    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestones here match DANFS verbatim and add unit assignments, campaign dates, occupation periods, specs, and a CO roster sourced to Wolfgang Hechler and Ron Reeves. Contains no asbestos content. Award-ribbon display (American, Asiatic-Pacific with 2 stars, WWII Victory, Navy Occupation with Asia clasp, Philippines Presidential Unit Citation, Philippine Liberation) is iconographic; only the two battle stars are corroborated by DANFS.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered LST-542-group tank landing ship built in mid-1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were diesel engine-room and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, thermal/acoustic insulation, and deck coverings. As a diesel plant she carried no boilers or steam propulsion lagging - the boiler/turbine pathway documented for steam warships does not apply, concentrating exposure relevance in the engine room, machinery spaces, and accommodation/deck-covering materials.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's construction (1944) and entire service era (1944-46). The review's fieldwork yards were Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards; its 1975-policy and 1979-modification findings postdate this hull's 1946 decommissioning and 1948 scrapping, which preceded all documented Navy asbestos-management programs.

Navy shipyard workers; asbestos program review
    Limitations
Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. Full text not retrieved this session - content via the GAO product-page Highlights. Notably, LST-712's whole career and scrapping predated the regulatory era this report describes; no asbestos-management policy ever applied to her in service.

    Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LST-712 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener completed this session (authenticated API v4): opinion search 'LST-712' returned 119 hits - the ranked results reviewed are all name collisions (the 'LST-712' token matching docket/statute fragments in unrelated Texas and other state cases); docket search '"LST-712"' returned exactly 1 hit, a Delaware patent case (Qorvo, Inc. v. Akoustis Technologies, Inc., 1:21-cv-01417) where the token matches an exhibit part reference - a name collision, not the ship. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing listicles and veteran-reunion listings - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Deck logs (RG 24, Aug 1944-May 1946), Jeffboat wartime work packages, and the 1948 scrapping-contract record are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
