- NavSource record for this hull: 542-class tank landing ship laid down 21 October 1944 at Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., Evansville, IN; launched 2 December 1944; commissioned USS LST-876, 27 December 1944, Lt. - Finding
- A National Archives-held U.S. Coast Guard photograph (26-G-4466) captioned in the NavSource archive as showing 'four LSTs, including USS LST-876, in the far left distance, and USS LST-929, center, alongside an unidentified LST, all at anchor off the beachhead at Iwo Jima, between 19 and 28 February 1945, waiting to unload their cargos onto the beach' - contemporaneous photographic documentation placing this hull at the Iwo Jima beachhead during the operation NavSource credits her with (15 Feb - 16 Mar 1945), against DANFS's Okinawa-only account.

- Limitations
- Archival lead only: the NARA-held photo is a contemporaneous USCG record, but the identification of this hull in the image rests on the NavSource caption/contributor, not on a NARA-catalog transcription fetched directly - catalog.archives.gov is JS-rendered and could not be independently fetched this session (verification partial). - DANFS narrative vs NavSource campaign table/awards display vs NavSource caption of NARA 26-G-4466
- Finding type

- Finding
- DOCUMENTED CONFLICT (unresolved): DANFS credits LST-876 with the Okinawa Gunto assault/occupation in May and June 1945 and ONE battle star; NavSource credits both the Iwo Jima and Okinawa Gunto operations and TWO battle stars, with the awards display showing the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two stars. A contemporaneous USCG photograph held at NARA (26-G-4466) is captioned as showing this hull off the Iwo Jima beachhead 19-28 February 1945 - supporting the Iwo Jima presence NavSource credits. The official battle-star resolution could not be verified against an award list this session.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-542-class tank landing ship built in late 1944 sits inside the documented asbestos-use era for naval construction; era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard this ship type were engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. The diesel plant carries no boilers - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; exposure relevance concentrates in machinery-room insulation, exhaust lagging, gaskets/packing, and interior finish materials, plus construction-yard trades exposure.

[7]National Park Service, 'Places of WWII History in Evansville, IN' - Evansville Shipyard / Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron wartime production record [nps]
- Locator
- NPS 'Places of WWII History in Evansville, IN' article, Evansville Shipyard section
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NPS documents this hull's builder: during WWII Evansville became home to 'the world's largest inland producer of ocean-going ships' - the Navy-built Evansville Shipyard on 40 acres on the city's west side, operated by the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company, which began LST production within about four months of the yard's February 1942 announcement. The yard produced 167 LSTs (per historical-marker sourcing consistent with the NPS account) - more than any other inland yard - and was destroyed by fire in January 1946. Museum ship USS LST-325 (built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, not at this yard) is now homeported at Evansville, commemorating the city's LST-production history.

[8]Woolsey v. Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., 119 Ind. App. 391 (Ind. App. Oct. 17, 1949) - occupational-disease workers' compensation appeal (exa.ai aggregator transcription; reporter volume cited as 87 N.E.2d 54 there vs 88 N.E.2d 54 on hallapproved.com) [court_record]
- Locator
- exa.ai Woolsey opinion text (decedent employment dates, Industrial Board finding, affirmance)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Documented occupational-disease litigation at this hull's builder during her construction window: Elbert Woolsey was employed by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. 'as a pipe fitter in the compartment of ships from June 21, 1944 to November 11, 1944' - overlapping this hull's construction (laid down 21 October 1944) - and died 29 October 1945; his survivors (appellants) alleged under the Indiana Workmen's Occupational Diseases Act that he 'was poisoned from inhaling fumes and gases from galvanized metal being welded.' The Industrial Board found no occupational disease (two members dissenting) and the Appellate Court affirmed. NOT an asbestos case: the alleged agent was metal fume from welding galvanized metal.

- Limitations
- Yard-level litigation context, not a hull record and not an asbestos case - documents that occupational-disease claims at this builder were litigated contemporaneously with this hull's construction, on a metal-fume theory. Reporter citation conflict between aggregators (87 vs 88 N.E.2d 54; both agree 119 Ind. App. 391, decided 1949-10-17); CourtListener could not be queried this session to confirm or host the opinion; exa.ai is a non-authoritative aggregation - verify reporter cite before any citation-grade use.

- Finding type

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service era (1944-46), though her 1947-48 scrapping predates the management-program period the report surveyed (1975 policy, 1979 modification).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-876 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - API returned HTTP 429 (daily quota exhausted, ~8.8 h to reset); logged as blocked, not a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm page naming this hull; the only 'asbestos' content located is law-firm jobsite listicles (mesotheliomaweb.org, freeasbestostesting.com, respectforyou.com) naming the BUILDER - Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron / Evansville Shipyard - as an asbestos jobsite without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs, MVB&I work packages/contract records, and any 1947 scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
