Documented for this hull: 'laid down on 3 June 1944 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by the Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co.; launched on 11 July 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Barbara A. Lawson; and commissioned on 7 August 1944.' WWII Asiatic-Pacific service: 'Assault and occupation of Iwo Jima - February 1945' and 'Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto - April through June 1945.' Postwar: 'occupation duty in the Far East until mid-February 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 20 June 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 31 July that same year. On 21 May 1948, the ship was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Co., of Bethlehem, Pa., and subsequently scrapped. LST-713 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - milestone dates track DANFS exactly for this hull and the spec block mirrors BuShips data, but it is not a primary registry. The page headers her 'LST-491 Class Tank Landing Ship' while NavSource's own LST-714 page and the BuShips design grouping place hull 713 in the LST-542 group/class - labeling inconsistency documented in ev-07. No asbestos or material content.

    Limitations
Primary operational records - but they are operational diaries, not material or maintenance records: no asbestos, insulation, or material content appears in the pages read. The documented repair period alongside USS Burias (AG-69) at Saipan (17-30 April 1945) and the underway port-engine fuel-line repair (23 January 1945) are the only maintenance-touching entries observed; the diaries do not describe what the repairs entailed. Finding
Era/design inference for a diesel-powered LST-542-group hull built mid-1944: the class carried no boilers, so asbestos-relevant applications aboard a ship of this type and era were GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings - the confined-below-decks environment typical of the type. BuShips SDB-1945 v2 documents the LST-542-group plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, ~1,700 shp, 328 ft oa) that matches this hull's NavSource spec block.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for LST-713. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. The hull was scrapped in 1948, so postwar conversion/abatement pathways that apply to surviving LSTs do not apply here.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS LST-713 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener authenticated API v4 searches returned 0 hits on three of six queries this session - '"LST-713"' on both the opinion (type=o) and RECAP docket (type=r) indexes, and '"LST 713"' type=o; 'LST 713' type=r and the 'USS LST-713' queries were deferred by the fleet pacing limiter and remain pending - logged in search_ledger, not treated as negative. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (gorilaw.com landing-ships page, mesotheliomatreatmentcenters.org 'LST 542' page, asbestos.com/asbestos-ships.com listicles) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. Expected given the hull's short life (scrapped 1948, decades before asbestos litigation volume and before digitized-complaint coverage).

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era/design inference remains the only asbestos frame. Docket coverage is verified-empty for the hyphenated form and the space-variant opinion index ('LST 713' type=r and 'USS LST-713' queries unrun); RG 24 deck logs (if digitized) and any 1948 scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Finding
CORRECTION: NavSource headers the USS LST-713 page 'LST-491 Class Tank Landing Ship' while its own LST-714 page (next hull, same builder) headers 'LST-542 Class Tank Landing Ship'. Hull 713 falls in the BuShips LST-542 design group (SD-1945 v2 grouping LST542-931) and is LST-542-class in the reference literature - the 'LST-491 Class' label on NavSource's LST-713 page is an internal inconsistency, not a variant design attribution.
