NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - dates cross-check cleanly against DANFS and the hull's own action reports (ev-03, ev-04). The CO table dates Van Voast's command from 1 August 1944 - ten days before the documented 11 August commissioning (prospective-CO assignment assumed; variant noted in gaps). Finding
The ship's own action report (downloaded and read this session, all 10 images) documents an anti-aircraft engagement in Leyte Gulf, 27 November 1944: the ship, temporarily attached to Commander LST Flotilla Sixteen, was discharging a cargo of ammunition to AK-95 moored alongside to port when a red alert sent her to modified general quarters ~1030; she got underway and anchored ~1122 in 14 fathoms about 1,200 yards from a floating dry dock (bearings Mantuaca Point 132T, Rasol Island 115T). ~1159 an enemy plane made a dive/skip-bombing run on the dry dock; the report records the ship firing and the belief that several hits were scored before the plane crashed into the floating dry dock, which burned (the ship moved ~1,000 yards farther off fearing the magazines of the destroyer inside might explode). ~1220 a second enemy plane was engaged by nine guns; definite hits observed - two 20mm and a third possibly 40mm - before the plane dove into the water. Ordnance performance 'excellent'; personnel performance 'very good' despite no previous battle experience.

    Finding
The ship's own action report (downloaded and read this session, all 5 images) documents the Zambales-Subic Bay landing: the vessel sailed as one of 45 LSTs of LST Flotilla FOURTEEN (temp.), tactical commander Captain Seay embarked aboard LST-693, within Task Group 78.3 (Rear Admiral Struble, MOUNT McKINLEY) to land and support elements of the Eighth U.S. Army in the San Antonio-Castillejos-San Felipe area and open Subic Bay; the report's force list explicitly includes '714' in the 45-LST roster. Chronology: took position 36 in the LST convoy departing Leyte Gulf 1100 on 25 January 1945; eight unidentified-aircraft general-quarters alerts 26-28 January, no enemy action; arrived off the assault area 0630 29 January, anchored 0807; ordered to beach 1230 30 January - beached on Red Beach heading 092T at flank speed 1302 but grounded amidships 125 yards off, achieved dry beach 2015, discharged Army equipment 2120-0600, retracted 0720 31 January requiring a tug to clear the sand bar (accomplished 0850), anchored 0920 1,000 yards off Red Beach. Embarked at Leyte: 596th Signal Battalion (AW), 2474th Quartermaster Truck Co., Fighter Control Squadron (Hq. Co.) and 507th AAA Gun Battalion - 12 officers and 273 enlisted; cargo a small amount of bulk gasoline, ammunition and rations. No enemy forces encountered; no damage; personnel performance 'excellent.'

Era inference for this hull: the LST-542 design group ran a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, 1,700 shp total, Falk reduction gear, twin screws - BuShips design table and this hull's NavSource spec block) with no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway of boiler vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1944 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set - diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and packing, accommodation thermal insulation, and deck coverings.

GAO documented (full text read): 'according to the Navy, although all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables, most ships delivered in the last several years or now under construction have little or no asbestos as thermal insulation, which was the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships'; 'thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems has been the major application of asbestos'; the Navy's thermal-insulation specification was changed in 1973 to require asbestos-free materials, and ships were still delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978. The 1944 construction and entire service life of this hull precede the substitution era entirely.

    Finding
CORRECTION: a Royal Thai Navy museum ship pennanted 'LST-714' (HTMS Lanta) preserved at Sai Thai, Mueang Krabi District, Thailand, circulates online alongside this hull's number - it is a different hull: ex-USS Stone County (LST-1141), decommissioned and transferred under lease to Thailand 12 March 1970 at Apra, Guam, renamed HTMS Lanta (LST-4), her pennant number changed to LST-714 between 1995 and 1997. Primary archive coverage for this hull is digitized at action-report level: the two ship-titled file units read this session cover the Leyte Gulf AA engagement (27 Nov 1944) and the Zambales landing (25-31 Jan 1945). Regular monthly war-diary file units for the hull were not surfaced (LSTs filed action reports rather than continuous diaries in this series); parent-unit diaries for COM LST GR 64 - the AA report places the ship 'temporarily attached to Commander, LST Flotilla Sixteen' at Leyte - and COM LST FLOT 22 are digitized and are the coverage bridge. WWII deck logs proper for this hull were not located in the digitized deck-log series checked.
