Ship-specific official history only; no asbestos or material content. Compressed entry: omits the June 1945 Brunei Bay (Borneo) operation that NavSource's campaign table and the ship's own action report (ev-07) document - the source of the two-vs-three battle-star conflict (see gaps). The November phrasing covers the credited Leyte operation window; her own action report also documents an October assault-phase sortie (ev-03).

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - dates cross-check cleanly against DANFS and the digitized action reports. Three conflicts carried to gaps: battle stars 3 (here) vs 2 (DANFS); Garris rank LTjg (here) vs Lt. (DANFS and his own signed reports); CO-table window ends Garris December 1944 although his signature appears on reports through February 1945 and secondary force lists name him at Brunei Bay in June 1945. The ship's own Leyte invasion action report (all 3 pages OCR-read this session) documents the assault-phase sortie verbatim: underway 0530 on 16 October 1944 in convoy under the OTC in USS Callaway, cruising disposition X-1; two floating mines passed 20 yards to port in Surigao Strait 0030, 22 October; arrived Northern Transport Area off Leyte 0757, 22 October; after Red Beach was held up by shore-battery fire, 'Commander LST Flotilla EIGHT ordered all LSTs to beach on CATAISAN POINT and unload all cargo. At 1102, this vessel beached at CATAISAN POINT and at 1420 commenced unloading cargo'; retracted 1830; underway for Hollandia 1603 on 23 October under Commander LST Group TWENTY-THREE, escorted by USS PC-598, USS PC-1129, and USS Carson City (PF-50). At 2335 on 23 October USS LST-695, 600 yards off her port quarter, 'was observed to have been hit aft by a mine, or by a torpedo' - the sinking ship signaled 'we are sinking; have been torpedoed' and LST-170, LST-986, and PC-598 were detached to assist; a further floating mine was sunk by Carson City gunfire 26 October. 'This vessel had no opportunity to fire.' Routed via CTG 78.6, CTF 78, Commander Seventh Fleet; copy to ComLSTGr3, Flot15.

    Finding
Nine ship-produced AA action reports (all 21 images OCR-read this session) document the hull's air-defense engagements: (a) Leyte Gulf, 12 November 1944, two actions - at 1415 against five or six fighters and dive-bombers making a dive-bombing attack, fifteen guns firing (7 x 40mm, 8 x 20mm), expending '303 rounds of 40mm ammo., 441 rounds of 20mm ammo.' (verified against the displayed page image); at 1815 against one dive-bombing fighter, ~290 rounds 40mm; no hits on ship, no near-miss casualties, no planes confirmed destroyed; (b) 28 December 1944-1 January 1945, six actions during 'an Echelon movement to MINDORO ISLAND' - positions recorded off southwestern Negros, off Panay Island, on and off White Beach Mindoro, and off Bohol, against single planes including a ZEKE over the beach; expenditures including 647 rds 20mm + 120 rds 40mm and 156 rds 40mm + 171 rds 20mm in two of the actions; (c) off Luzon Island, 12 January 1945, against approximately four OSCARs - the form claims one plane shot down 'sure,' consistent with the narrative report's 'receiving many hits from this vessel' before the plane crashed SS Kyle B. Johnson astern (ev-05). All signed by Commanding Officer R.E. Garris (the Leyte forms explicitly 'Lt., USNR'). Distribution copies to Com7thFlt, Com7thPhibFor, ComLSTFlot15, ComLSTGr3.

Ship's company under air attack; embarked troops in the Mindoro echelon (November 1944-January 1945)
    Limitations
Primary ship-produced records; forms are filled from ship's log and officers' recollection per the report's own instructions. Ammunition figures in several fields are hand-entered and OCR-uncertain in detail (the Leyte figures were image-verified); combat claims are the ship's own reporting, not adjudicated results. The 28 December-1 January package places her inside the Mindoro resupply echelon that suffered heavily - the reports record no hits on this hull. No asbestos or material content.

The Lingayen echelon-G3 action report (all 3 pages OCR-read; signed R.E. Garris) documents: rendezvous with Task Group 78.9 from Leyte Gulf 9 January 1945 for the Lingayen reinforcement lift; kamikaze attacks 12 January - a suicide plane crashed an AK amidships at 1255, and in the evening wave 'a single engine plane dove out of the clouds... and attempted a suicide dive on the same AK' while other OSCARs dove toward SS Kyle B. Johnson, 350 yards astern; 'the other continued with his suicide dive and was observed to be receiving many hits from this vessel' before crashing into the merchantman's side - LST-751 fell out of formation at 1851 and stood by Kyle B. Johnson until her fire and damage were under control at 1918. Arrived Area George, Lingayen Gulf, 13 January; held four days ('all LINGAYEN beaches were congested') then beached on CRIMSON Beach at 1555 on 17 January: 'There was a heavy surf encountered on this beach and the water was very shallow. It is believed that damage was done to the starboard screw and possibly the shaft as a result of this beaching. If, upon our return to LEYTE, the divers report so indicate this belief, a separate report on damage done will be submitted.' Unloaded Company B, 863rd Engineers, and Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 263rd Medical Battalion, on 18 January; ammunition expended for the echelon: 387 rounds 40mm and 765 rounds 20mm. 'This vessel suffered no damage as a result of enemy action... no personnel casualties.'

