- Finding
- Documented for this hull: 'LST-882 was laid down on 14 November 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 23 December 1944; sponsored by Mrs. John R. Brown; and commissioned on 18 January 1945. Following World War II, LST-882 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early March 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 5 July 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 28 August that same year. On 4 November 1947, the ship was sold to the Moore Drydock Co., Oakland, Calif., for scrapping.'

- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Entry records no WWII combat operations and carries no 'earned battle stars' line (unlike sister-hull entries such as LST-682/-728/-879 which do) - consistent with a January 1945 commissioning arriving in theater after the major assault phases. Live NHHC page dead (404 under both current URL patterns, confirmed against control hull LST-879); archived capture is the citable form.

- Finding
- This hull is a diesel-powered LST-542-class ship: two GM 12-567A diesels, no boilers - so the steam-plant boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply. Era asbestos-relevant applications for the type: diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. BuShips SD-1945 v2 confirms the LST-542-group machinery fit (GM 12-567A pair, ~1,700 shp) matches this hull's documented spec block.

[5]Fleischer, W.E., Drinker, P. et al., 'A Health Survey of Pipe Covering Operations in Constructing Naval Vessels,' J. Ind. Hyg. - Finding
- This hull was sold for scrapping to a documented asbestos-yard: the Atlas shipyards.json record for Moore Dry Dock Company, Oakland (yard_id moore-dry-dock-oakland, evidence_tier 2) documents amosite pipe covering (block and felt), asbestos boiler-block insulation, asbestos gaskets (Garlock/John Crane), Johns-Manville asbestos millboard, and asbestos deck covering at the yard, anchored by the Fleischer-Drinker 1946 survey and the Simons Trust 'H' designation. DANFS documents the sale of this hull to that yard on 4 November 1947 for scrapping - breaking work there would have disturbed whatever era insulation and gasket material the ship carried.

- Population
- Moore Drydock shipbreakers and yard trades (1947-48 breakup window)
- Limitations
- Yard-level documentation, not a hull record: establishes the asbestos-documented character of the facility that broke this ship, not the material content of the hull broken. Fleischer-Drinker surveyed Navy contract yards as a group and its wartime-construction framing is construction/repair-era, not shipbreaking-specific; a retraction call for the paper was reported (C&EN, July 2026), with the Simons Trust designation providing independent corroboration of the yard rating. No individual exposure is established.

- Locator

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- A prior authenticated CourtListener sweep of 'USS LST' asbestos dockets (run for the class profile, 2026-09-16) located no asbestos docket naming any specific LST hull: the only document-level hit was a scanned Navy reunion-notice compilation in Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton (S.D.N.Y. 1:07-cv-04771, ECF 17-20) where 'USS LST 579' appears inside a reunion listing - an incidental mention, not an exposure record. No result for LST-882 or any hull-numbered LST was found in that sweep.

- Limitations
- Class-level sweep, not a hull-specific search: hull-number sweeps (e.g. 'LST-882') were not exhaustively run per the class profile's own limitation, and this session's ship-specific CourtListener run was blocked by daily quota - the litigation status of this specific hull remains an open gap, not a verified negative.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or verified litigation naming USS LST-882 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull's short career (commissioned January 1945, struck August 1946, sold for scrapping November 1947) entirely predates the modern asbestos-survey and hazmat-disclosure era. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - API reported the shared daily quota exhausted (~8.6 h to reset); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no law-firm marketing page naming this hull was found.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent insulation and gasket materials are a reasonable inference for a 1944-built naval vessel, not a ship-proven fact. The litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (quota-throttled, not run). Deck logs (NARA RG 24) and Moore Drydock breakup-yard work records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

[9]NARA RG 24 deck logs (WWII-era Navy deck-log series) for LST-882, Jan 1945-Jul 1946 commissioning window; catalog search interface is JS-rendered and the records API requires a key - no digitized entry located for this hull [other_primary]

- Finding
- Archival leads for this hull: NARA RG 24 deck logs covering her 18-month commissioned career (January 1945-July 1946) are expected in the WWII-era deck-log series but are not located in digitized form; the NARA catalog is JS-rendered and not programmatically searchable this session. NavSource's Lingayen Gulf photo (LST-882 beached alongside LST-1022, Luzon, Philippine Islands, date unknown) is the only located visual record. Moore Drydock 1947-48 breakup-contract or yard work records, if they survive, would be the only document trail for the shipbreaking itself.
