Authoritative for identity, construction, operations, and disposal. The DANFS entry is brief: it gives no complement figure, no propulsion detail, and no materials or asbestos information - this row supports no asbestos claim.

    Finding
NavSource records LST-782 as an LST-542-class tank landing ship manned by the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II; commissioned 22 August 1944 with LT. Henry C. Stack, USCGR, in command (listed as commanding officer 8 August 1944 - 14 May 1946); assigned to LST Flotilla Twenty-Five, LST Group Seventy-Five, LST Division One Hundred Fifty. Campaign dates: Iwo Jima operation 19-25 February 1945; Okinawa Gunto operation 1-15 April 1945; occupation service in the Far East 20 September - 15 November 1945. Decommissioned 14 May 1946; struck 5 June 1946; final disposition sold for scrapping 26 September 1947 to Boston Metals Co., Baltimore, MD. Class specifications include propulsion of two General Motors 12-567A 900-hp diesel engines, single Falk main reduction gear, three diesel-drive 100 kW 230V D.C. ship's service generators, two propellers (1,700 shp), twin rudders; class complement 13 officers / 104 enlisted; troop accommodations 16 officers / 147 enlisted. Awards: Combat Action Ribbon (retroactive - Iwo Jima), American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (2), WWII Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp).

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-run photo archive, not an official repository; identity and milestone dates corroborate DANFS exactly, but propulsion and complement figures are LST-542 class-level specifications, not hull-verified values. Commanding-officer start date (8 August 1944) precedes the DANFS commission date (22 August 1944) - a common pre-commissioning detail assignment; not an error but noted. No asbestos or materials content.

    Finding
The official Coast Guard wartime history records LST-782 as Coast Guard-manned and flagship of LST Unit Six (TG 53.3.9) under Commander W. G. Millington, USCG, within Tractor Group CHARLIE (53.3.7) of the Tractor Flotilla (53.3) at Iwo Jima. The ship arrived on station off Iwo Jima at 0755 on 19 February 1945; launched 21 DUKWs; launched LCT-1030 on 20 February; by 1800 on the 20th had unloaded 60% of cargo, 95% of rations, and 30% of ammunition; began taking aboard casualties on the 22nd, then beached and completed unloading, feeding all comers (5,500 cups of coffee and hot food in twelve hours); engines kept turning to hold position on the steep beach; rendezvoused with Task Unit 51.16.3 on the 24th and departed for Guam.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during World War II - the era and program under which this LST-542-class tank landing ship was mass-produced in 1944 - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard naval and merchant-type hulls.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or official materials documentation naming LST-782 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The CourtListener litigation sweep was attempted and blocked - the fleet-shared daily API quota was exhausted at research time (server-directed wait ~7.7 h) - so the absence of a docketed case naming this hull is NOT an established negative; it is an uncompleted search, logged as blocked in the ledger.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - construction at the peak of wartime asbestos use is itself consistent with retained era materials. The hull was scrapped in 1947-48, so no present-day survey record is expected to exist. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
