- Documented for this hull: laid down 8 August 1944 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by the Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co.; launched 10 September 1944; sponsored by Miss Sally Willis; commissioned 4 October 1944. 'Following World War II, LST-727 performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in China until mid-February 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 26 July 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 28 August that same year. On 15 June 1948, the ship was sold to Steele Powers for operation.'

- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS gives no WWII combat-area detail for this hull (the Iwo Jima grounding is documented by a different NHHC source - ev-03). The 15 June 1948 sale date conflicts with NavSource's 'sold in 1946' - see gaps.

[4]NHHC, Mud, Muscle, and Miracles: Marine Salvage in the United States Navy (Capt. Charles A. Bartholomew / official NHHC publication) - Iwo Jima salvage section, Zuni passage [other_primary]
- Locator
- Mud, Muscle, and Miracles, 'Iwo Jima and Okinawa' section (book text ~p. 191 per index entry 'LST-727, 191'); index also lists LST-727 at p. 191
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Official Navy salvage history places this hull on the beach at Iwo Jima during the February-March 1945 operation: 'Zuni, operating aggressively, had deliberately grounded herself to assist an LST in landing ammunition. That grounding caused no damage, but a few days later on 23 March 1945, while attempting to haul LST-727 off the beach, Zuni parted her tow line. The broken wire fouled her screw and anchor. She grounded again, breaking her keel and holing herself seriously. She was refloated and towed to Saipan, out of the war, a casualty of the hard, inherently dangerous work of salvage.' - i.e., LST-727 was stranded ('on the beach') at Iwo Jima and the fleet tug USS Zuni (ATF-95) was wrecked attempting to pull her off, 23 March 1945.

- LST-727 crew during Iwo Jima operation (Feb-Mar 1945); USS Zuni (ATF-95) crew
- Limitations
- Documents combat-zone presence (Iwo Jima) and a grounding/salvage event for this hull; says nothing about cargo landed, casualties, or material condition. LST-727's own refloating details are not stated in the passage. No asbestos content. 'She' in the quoted passage refers to Zuni - the casualty was the tug, not this LST.

- Finding
- Two cataloged photographs document this hull's late-war and return-voyage presence: NHHC NH 79099 shows LST-727 in San Francisco Bay with LCT-1385 aboard circa early 1946 (consistent with the end of China service and return to the United States before July 1946 decommissioning); NARA 80-G-K-6051 shows her moored pierside at berth 11, Navy Yard Pearl Harbor, 13-14 August 1945 - i.e., present in Hawaiian waters at war's end.

[6]Era inference built on: NavSource specifications (two GM 12-567A 900hp diesels, Falk reduction gear, twin screws) + LST-1/542 design-series class profile (ship-class data: diesel plant, no boilers) + WWII amphibious-ship construction practice [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-542-group tank landing ship built in 1944 sits inside the Navy's asbestos-use era; era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard an LST of this design were diesel exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings, bulkhead/accommodation insulation, and winch brake linings. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the asbestos-relevant systems are concentrated in machinery spaces, exhaust runs, interior joiner/deck materials, and auxiliary equipment.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, build specification, or work package located for LST-727. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no individual exposure. The four decades of post-Navy commercial refits (tanker/bulk-carrier conversion, then training-ship conversion) are undocumented for material scope.

- Finding type

- Finding

Full text not retrieved (gao.gov blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403, confirmed this session) - content via product-page description. The ship left U.S. custody in 1948, so post-1970s Navy substitution policy does not reach this hull; Canadian commercial-era material changes are undocumented.

[8]Jeffboat, Incorporated v. Director, OWCP (7th Cir., No. 24-2234, decided 2026-06-23) - CourtListener cluster 10879088; Jeffboat CourtListener opinion sweep (139 hits) [court_record]

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- The builder yard (Jeffersonville Boat & Machine, later Jeffboat LLC - the successor-in-place operating name for the Jeffersonville shipyard) is a repeat litigant in Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act occupational-exposure benefits cases: in the most recent, Jeffboat, Inc. v. Director, OWCP (7th Cir. 2026), the court affirmed benefits for a ship painter's occupational lung impairment from workplace irritant exposure (paint fumes, thinners, sandblasting, chemicals - NOT an asbestos claim). Earlier Jeffboat LHWCA/OWCP matters in the sweep include Jeffboat LLC v. OWCP (7th Cir. 2009), Jeffboat, Inc. v. Mann (7th Cir. 1989), Moore v. Director OWCP / Jeffboat intervening (7th Cir. 1987), and the Robertson line (6th Cir. 1981/1983, SCOTUS 1984). The CourtListener 'Jeffboat' opinion sweep returned 139 hits; no asbestos-specific case naming Jeffboat was identified in the returned set, and no case names LST-727.

- Jeffboat shipyard workers (post-WWII era covered by claims)
- Limitations
- Yard-level litigation context only - establishes that occupational-exposure claims at this hull's builder are litigated under LHWCA, NOT that asbestos was present aboard LST-727 or at the yard in 1944. The 2026 case concerns post-WWII employment (claimant worked ~2005-2017), not the WWII build era. Litigation-stage discipline: these are affirmed benefits findings for individual workers; none is an asbestos finding and none names this hull.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or docketed case naming USS LST-727 / LST-727 / any merchant name (Stanolind 56, R.A. McInnis, Fort Lennox) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero opinion and zero docket hits for 'LST-727' and 'USS LST-727', and zero for 'LST 727' with asbestos. The only 'asbestos aboard LST-727' material located is law-firm marketing listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Study period
- 2026-10-03
- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944-built LST retained in commercial and training service for 80+ years plausibly retains era materials where never disturbed, and Canadian refit scope is undocumented. Hull-number-only LSTs are weakly indexed in litigation databases (parties typically plead shipyard, employer, or product names, not hull numbers), so the CourtListener negative is a coverage-limited result. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
