- Finding
- Documented for this hull: 'LST-873 was laid down on 14 November 1944 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by the Jeffersonville Boat & Machinery Co.; launched on 3 January 1945; sponsored by Miss Florence A. Babb; and commissioned on 27 January 1945, Lt. Ned S. Holley in command. Following World War II, LST-873 performed occupation duty in the Far East until mid-February 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 8 August 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 25 September that same year. On 20 May 1948, the ship was sold to Kaiser Co., Inc., Vancouver, Wash., for scrapping.'

- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS entry is brief (typical for un-named LSTs) and carries no WWII operational narrative - theater assignment and itinerary come from the NavSource rows.

- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates agree verbatim with DANFS where both exist; unit-assignment, occupation-period, and spec detail is NavSource-only. Armament shown is the 'ultimate design' fit and conflicts with HyperWar's as-built fit (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- A crew member's dated itinerary documents this hull's movements 20 Jan-10 Nov 1945: reduced commission 20 Jan at Jeffersonville; departed for New Orleans (arrived 26 Jan) and full commission 27 Jan; shakedown St. Andrews Bay, Gulfport, Mobile; Canal Zone transit (Cristobal/Balboa 7 Mar); San Pedro (12 Mar); Pearl Harbor (12 Apr; training June); Eniwetok (30 Jun); Saipan (7 Jul); Okinawa (28 Jul-5 Aug, including a 2-4 Aug typhoon-evasion sortie); Saipan (11 Aug); then Leyte (9 Sep), Lingayen Gulf (15 Sep), Wakayama, Honshu, Japan (25 Sep), Manila (9 Oct), Lingayen (14 Oct), Wakayama (27 Oct), Nagoya, Honshu (1 Nov), Saipan (10 Nov) - where the contributor transferred to LST-835 for return transport.

- Ship's company underway (1945); embarked troops on lifts to Japan (occupation period)
- Limitations
- Crew-contributed recollection hosted on NavSource, not an official deck log - individual-entry precision is the contributor's own, but the itinerary is consistent with DANFS occupation-duty framing and NavSource's medal-period table (Wakayama/Nagoya calls fall inside the documented occupation windows). Log ends 10 Nov 1945 with the contributor's transfer; this hull's movements Nov 1945-Aug 1946 are undocumented beyond the decommission date.

- Finding
- Era/design inference for a diesel-powered LST-542-group hull built 1944-45: the BuShips design table establishes 2 x GM 12-567A diesels, ~1,700 shp, 2 shafts via Falk reduction gears - a diesel plant with NO boilers, narrowing the steam-lagging pathway. Era-standard asbestos applications for the type concentrated in diesel-exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets, valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation schedule, material list, or survey located for LST-873. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. ACCESS GAP: the shipscribe.com SDB-1945v2.pdf live URL returned 404 on 2026-10-03 and no Wayback capture exists (CDX search empty); the design-table content was retrieved live 2026-09-16 during the class-profile session and the machinery facts are independently corroborated by the NavSource spec block (live).

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944-45) and service era (1945-46) with margin to spare.

- Finding
- The documented scrapping buyer for this hull - Kaiser Co., Inc., Vancouver, WA (sale 20 May 1948) - is a Kaiser shipbuilding operation whose Vancouver/Richmond yard complex is a documented asbestos-product yard in the project shipyard dataset (documented products: insulation, fireproofing, hull insulation, boiler components, pipe coverings, turbine insulation, electrical wiring, deck materials, adhesives, brake systems). The scrapping end of this hull's life cycle therefore sits inside a documented asbestos-era yard population.

- Limitations
- The 20 May 1948 sale is ship-specific and verified, but the buyer name is the extent of the ship-level record - the breakup location, date, and any material-handling practice are undocumented. The yard's asbestos-product documentation is yard-level and does not establish any material aboard this hull or exposure for any individual shipbreaker.

- Locator

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-873 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the shared daily quota exhausted (~8.9 h to reset) and directed no-retry; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. The only 'asbestos aboard LST-873' material surfaced is law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. The one real Jeffboat-yard litigation hit (Jeffboat, Inc. v. Director, OWCP, 7th Cir. No. 24-2234, decided 2026-06-23) is a non-asbestos LHWCA lung-irritant case - other litigation, not qualifying.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944-45 diesel LST sits squarely inside the documented asbestos-use era, so era inference remains reasonable but unproven. The CourtListener litigation repository is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs, Jeffersonville yard work packages, and any scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
