Documented for this hull: laid down 8 August 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 21 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Leonard S. Shroyer; commissioned 13 October 1944. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater; participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto from April through June 1945. Performed occupation duty in the Far East until early February 1946; returned to the United States; decommissioned 18 July 1946; struck from the Navy list 28 August 1946; on 14 October 1947 sold (live page prints 'said to' - an OCR-type error, see report) to William E. Skinner, of New York City, N.Y., for scrapping. Earned one battle star for World War II service.

NavSource record for this hull: LST-542-class tank landing ship; laid down 8 August 1944 at Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., Evansville, IN; launched 21 September 1944; commissioned USS LST-810 13 October 1944, LT. Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp) periods: 30 September-10 October 1945, 1-9 November 1945, 28 December 1945-4 February 1946. Decommissioned 18 July 1946; struck from the Naval Register 28 August 1946; final disposition sold for scrapping 14 October 1947 to William E. Skinner, New York City. One battle star. Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates here agree with DANFS exactly. The specification block is LST-542 class-standard, not a hull-measured record. Contains no asbestos content. Finding
On 5 April 1945 (Thursday), off Okinawa, LST-810 was damaged in a collision with tank landing ship LST-273 at 26 deg 25 min N, 127 deg 42 min E - one of several same-day collision casualties in the Okinawa area recorded by the official chronology during the assault-and-occupation period in which DANFS places this hull.

    Crews of LST-810 and LST-273 (April 1945)
    Limitations
Damage event only: the chronology records the collision and position but not extent of damage, casualties, or repair history. Transcription of the official Navy chronology (HyperWar), not the printed volume; the entry names both hulls. No asbestos content - included because battle/collision damage and subsequent repair are the kind of material-disturbance events a hull record should note, not as an exposure finding.

    Finding
An NHHC photograph (NH 79563, via the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum) shows LST-810 with LCT(6)-803 loaded as deck cargo, underway in San Francisco Bay circa 1946 - physical-presence documentation of the hull's postwar return configuration. A privately contributed voyage-record image covers 6 October 1944 to 29 November 1945 (commissioning-through-occupation window). Deck logs for this hull (October 1944-July 1946) should exist in NARA RG 24 but are not publicly digitized - open archival lead for any future work-disturbance or repair inquiry (including the aftermath of the 5 April 1945 collision).

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A tank landing ship mass-built in 1944 sits squarely inside the documented WWII-era Navy asbestos-use window. The LST-542 design is diesel-powered with no boilers or steam distribution system - the boiler/turbine steam-lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a 1944 amphibious hull of this type were instead: engine-room and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing on machinery and piping, deck coverings, accommodation-space insulation, and electrical insulation - all in the cramped, poorly ventilated interior volumes typical of the type.

Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-810. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Does not establish that asbestos is or was present aboard this specific vessel.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service era (1944-46).

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documenting that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this 1944 LST-542-class hull was mass-produced - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization in ship construction.

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-810-lst810-01 through -10
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-810 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated API returned HTTP 429 (shared fleet daily quota exhausted, ~7 h to reset at attempt time); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos on Navy ships generally without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs, builder work packages, and any scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
