the Salco Iron & Metal Co. for scrapping. LST-665 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

[4]ShipbuildingHistory (Tim Colton), American Bridge Co. yard table and yard history (verified LIVE 2026-10-02) [other_primary]
- Locator
- American Bridge page, yard table LST block, yard-history paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The yard table independently lists 'LST 665 | U.S. Navy | Landing Ship | delivered 12-May-44 | Scrapped 1947'. Yard context from the same page: American Bridge was a U.S. Steel subsidiary; the Navy requisitioned the Ambridge yard in 1942 and invested $9mm in its improvement; the yard sat on the Ohio River at Ambridge, downstream from Pittsburgh, and in addition to LSTs built structural components for 43 aircraft carriers and 81 cargo ships; postwar it returned to inland hopper barges until closing in 1981.

- Reputable secondary yard data (Colton's shipbuildinghistory); corroborates builder and delivery date already in DANFS. Contains no asbestos or material content; 'Scrapped 1947' is consistent with the 10 Dec 1947 sale but does not identify the scrapping site.

- Documents this hull's transit to the Mediterranean: USS LST-665 (Lt. H.L. Jones, USNR) is listed among the LSTs of convoy UGS-46, which departed Hampton Roads 24 June 1944 for the Mediterranean (the convoy record shows Gibraltar/Oran-area routing in July 1944). Consistent with DANFS's placement of the ship in the European theater for the invasion of southern France in August-September 1944.

[6]Era inference built on: this hull's documented diesel propulsion (NavSource spec block: two GM 12-567A 900-hp diesels, 1,700 shp) + GAO-documented Navy asbestos-use era (HRD-80-2) + era-standard diesel-LST construction practice [other_primary]

- NavSource 10/16/160665.htm specifications block; GAO HRD-80-2 product page
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-542-class hull built Feb-May 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel LST of this type and period were engine and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. Her documented plant (two GM 12-567A diesels) carries no boilers or steam system, so the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

[8]Batch-7189 search ledger (this record): DANFS via Wayback; NavSource verified live; ShipbuildingHistory yard table; uboat.net convoy record; HyperWar ONM wartime registry listing; NVR (not covered); NARA catalog; CourtListener opinion + docket indexes; secondary web litigation sweep [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-665-lst665-01 through -13
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LST-665 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener authenticated searches returned zero hits on every index queried - opinion index for "LST-665", "LST 665", and "USS LST-665", and the RECAP docket index for "LST-665" (2026-10-02). The class-level litigation sweep in the LST class profile surfaced only an incidental LST mention in a docketed exhibit, not an exposure record. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing content (asbestos.com amphibious-ships page, gorilaw.com landing-ships page) asserting asbestos aboard LSTs without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 hull inside the documented asbestos era. Zero-hit coverage is limited to the CourtListener opinion and RECAP docket indexes for the listed exact-phrase strings; state-court and unindexed federal dockets are outside coverage. Deck logs (RG 24), American Bridge work packages, and any scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
