- Documented for this hull: laid down 13 April 1943 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by the Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co.; launched 26 June 1943; sponsored by Mrs. W. Raymond Brendel; commissioned 14 August 1943. Asiatic-Pacific operations: Gilbert Islands (occupation of Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls, February 1944 - DANFS groups Kwajalein/Majuro under the Gilbert Islands header); Marianas (Saipan, June-July 1944); Tinian, July 1944; Iwo Jima, February-March 1945. 'Following the war, LST-84 was redesignated LSTH-84 on 15 September 1945. She performed occupation duty in the Far East until early March 1946. Upon her return to the United States, the ship was decommissioned on 2 March 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 31 October 1947. On 20 April 1948, she was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Co., of Seattle, Wash., and subsequently scrapped. LSTH-84 earned five battle stars for World War II service as LST-84.'

- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS gives no laid-down-to-commissioning detail beyond dates, no commanding officers, no damage events, and no LST(H) conversion specifics. The 'return to the United States' phrasing conflicts with the SCAJAP turnover and Far East occupation-service dates documented by NavSource (see gaps). Tarawa/November-December 1943 service appears under the Gilbert Islands header without the operation-dates precision NavSource's campaign table carries.

[4]DANFS, Cinchona (YN-7/AN-12) - records assistance to LST-84 after an enemy bomb started a fire aboard, off Saipan, June 1944 (live NHHC page verified 2026-10-03) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS Cinchona entry, third paragraph (Saipan arrival 16 June 1944 passage)
- Finding type

- Finding
- The DANFS entry for USS Cinchona names this hull directly: 'Cinchona arrived off newly invaded Saipan on 16 June 1944. She conducted patrols, assisted the tank landing ship LST-84 after an enemy bomb started a fire on board, then inspected the Japanese net line in Tanapag Harbor.' - documents that LST-84 took an enemy bomb hit and fire off Saipan in mid-June 1944 and was assisted by the net tender Cinchona.

- LST-84 ship's company during firefighting and any subsequent repair; Cinchona crew assisting
- Limitations
- Documents the bomb/fire event and the assistance, not the extent of damage or repairs. Cinchona's entry gives no date for the assist beyond following her 16 June 1944 Saipan arrival - the 17 June dating comes from the chronology (ev-04) and circulating narrative accounts. Conflicts with the official chronology's 'friendly fire' attribution for LST-84 damage in the same mid-June 1944 Marianas window; whether two hits or one misattributed event is unresolved (see gaps). No asbestos content; battle damage repair could have disturbed era insulation but no repair record was located.

- Finding

[6]DANFS, Clamp (ARS-33) - Gilbert Islands salvage work December 1943 (live NHHC page verified 2026-10-03) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- DANFS Clamp entry, second paragraph (Funafuti / Gilbert Islands salvage passage)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION: a circulating claim that Clamp (ARS-33) 'conducted salvage operations on LST-84' on 10 November 1943 (Wikipedia 'ship history highlights'; an archived geocities DANFS transcription renders the same text with hull number 'LST-84' and escort '(DD-633)') is a transcription error. The live NHHC DANFS entry for Clamp reads: she arrived Funafuti 8 November 1943, came under air attack five times on 10 November, and 'conducted salvage operations on LST-34, and assisted Hoel (DD-533) off Betio Point, 2 December.' The vessel Clamp salvaged in the Gilberts was LST-34, not LST-84, and the salvage is dated with the 2 December Betio Point work, not the 10 November air attacks; Clamp also salvaged LST-34 aground off Tinian in August 1944.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered tank landing ship built April-August 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel amphibian of this type and period were GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/brake linings. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers - the boiler/steam lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. The September 1945 LST(H) hospital redesignation implies interior conversion/rework scope of a type that in the era commonly involved insulating materials, but the conversion work performed on this hull is undocumented.

- Finding
- Litigation documentation for this hull's builder yard: the Benefits Review Board affirmed an ALJ order awarding Longshore Act death benefits (funeral expenses plus $367.955/week from 18 November 2017) to the widow of Bennie Burton, who 'worked for Employer for thirty-one years, from 1964 until 1995, as a pipefitter and supervisor' at Jeffboat's Jeffersonville yard 'during which time he was allegedly exposed to asbestos, welding fumes, and other toxic substances'; two medical experts 'concluded Decedent's reported asbestos exposure contributed to his death.' The award issued on the Section 20(a) presumption of compensability after the employer defaulted on discovery entirely; the BRB affirmed on substantial-evidence review, and the situs is expressly Jeffersonville, Indiana (7th Circuit jurisdiction footnote).
