DANFS text for this hull: 'LST-812 was laid down on 14 August 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 27 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs. John J. Allan; and commissioned on 19 October 1944. During World War II, LST-812 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima in February 1945 and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto from April through June 1945. Following the war, LST-812 performed occupation duty in the Far East until mid-December 1945. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 9 May 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 19 June that same year. On 25 May 1948, the ship was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Co., of Bethlehem, Pa., for scrapping. LST-812 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track DANFS but the decommission date conflicts with DANFS (12 July 1946 vs 9 May 1946; carried in gaps) and NavSource could not supply the strike date DANFS gives (19 June 1946). Contains no asbestos content.

Reputable secondary build-register, not an official record. Finding
Builder-yard documentation from NPS: Evansville was 'the world's largest inland producer of ocean-going ships' - the Navy built Evansville Shipyard on 40 acres on the city's west side; Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company began production of the yard's first LST within four months of the plant's February 1942 announcement; by February 1945 the yard had produced 167 LSTs, working around the clock at a rate of one ship every four days in 1944, plus 13 ammunition lighters and 17 oceangoing barges; the last launch was 12 December 1945; a fire destroyed Evansville Shipyard in January 1946. LST-812 (way 131, Oct 1944 delivery) sits inside this documented production surge. NPS also documents sister LST-325 (NRHP-listed 24 June 2009) preserved at Evansville as the USS LST Ship Memorial.

Evansville Shipyard/MVB&I construction trades (1942-45; NPS documents around-the-clock shift production but gives no workforce figure)
    Limitations
Yard-level documentation, not a hull record - establishes the construction population and pace at this hull's builder but contains no asbestos, material, or work-practice content. NPS popularizes the type as '300 feet long by 50 feet wide'; the documented spec is 328' oa - figure noted, not propagated. LST-325 is a different hull (Philadelphia-built); her museum status is an evidentiary lead only.

A diesel-powered LST-542-class ship built Aug-Oct 1944 inside the Navy's documented asbestos era: the GM 12-567A diesel plant means NO boilers - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-consistent asbestos-relevant applications for a diesel LST of this period concentrate in: diesel exhaust lagging and manifold/engine gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, valve packing, and winch/crane brake linings - in the confined, low-headroom hull volume typical of the type.

NAME COLLISION CORRECTION: any post-1958 reference to 'LST-812' in South Korean service is a DIFFERENT hull. NavSource documents that USS LST-849 (American Bridge Co., Ambridge PA) was struck and transferred to the Republic of Korea in January 1959, renamed ROKS Wi Pong (LST-812), later redesignated LST-676, and survives as a museum ship at Gunsan, South Korea. The USS LST-812 of this record was sold for scrapping 25 May 1948 - a decade earlier - and never carried a name. Korean-service, Vietnam-era (16 combat missions), or museum-at-Gunsan references to 'LST-812' do NOT describe this hull.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or verified litigation naming USS LST-812 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the daily quota exhausted with a ~10.2 h reset; logged as blocked in search_ledger, NOT as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing content (gorilaw.com landing-ships page, simmonsfirm.com ship list) asserting asbestos aboard LSTs generally without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. The class-level CourtListener sweep (lst-1-class profile) returned only an incidental reunion-notice mention of LST-579 (Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton, S.D.N.Y. 1:07-cv-04771) - not an exposure record for any hull.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (quota-blocked, not run). Deck logs (RG 24), MVB&I yard work packages, and any Bethlehem Steel scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
