    Limitations
Ship-specific official history only; no asbestos or material content, no specifications, no commanding-officer names. The DANFS entry ends at the 1948 disposal. China-service end is stated as 'late March 1946' - NavSource's medal tabulation runs to 27 May 1946 (see gaps).

NavSource page for this hull adds beyond DANFS: LST-542 class; commissioned with LTjg. John J. Karmelich USNR in command; commanding officers LTjg. John J. Karmelich USNR (29 July 1944 - January 1946) and LTjg. Salvetore [sic] Amato USNR (January 1946 - 20 June 1946). Campaign date ranges: Lingayen Gulf landings 8-18 January 1945 (Luzon operation); Mariveles-Corregidor 14-28 February 1945 (Manila Bay-Bicol operation); Mindanao Island landings 17-23 April 1945 (consolidation of the Southern Philippines). Awards ribbon array: China Service Medal (extended); American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (3); World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp); Philippines Presidential Unit Citation; Philippines Liberation Medal (2). Medal-service periods tabulated from early September 1945 to 27 May 1946 (table alignment ambiguous - see limitations). Specification block: 1,625 t light / 4,080 t full / 2,366 t beaching; 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam; 11.6 kt trial; complement 13 officers / 104 enlisted; troops 16 officers / 147 enlisted; 2 LCVP; armament as outfitted varied (ultimate design 2 twin 40 mm, 4 single 40 mm, 12 single 20 mm). Photographic record: launching at American Bridge Co., 6 July 1944 (US National Archives photo 80-G-407455); commissioning crew at Ambridge circa 29 July 1944 (officers named, contributed by a crew officer's family); at anchor circa 1945 (NHHC photo NH 84870); moored in the Whangpoo River, Shanghai, China, 8 January 1946.

American Bridge construction trades (1944); crew (1944-46), incl. named commissioning officers; shipbreakers (1948)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates agree with DANFS on every overlapping point (laid down, launched, commissioned, decommissioned, struck, sale). The medal-period table renders ambiguously in text extraction ('2 to 8 September 1945 to 27 May 1946' across the Occupation and China Service columns); the span early September 1945 - 27 May 1946 is carried and the exact per-medal boundaries are not asserted. China-service end conflicts with DANFS 'late March 1946' (see gaps). Specifications are class-typical display data, not a hull survey. Contains no asbestos content.

Two cataloged official photographs of this hull: NARA 80-G-407455 (launching at Ambridge, 6 July 1944, a US Navy photo in the collections of the US National Archives, credited via NHHC) and NHHC NH 84870 (at anchor, circa 1945). These are archival leads for construction-era and in-service imagery of the hull - physical-presence documentation, not work or material records.

Construction trades and launch-day population (1944); crew (circa 1945)
    Limitations
Archival lead only: the photo identifiers and captions are transcribed from the NavSource page; the NARA catalog (catalog.archives.gov) is JS-rendered and was not independently fetched this session, and the NHHC photo page was not separately resolved. Photographs document the hull's appearance, not materials aboard. No asbestos content.

[5]Era inference built on: NavSource specifications for this hull's class (2 x General Motors 12-567A 900 hp diesels, single Falk main reduction gears, 2 shafts, 1,700 shp - diesel plant, no boilers); LST-1-class class profile (class-f worktree, lst-1-class.class.json: LST-542 design grouping, GM 12-567A engine block, exposure-relevance notes for diesel LSTs); GAO HRD-80-2 program documentation (see ev-05) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered tank landing ship built May-July 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were thermal insulation, engine-room and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, deck coverings, and accommodation insulation. The diesel plant (no boilers, no steam propulsion) narrows the boiler/turbine-lagging pathway characteristic of steam vessels; the exposure-relevant systems are the diesel machinery spaces, exhaust runs, and interior joiner/deck materials.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-754. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Her short service life (1944-46) and 1948 scrapping mean no postwar abatement-era work packages are expected.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944), service life (1944-46), and scrapping era (1948).

Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. Full text not retrieved (gao.gov blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403, re-confirmed 2026-10-03) - content via product-page description, consistent with prior batch usage.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-754 (LST-754) was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated fleet helper returned exit 2 ('DAILY QUOTA EXHAUSTED: server asked to wait 35580s (~9.9h)') on the first attempted query; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative litigation result. The secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying case and no ship-specific 'asbestos aboard' marketing content naming LST-754 at all (generic mesothelioma-law-firm pages only). No standalone Wikipedia article exists for this hull (list entry only).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (blocked by quota, not run). Deck logs (RG 24), American Bridge construction records, and any Bethlehem Steel scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
