- Documented for this hull: 'LST-669 was laid down on 18 March 1944 at Ambridge, Pa., by the American Bridge Co.; launched on 3 May 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Faris Jones; and commissioned on 27 May 1944.' Asiatic-Pacific theater: 'Leyte landings - October 1944' and 'Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto - April through June 1945.' 'Following the war, LST-669 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early March 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 13 August 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 25 September that same year. On 10 May 1948, the ship was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Co., of Bethlehem, Pa., for scrapping.' 'LST-669 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates track DANFS, but the flotilla assignments, occupation-service windows, campaign day-dates, and CO roster have no primary source independently located this session. Spec block is class-typical (LST-542 design), not a hull survey; its 7-officer complement figure differs from the 13-officer class-typical block carried on sibling hull pages (see gaps). Photo captions are contributor-supplied. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- NHHC's official photographic catalog holds image NH 83635 of this hull - USS LST-669 underway (the NavSource caption places it in San Francisco Bay circa 1945-46). A cataloged official photograph establishing the hull's documented existence and appearance in NHHC's permanent collection.

- A photographic record only - establishes the hull's existence, configuration, and a documented image in the official collection. No condition survey, materials, or asbestos content; the San Francisco Bay location/1945-46 dating rests on the NavSource caption, not the NHHC catalog page itself.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 indexes Navy deck-log coverage for LST-669 from 27 May 1944 (commissioning) through 30 June 1945. The index establishes the listed record span; the underlying logs were not retrieved or reviewed.

- 1944-05-27 to 1945-06-30
- Limitations
- An archival index entry, not review of the deck logs themselves. The indexed span ends 30 June 1945 - it covers the ship's commissioned combat period through the end of the Okinawa Gunto operation (18 June 1945), but the occupation-duty and decommissioning period (July 1945-August 1946) is NOT represented in this index; later-era logs are held under different series/accession arrangements. Establishes the indexed span only; does not establish operations or asbestos exposure.

[6]Era inference built on: DANFS LST-669 entry (construction era and builder); NavSource spec block (2 x GM 12-567A diesels - no steam plant); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy-wide asbestos-use documentation (see ev-06); LST-1-class profile era-materials pattern (diesel LST applications) [other_primary]

- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-542-class ship built March-May 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-insulation era; era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel LST of this type were engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, diesel exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LST-669. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. The BuShips Ships' Data 1945 v2 design-table citation used by the class profile (shipscribe.com scan) was not re-verified this session (previously reported 404 by a sibling batch, 2026-10-02).

- GAO HRD-80-2 product page + full report PDF (gao.gov/assets/hrd-80-2.pdf): transmittal-letter summary and 'Navy's Policy on Use of Asbestos' sections
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that 'thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems has been the major application of asbestos' aboard Navy ships; that 'although all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables, most ships delivered in the last several years or now under construction have little or no asbestos as thermal insulation, which was the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships' (1979); that the Navy's October 1975 policy removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified January 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas; and that 'some ships were delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978.' Fieldwork yards were Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards. This hull's entire construction and service era (1944-1946) predates the Navy's substitution period by decades.

- Limitations
- Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. LST-669 is not named in the report. Does not establish materials aboard this hull, individual exposure, quantity, or present-day presence. LST-669 was scrapped 1948 - before the report's 1970s-era policy discussion and decades before any survey regime.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LST-669 was found in the sources searched. CourtListener (authenticated API v4): "LST-669" opinions 0 hits; "LST-669" dockets 0 hits; "USS LST-669" opinions 0 hits; "LST 669" opinions 0 hits - a negative result, not a blocked search (fleet pacing paused retries repeatedly; sweep completed within session). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no hull-specific marketing claims. No NIOSH asbestos evaluation exists for the builder - the only American Bridge HHE (81-123-856, January 1981) covers a different plant (Pittsburgh) and a different hazard (galvanizing), not the Ambridge shipyard and not asbestos.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
