Moorehead; commissioned 3 January 1945, Lt. Laurence Lattomus, USNR, in command. Following the war, LST-878 performed occupation duty in the Far East until late November 1945; decommissioned 3 May 1946; struck from the Navy list 19 July 1946; sold to Bosey, Philippines, 5 November 1947.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; contains no asbestos or material content. DANFS records no combat operations or battle stars for this hull - commissioned January 1945, her documented service is post-surrender occupation duty. The official BuShips roster lists LST878: built by Missouri Valley B. & I. Co., Evansville, Ind.; keel laid 30 Oct 44; launched 9 Dec 44; first commissioned 3 Jan 45 - matching DANFS on all three milestones. The LST542-931 design-group table (which covers this hull) gives: 328 ft overall / 316 ft waterline, 50 ft beam, 2,366 t beaching displacement / 4,080 t full load, 11.6 kt trial speed.

Contributed photography places LST-878 and LST-901 moored in San Francisco Bay in 1945 preparing to depart for Far East duty.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - dates track DANFS where they overlap (all consistent here) but unit assignments and the CO roster are not independently verified against primary sources. Specification block is standard class data, not a hull-specific measurement record. Contains no asbestos content.

Missouri Valley yard table, row 152 (LST-878); page narrative on yard history and 1946 fire
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The yard production table lists this hull as yard hull no. 152: keel laid 10/30/44, launched 12/10/44, delivered 1/3/45 - 41 days on the ways, 24 days in the water, 65 days total. The source describes the Evansville plant as a purpose-built wartime yard on the Ohio River, built for the war effort, destroyed by fire in 1946, and closed after the war (the ways remain visible at low water); it credits the yard with 171 LSTs plus LCTs, lighters, and seaplane derricks (the Leavenworth KS plant).

    Limitations
Secondary compilation (Naval Marine Archive research table), not a primary yard record - verification_status partial. Two conflicts against primary sources: launch 12/10/44 vs DANFS/BuShips 9 Dec 44, and disposition 'Scrapped 1947' vs DANFS/NavSource 'sold to Bosey, Philippines, 5 Nov 1947, fate unknown' - primary sources carried for both (see gaps). The yard LST count itself conflicts with the University of Southern Indiana figure (171 vs 167 - see gaps). No asbestos content.

    Finding
A tank landing ship built Oct 1944-Jan 1945 sits squarely inside the Navy's wartime asbestos-insulation era. The type is diesel-powered (two GM 12-567A diesels, electric generation by three 100 kW diesel sets) with NO steam plant - the boiler/main-steam lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-consistent asbestos applications for a 1944-45 LST of this design are: diesel-exhaust and engine-room lagging, machinery thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. Crew lived and worked within a small welded hull built at a wartime emergency yard.

GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944-45) and service era (1945-46).

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-878 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper returned daily-quota exhaustion (~8.7 h to reset); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. A secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (gorilaw.com, mesotheliomatreatmentcenters.org and similar listicles) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - wartime LST construction is era-consistent with asbestos use, and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). The hull's post-1947 commercial fate is unknown, so no post-service hazmat track exists. Deck logs and Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron work records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
