Dravo construction trades (Neville Island, 1944); ship's company and embarked troops (1944-46)
    Limitations
Ship-specific official history only; no asbestos or material content. Decommissioning location not stated; the buyer's 'non-self-propelled operation' language indicates barge conversion rather than scrapping, and the hull's subsequent fate is not documented here.

Primary ship-produced records document this hull's combat service verbatim. 23 Nov 1944, anchored San Pedro Bay, Leyte (Operational Plan 16A-44): fired on a low-wing single-engine enemy plane at 1902; no damage, no casualties. 24 Nov 1944, same anchorage: twin-engine enemy bombers sighted 0743, one passed directly overhead ~0800; fired; no damage, no casualties. 15 Dec 1944 (Serial 114): underway 3 miles off White Beach, Mindoro, under Commander LST Flotilla 16 Movement Order 8-44, with LST-472, LST-619, LST-738, LST-703 in company; an estimated dozen enemy fighters attacked ~0858-0905 - a Tony engaged by this vessel dove at LST-738 which became ablaze; LST-472 was crashed by another fighter and set afire; LST-746 backed full to avoid LST-472 and downed a Zeke that strafed her port side, crashing ~100 yards off. Damage to this hull: shrapnel dents in starboard booby hatch and port side forward, parted port mast support cable, bullet holes in stanchion and canvas of conn. Wounded: S1c James Daniel Harlin, USNR (flesh wound, lower left rib, shrapnel, first plane's attack) and S1c Donald Jude Kratz, USNR (shrapnel fragment imbedded in upper left arm, second plane's attack). Firing personnel included ship's company plus two embarked 40 mm crews of the 202nd AAA Battalion, U.S. Army. Ammunition: 20 mm HEI 1106, 20 mm HET 553, 40 mm 165. 15 Dec 1944 afternoon (Serial 116): beached on White Beach unloading among LSTs 1018, 613, 911, 741, 919, 703; a Tony dropped a bomb between LST-919 and LST-703 at ~1542-44; fired; no damage, no casualties. 8 Jan 1945 (Serial 142): LST convoy position 12, Task Group 78.5, Attack Order 2-44, approx. 15 deg 15 min N / 119 deg 10 min E during the Lingayen approach; a Tony over LST-744 dropped a bomb harmlessly between this vessel and LST-912; a second fighter crash-dived a cargo vessel; no attack made on this vessel; no damage, no casualties. 22 Jan-3 Feb 1945 (Serial 0169): loaded 405 officers and men of HQ & HQ Company XI Corps, 508th AAA Group, and 98th Signal Battalion plus 106 Army vehicles and 64 tons bulk cargo at Catmon Hill Beach, Leyte; beached White Beach, San Antonio Region, Zambales, Luzon 1429-2135 on 29 Jan; retracted and anchored near USS Mount McKinley; returned to Leyte 3 Feb; report records 'Two (2) casualties were received at the assault beach-head. This vessel suffered no casualties.' All reports signed by Commanding Officer D. S. Chase.

    Limitations
Operational combat records, not material records: they establish presence, actions, minor battle damage, and two named wounded personnel on 15 Dec 1944 - they do not name asbestos, itemize materials, or record repair work performed. The minor-damage findings imply wartime repair but no work order was located. OCR extraction was verified against the page images for every load-bearing quote; the 'casualties received at the assault beach-head' line refers to the beachhead force, not the ship, per the report's own contrastive wording. Letterhead 'c/o Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, Calif.' is standard wartime mail routing, not evidence of a San Francisco availability.

Era inference for this hull: the LST-542 design group ran a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, 1,700 shp total, Falk reduction gear, twin screws - BuShips design table and this hull's NavSource spec block) with no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway of boiler vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1944 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set - diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and valve packing, accommodation thermal insulation, and deck coverings - and the hull's documented 15 Dec 1944 shrapnel damage (ev-03) implies repair work aboard inside the Navy's asbestos-use era, though no repair record was located.

    Limitations

Indexed NARA holdings establish that further ship-produced records exist but were not reviewed: two BuPers casualty-report file units for this hull (consistent with the two wounded personnel documented in the 15 Dec 1944 action report), a Maritime Commission correspondence file covering this hull among five LSTs, parent-unit war diaries for the formations she reported through, and deck logs spanning 3 June 1944 - 30 June 1945 per Special List 44. No ship-titled war diary was located in the WWII War Diaries series - the six action reports are the only ship-titled file units in that series.

No asbestos content is expected or claimed from these titles. Deck logs per SL-44 are indexed, not digitized.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or verified litigation naming USS LST-746 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated fleet helper reported the daily quota exhausted (~11.8 h to reset); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm listicle naming this hull.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - construction at a wartime inland yard, five Pacific assault campaigns, and documented 15 Dec 1944 battle damage sit squarely inside the Navy's asbestos-use era. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (quota-blocked, not run). Undigitized casualty reports, deck logs, the MC correspondence file, and any repair work orders are open archival leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

Alfred Arroyo, USN hospital corpsman, surgical team #13 (dates aboard unstated within Nov 1942-Jan 1946)
    Limitations
Vessel-history texture only; not an exposure record and not a casualty record. The newsletter does not date his time aboard within his 1942-46 service, and 'surgical team #13' is an embarked-unit reference, not evidence of a hospital conversion (LST-746 was never redesignated LST(H)). This record makes no exposure claim for Arroyo or any individual.
