- vessel_history
- Finding
- The DANFS entry for LST-804 records that the hull was laid down on 10 September 1944 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by the Jeffersonville Boat and Machine Co.; launched on 27 October 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Carol B. Mann; and commissioned on 22 November 1944, Lt. R. Bull in command. During World War II, LST-804 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto from April through June 1945. Following the war, LST-804 performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in China until early May 1946. She was decommissioned on 24 May 1946 and transferred to the State Department for ultimate disposition. The ship was struck from the Navy list on 3 July 1946. LST-804 earned one battle star for World War II service.

- Finding
- The USS LST-804 page records wartime assignment to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in LST Flotilla Twenty-Three (Capt. W. W. Weeden Jr., USN), LST Group Sixty-Eight (Cdr. G. H. 'Dama' [sic] USN), and LST Division One Hundred Thirty-Five; participation in the Okinawa Gunto operation (assault and occupation, 1 April-30 June 1945); postwar Navy Occupation service for the periods '2 to December 1945' (as printed) and 26 February-24 May 1946 and China Service (extended) for 30 January-17 February 1946 and 26 February-24 May 1946; decommissioning 24 May 1946 at Shanghai, China [page prints 'Chaina'], with transfer to the State Department for ultimate disposition; striking from the Naval Register 3 July 1946; and transfer to the Republic of China by the State Department, date unknown. The page reports the hull was last reported in 1978 in commercial service as Chung 101 under the flag of the People's Republic of China, final disposition unknown. Commanding officers listed: Lt. Ray Bull, USN (22 Nov 1944-26 Oct 1945); Lt. Fred J. Zusy, USNR (26 Oct-24 Nov 1945); Lt.(jg) Anthony Arthur Angelino Jr., USN (24 Nov 1945-24 May 1946). Contributed photographs document the hull beached in China in June 1945 unloading famine-relief supplies (LIFE image by George Silk) and at anchor in the Whangpoo River, Shanghai, 7 February 1946.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation reproducing official-style records, not a primary registry; milestone dates track DANFS. The group-commander name is printed 'Dama' while the contemporaneous NHHC fleet organization prints 'Dana' (see ev-03). The post-1946 chain (Republic of China transfer date; 1978 Chung 101 report) is date-unknown and rests on this secondary record plus uboat.net corroboration; the PRC-service claim is unverified at primary level. Page contains no asbestos or material content.

- Finding
- The official NHHC United States Pacific Fleet Organization for 1 May 1945 places LST 804 in LST Flotilla Twenty-Three (Capt. W. W. Weeden Jr.), LST Group 68 (Comdr. G. H. Dana, USN-Ret.), LST Division 135, alongside LSTs 774, 822, 836, 837, and 891; the hull's own command-officer cell is blank in that table. This contemporaneous administrative record corroborates the ship's wartime formation assignment as of 1 May 1945.

- Limitations
- Administrative assignment as of one date (1 May 1945); it does not document materials, maintenance work, exposure, or asbestos. Archived capture cited because the live page returned 404 at research time. A firecrawl search snippet appeared to show LST 804 under 'LST GROUP 63'; the captured page body unambiguously places it in Flotilla 23 / Group 68 / Division 135 - the snippet was not trusted.

- Finding
- NARA Special List No. 44 lists LST-804 with Navy deck-log coverage from 22 November 1944 through 30 June 1945 (two duplicated rows), providing a primary archival lead for the ship's commissioning and wartime record.

- Limitations
- The index confirms logbook coverage dates only. The underlying logs were not retrieved or read, so no material or exposure finding is made. Coverage ends 30 June 1945 while the ship remained in service to 24 May 1946 - later logs are not represented in this index and their location is an open lead.

- Finding
- Era context only: the 1946 U.S. Public Health Service survey is a government study of pipe-covering operations in naval-vessel construction, and its title and indexing document the wartime naval construction setting in which asbestos-containing pipe-covering work occurred. Applied cautiously to LST-804, a 1944 wartime Navy construction, plausible era applications for a diesel LST include pipe and machinery insulation, diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, and winch or windlass friction materials.

- Class/era context, not a hull-specific material finding. The source does not name LST-804, identify installed products aboard it, establish quantity or condition, or prove individual exposure or causation. The PubMed HTML page was behind a reCAPTCHA challenge at research time; bibliographic details (authors, title, journal, volume, pages, January 1946 date) were verified through the NCBI E-utilities API instead.

- GAO's Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure (HRD-80-2, 18 October 1979, requested by Representatives Glenn M. Anderson and Jerry M. Patterson; covering the Department of Defense and Office of Personnel Management) is confirmed by the index appendix of the GAO Annual Report 1980. It is relevant as Navy-wide era context for shipboard asbestos management, not as evidence about LST-804.

- search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-804-lst804-01 through -12
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the authoritative sources reached this session: the DANFS entry, NavSource page, NHHC 1945 fleet organization, NARA logbook index, uboat.net profile, and reviewed era-context sources contain no hull-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or product identification. A firecrawl live-web sweep for 'LST-804 asbestos' surfaced only law-firm marketing listicles (mesotheliomahope.com, swmwlaw.com, simmonsfirm.com, asbestos.com, mesotheliomaveterans.org) - excluded by source policy. CourtListener litigation coverage is an access gap rather than a negative result because the authenticated helper reported the fleet's daily quota exhausted (~10.5-hour wait) before returning results.

- A negative finding about records located is not proof that asbestos was absent. CourtListener was not completed (daily quota, multi-hour wait = spent, not a burst pause), underlying NARA logs were not read, and no conclusion about exposure, causation, legal eligibility, or remaining material is supported.