The second-resupply action report (all 3 pages OCR-read; signed R.E. Garris) documents: rendezvous with Task Unit 78.7.4 from Leyte Gulf 28 January 1945, 'with Commander LST Group FORTY-THREE aboard this vessel as Officer-in-Tactical Command' of Section Four, which detached to Biak, New Guinea - beached at the LST jetties 3 February to load the 198th Quartermaster Truck Company, then rejoined the convoy 9 February. At 0910 on 11 February 'USS LST 577 was observed to be hit by a torpedo fired from an enemy submarine. The ship was blown in two at frame #28, and the after part sank immediately. The forward half remained afloat.' LST-751 requested salvage permission; a boarding party led by Lieut.(jg) B. Worton, USNR, Ensign R.A. Carlson, USNR, and Scheer, F.W., CBM, USN, boarded the hulk at 1148, surveyed compartments (starboard list ~25 degrees; several compartments flooded, several dry), rigged a towing bridle using the stern anchor cable to the hulk's founder plate, and took the tow at 1230; the tow was lost at 1335 when the port bridle leg parted. On orders, towing ceased and 'USS ISHERWOOD (DD520)' sank the hulk; photographs of the hulk were forwarded as enclosure (A). Arrived Leyte Gulf 13 February, sailed for Lingayen that afternoon, beached on White Beach 19 February at 1500, discharged, anchored berth B-01. No ammunition expended; 'the only known damage suffered by this unit was the lose of the USS LST 577'; no personnel casualties.

Era inference for this hull: the LST-542 design group ran a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, 900 hp each, 1,700 shp total, single Falk reduction gear, twin screws - BuShips design table and this hull's NavSource spec block) with no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway of boiler vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1944 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set - diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and packing, accommodation thermal insulation, deck coverings. The hull's own records add two material-disturbance contexts: the documented suspected starboard-screw/shaft damage from the 17 January 1945 heavy-surf Crimson Beach beaching (ev-05; repair scope untraced) and the February 1945 boarding/salvage evolution inside the battle-damaged forward hulk of USS LST-577 (ev-06) - events inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era (GAO HRD-80-2).

    Finding
Primary archive coverage for this hull is digitized but nonstandard: no ship-titled monthly war diary was surfaced - the ship-produced corpus is seven file units: four narrative action reports (Leyte invasion, two Lingayen resupply reports, Brunei Bay assault) and three special AA-report units holding nine AA forms (Leyte Gulf, Mindoro echelon, off Luzon) - 34 pages, all OCR-read. Unit-level coverage bridges the gap: COM LST GR 43 war diaries run September 1944 through November 1945 (NAIDs incl. 633381363, 139807429, 139855355, 139901854, 139958818, 139995280, 140065009, 101733141, 101766438, 77489158, 140087908) and COM LST FLOT 15 / COMTASKGROUP 78.1 / TU 78.1.43 hold parallel Brunei-Bay reports (NAIDs 101716080, 140071370, 77514623). The action report itself promises an unfollowed document: a 'separate report on damage done' pending divers' findings on the suspected 17 January 1945 screw/shaft damage (ev-05). The MARAD Vessel History Database (vesselhistory.marad.dot.gov) may hold a 1947 vessel-status card resolving her 'fate unknown' disposal - its search is JS-gated and was not retrievable this session.

    Limitations
Archival-lead row: parent-unit diaries and the damage follow-up report were surfaced but not read in full; WWII deck logs proper for this hull were not located in the digitized program checked; the MARAD status-card lead is unverified. No asbestos content in the catalog metadata or the 34 read pages.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or verified litigation naming USS LST-751 (LST-751) was found in the public sources searched. The word 'asbestos' does not appear in any of the 34 OCR'd pages of her own digitized action reports. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the fleet-shared daily quota exhausted (server-requested stand-down ~11.7 h) and per fleet rule no retry was attempted; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no ship-specific asbestos claim - the only 'LST-751' asbestos-adjacent hits are name collisions (DD-751 USS J. William Ditter; 40 CFR Part 751) and generic law-firm ship-list pages, all excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - construction at a wartime inland yard and a documented beaching-damage event sit squarely inside the Navy's asbestos-use era. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs, the divers' damage follow-up report, and any disposal/breaker records are undigitized or unretrieved leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
