    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Official DANFS history states that LST-792 was laid down 25 June 1944 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Dravo Corporation; launched 2 September 1944; and commissioned 2 October 1944. It records Asiatic-Pacific service at Iwo Jima in February 1945 and Okinawa Gunto from April through June 1945, Far East occupation duty until late October 1945, decommissioning 29 April 1946, striking 19 July 1946, and sale 31 October 1946 to Suwannee Fruit & Steamship Co. of Jacksonville, Florida. The ship earned two World War II battle stars.

    Population
Dravo construction workers; U.S. Navy and Coast Guard personnel assigned to the vessel
    Limitations
This is a ship-history record, not a materials, asbestos, exposure, or causation record. The canonical URL was live-checked and returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-03; facts are retained only because the official search result returned the same entry text, and the access gap is disclosed.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
National Archives Special List 44, a guide to U.S. Navy deck logs by ship number, indexes LST-792 deck logs for 2 October 1944 through 30 June 1945.

    Limitations
The index establishes logbook coverage, not the contents of the logs. Individual log volumes were not retrieved, and this row does not establish asbestos presence, individual exposure, or service events beyond the indexed date range.

GAO product-page highlights; PDF text at pp. 10-11. Direct PDF URL returned HTTP 403 during live verification; searchable official PDF text was reviewed.
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
GAO documented Navy-wide use and management of asbestos thermal insulation, including a 1975 policy to remove and replace only damaged insulation or insulation removed for repairs and a 1979 policy for selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. The report states that decisions to replace asbestos thermal insulation were made by individual ship or ship class.

    Population
Navy shipyard workers and Navy vessels reviewed by GAO
    Limitations
Navy-wide program evidence published decades after this hull left Navy service. It neither names LST-792 nor identifies its construction materials, products, quantities, condition, removal, or individual exposure; it is class/era context only.

  5. [5]CourtListener authenticated search helper, /Users/charlesfletcher/devin-prompts/cl-auth-search.py, attempted exact-name query "USS LST-792" [other_primary]
    Locator
Exact-name helper output: 'COURTLISTENER PACING: the fleet-wide request budget is momentarily spent ... Do NOT retry in a loop.' Exact-hull helper output later: 'DAILY QUOTA EXHAUSTED' with a 37,931-second (~10.5-hour) wait. Neither request returned search results.
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos litigation result is recorded because the required authenticated CourtListener queries produced no search result: the exact-name request was paced out before execution, and the exact hull-number request received a multi-hour daily-quota reset notice.

  6. [6]Research sweep of NHHC DANFS, National Archives deck-log index, and GAO Navy-asbestos report; NARA Special List 44 [other_primary]
    Locator
Search ledger rows sl-uss-lst-792-lst792-01 through sl-uss-lst-792-lst792-05.
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The reviewed authoritative public sources did not locate a ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, product list, or asbestos litigation record for USS LST-792. NARA's indexed deck logs are a primary archival lead for operational records, but their contents have not been reviewed.

    Accessed
    2026-10-03
    Study period
    2026-10-03
    Limitations
A limited public-source negative finding is not proof that asbestos was absent. CourtListener coverage is incomplete because the required authenticated searches were paced out; no archive boxes or individual deck logs were retrieved.
