- vessel_history
- Finding
- LST-856 was laid down 16 September 1944 at Seneca, Illinois, by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 1 December 1944; and commissioned 23 December 1944, Lieutenant Arthur E. Fisher in command. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater, she participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in June 1945. She subsequently performed occupation duty in the Far East and service in China until mid-February 1946, decommissioned 29 May 1946, was struck 3 July 1946, and was sold to Bethlehem Steel Co., Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for scrapping 5 May 1948. NHHC credits one World War II battle star.

- Chicago Bridge & Iron construction workforce (1944); ship's company (1944-1946)
- Limitations
- Ship-specific historical record only. The DANFS entry does not identify asbestos, insulation, product manufacturers, quantities, conditions, individual exposure, or causation. The live NHHC page was 404 at verification; this citation is explicitly an archived official capture, not a live page.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's ship-number logbook list contains two LST-856 entries, each spanning 23 December 1944 through 30 June 1945.

- Ship's company
- Limitations
- The list establishes catalogued logbook coverage, not the contents of the logs. It does not establish asbestos presence, work performed, exposure, or causation; the underlying RG 24 logs were not reviewed in this batch.

- NavSource 10/16/160856.htm, header timeline and Specifications block
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NavSource identifies LST-856 as a 542-class tank landing ship and reports two General Motors 12-567A 900-horsepower diesel engines, a Falk main reduction gear, two propellers, 1,700 shaft horsepower, and diesel-driven ship's-service generators. It reports 13 officers and 104 enlisted in the ship's company, plus troop accommodations for 16 officers and 147 enlisted.

- Population
- Ship's company and embarked troops
- Limitations
- NavSource is a live, hull-specific secondary compilation, not an official registry or material survey. These machinery and complement figures corroborate class context only and do not identify asbestos-containing material or establish exposure. No official BuShips machinery table specifically naming this hull was retrieved this batch.

- PDF text, historical-exposure background discussion stating Navy use of chrysotile and amosite insulation on naval vessels
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The NIOSH-hosted article states that the Navy used chrysotile and amosite asbestos insulation on naval vessels to insulate pipes, boilers, and machinery, and that shipboard insulation removal began in the mid-1970s. LST-856 was a World War II diesel LST, decommissioned in 1946 and sold for scrap in 1948; this is Navy-wide era context, not a material finding for the hull.

- Study period
- Navy historical context; article published 2009
- Population
- Naval-vessel and shipyard workforce context; not LST-856-specific
- Limitations
- Navy-wide and shipyard-study context only; the article does not name LST-856, the LST-542 design, Chicago Bridge & Iron, or a material aboard this hull. Its boiler reference does not apply to the reported diesel propulsion. It establishes neither installation, quantity, condition, exposure, causation, nor legal eligibility for this vessel.

[6]Batch-7399 research ledger and source review [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-856-lst856-01 through -07
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying public ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or adjudicated asbestos litigation naming USS LST-856 / LST-856 was located in the sources reviewed. CourtListener is excluded from this negative finding because its authenticated helper reported the fleet daily quota exhausted before either required exact-name or hull-number query could run.

- Study period
- 2026-10-03
- Limitations
- This is a documented search result, not proof that asbestos was absent. CourtListener litigation coverage is an open access gap, not a no-result: rerun exact-name and hull-number searches for opinions and dockets after the shared quota resets. The underlying NARA deck logs and any builder records remain unreviewed archival leads.
