The ship's own action report (downloaded and OCR-read this session, all 4 pages) documents Task Unit 78.3.15 - five divisions (LSTs, merchant ships, LCI(L)s, MTBs, escorts; OTC in 'Destroyer 698') - under repeated kamikaze attack on 29 December 1944 en route to Mindoro (AA action form: 9-50 N, 121-50 E, zone time -9 Item). Verbatim: 'the convoy sustained fifteen to twenty attacks resulting in the destruction of twenty-eight planes, this ship downing one and assisting in two.' Casualties aboard LST-753: 'Two Naval personnel were superficially wounded by shrapnel and one Army passenger killed instantaniously by flying debris from a Merchant Ship. This Army casualty was buried at sea.' Convoy damage as reported: two merchant ships damaged and one lost, 'LST 750 sustained considerable damage due to concussion and flying debris leading to her subsequent scuttling,' one destroyer set afire; attacks 'plainly with suicidal intent,' no bombs or torpedoes sighted by this ship.

The ship's action report (downloaded and OCR-read this session) documents the Lingayen follow-up echelon (G-3): on 12 January 1945 at 1830, LST-753 operating with Task Group 78.9 under Captain L. J. Manes USN aboard USS LST-574, making a follow-up landing at Lingayen Gulf on the western side of Luzon (S-day set as 9 January 1945). LST-753 in Section I, first wave of LSTs, sixth column fifth ship; about fifteen miles west of the Luzon coast near 15-30 N the convoy was attacked 1831-1840 by four enemy planes 'believed to be Tojos and Oscars.' LST-753 on course 000 T at nine knots opened fire with all 40mm and 20mm guns; two planes dove at Liberty ships in III Section, one crashed into an XAK in position 78 setting it afire, the fourth believed shot down by the screen astern. 'U.S.S. LST 753 suffered no damage and had no casualties. Three hundred and forty-two rounds of 20mm ammunition and fifty rounds of 40mm ammunition were expended.'

    Finding
The ship's action report (downloaded and OCR-read this session; scan faded but legible) documents LST-753 on 11 February 1945 on course 300 T at eight knots in formation with LSTs of Task Unit 76.7.5 (Captain L. J. Manes USN) on a resupply run from Aitape, New Guinea, to Lingayen Gulf. At latitude 7-55.6 N, longitude 130-15.0 E, two explosions were heard and LST-577 (position 21) was seen broken in two sections just forward of frame 34; LST-753 (position 23) sheared to port through floating debris and swimming survivors, then starboard. LST-577's after section sank within minutes; the forward section floated several hours. The screen reported a sound contact, depth-charged it, and a large cloud of oil rose; interrogation of witnesses indicated an electric torpedo fired from 255 T, two wakes reported. 'LST 753 suffered no damage and performance of machinery and personnel was considered satisfactory.'

Era inference for this hull: the LST-542 design group ran a diesel plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, 1,700 shp total, Falk reduction gear, twin screws - BuShips design table and this hull's NavSource spec block) with no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway of boiler vessels does not apply. Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1944 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set - diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and packing, accommodation thermal insulation, deck coverings. Unlike sibling LST-790, no yard availability, conversion, or repair period is documented for this hull in the sources located, so no hull-specific rework event can be associated with the inference.

A NIOSH walk-through survey was conducted 30 January 1979 at the Dravo Corporation's Engineering Works Division shipyard, Pittsburgh, PA - the wartime builder of this hull (DANFS: Dravo Corp., Neville Island). The survey evaluated the yard for an industry-wide study of health hazards to painters: 1,200 production personnel, then engaged in barge and towboat design/construction for river transport; personnel records dating to World War I; the authors found the industrial hygiene program needed improvement and recommended the site for the in-depth study.

    Finding
Primary archive coverage for this hull is the five digitized action reports; no monthly ship-titled war diary, casualty report, or digitized deck log surfaced for LST-753 in catalog results (contrast sibling LST-790, which surfaced monthly war-diary file units and a paper-only casualty report). The documented unit-routing (Com LST Flotilla 15 via TG 78.9, TU 76.7.5, TU 78.1.12; Com LSM Flotilla 2 via TU 78.1.15) points to the digitized parent-unit diaries - COM LST GR 44 / COM LST FLOT 15-era files and the CTG/TU forwarding reports - as the coverage bridge for months with no ship-titled document, and to fill the April-July 1945 gap (Balikpapan) and the June 1945-March 1946 occupation/decommissioning period.

    Limitations
Archival-lead row: parent-unit diaries were identified in result sets but not read; whether LST-753 was formally attached to LST Group 44/Flotilla 15 is inferred from her own reports' via-blocks, not confirmed by a unit roster. No NARA deck-log or muster-roll file unit surfaced for this hull.
